Description
This is for my mom. Happy Mother's Day, mom! (belated - oops)

For those of you who are interested, instrumentation: piano, flute, english horn, horn in F, solo viola and solo cello.

This was a very challenging piece for me for some reason. Very many thanks to magnatone, who really dug deep with me on this one and offered lots of very valuable feedback, advice and support. And kissmekate, who just smiled supportively each time I threw a temper tantrum and tossed this song in the trash. and then continued to smile supportively when i went, grumbling and growling, to drag the song OUT of the trash and re-write it yet again.

perfect ending for me
Thank you so much. This is beautiful. It really touched me tonight, or I should say at 1:10 a.m. in Texas! Our youngest daughter just graduated last week and we had her party tonight and the last guest just left. Very long and busy day and we are beat! I wanted to check my email before I went to bed. Lucky me for those notifications, I see a gift from Shay! I could not wait. A perfect ending for my crazy day. I will sleep peaceful. Trust me, your mom will be blessed as well. Beautiful! Night night.... :)

So sweet
It's late - I've been working on a new piece for hours
and it's to the sound of this sweet song
that I'm getting ready to rest.
And so it makes for a
lovely lullaby
for me too.

Thanks
Shay !

Beautiful
What a lovely piece of music. You certainly have a talent for composing beautiful pieces. Enjoyed this very much and relaxed while eating my breakfast. Well done.

P.s. We should collab one day just to see what comes out at the end.

Alleluia!!!!!!!!!!
What a surprise - you POSTED IT!! A gorgeous sound for me to wake up to in lovely Boardman, OR, getting ready to start a day of motorcycling that will apparently be very windy :( This is the calm before the storm! I know you were very challenged by this, but your perseverance really paid off. This song went through more completely different iterations than anything I've known you to write in the last year - your story about the trash was really true! ("how's the song coming?" "oh, i trashed it" "how is it now?" "oh, i dug it out of the trash, tore it apart, rewrote it completely, then trashed it again") Well, whatever your circuitous process to completion here, it turned out exquisitely shay - congratulations!

Counter Points
Such a gentle number, Shay. Very pleasant on the ears. There are a number of melodies going on here, some of which get a little lost behind the piano arpeggiation. I'd encourage you to bring them out a little more. It is lovely the way you let the flute spin out from behind the ensemble especially in the last 10-15 seconds of the number. The f-horn blends so well with strings. It's such a versatile instrument and you use it well...I liked the opening, too, before the piano sneaks in to take over the movement of the piece. The conversation there tentative and delicate, no one wanting to step on anyone else's toes. When the piano takes over, I get the feeling of wonderful control of your various elements. Thanks for posting such a quiet and beautiful song.
Peace.

Top hole
the gently slightly ripply effect reminds me of a gentle summers days, gentle breeze in the leaves, just puttering along on a gently idling motor on Lake Windermere and then getting home for a BBQ as me Mam says 'What's up with you ?You don't write you don't phone ,you treat this house like a hotel! !'

This is so touching, Shay
Thank you for persevering to get this finished. It is delicate, emotional and peaceful. All the instruments sound perfectly together, which is so hard to do. You mastered it, and it sounds beautiful.

This is lovely
The album art is very fitting, by the way. You have really nicely done instrumentation. Very well balanced, all of my favorite instrument, too. I love the flowing nature of this. Isn't it funny how some of the most calming and serene sounding music sometimes comes out of the most frustrating song-writing process? I'm glad you took it out of the trash and posted it. It really is a wonderful piece of music!

Kassia
I actually listened to this early this morning at 1:30 while I was shutting down. Shay, this is lovely. I am reading other words here in the comments that I agree with whole-heartedly. Delicate, perseverance, dream, sweet, peaceful, soothing, gentle. Somehow I have the belief that the people that are closest to you describe you with these same words. Interesting how you get the impression by their music who people really are.
A song truly to be proud of Shay.

A beautiful tribute
Simple to the point orchestration - each sound is there for a reason. This has a lovely embrace - soft, warm, and relaxing. The melodic lines that enter from time to time are each little gems - particularly the flute that soars near the end.

Thanks for sharing this acoustic peace Shay.

Be well,
Doug

I'm sorry
to be late for the party... I did bring a present... where should I put it? Wait.. the party is over!? Rats... missed another one!

Well for the mom of Kassia one should celebrate big and this does exactly that! Shay, it's beautiful and if I were your mom (don't go there...) I'd be proud and happy and I sure she is!

I've always loved piano work and what really comes through in this is your expression. Every key is struck with feeling that comes through. This is something I have a very tough time with in my piano work (if it can be called that!) I have a hard time making it emotive through the work itself. I usually have to rely on melody or other instrumentation. Your piano could stand alone!

Nicely nicely done!

Thanks kassia...

This is lovely. It caused me to think of my mom who died many years ago. Sad but sweet this song is therefore to me. And that makes it especially poignant... so yes, a belated Happy Mother's Day, mom...

Uplifting
This is very beautiful and uplifting. And peaceful. I like your orchestration, particularly your horn lines. It could be movie music, accompanying a very beautiful scene... it has a monumental feel, and yet with simplicity at the same time. I really like it, and am impressed!

Hi Shay......
I've listened to this piece many, many times since you posted it and even run it through my DAW, and played around with how things sound, and I enjoy listening to the music just as much as the original. To me the couple of mixes that I've saved are simply variations on your original arrangement. Playing all three in sequence doesn't become boring or repetative at all. It still sounds fresh and vibrant in every way.

The clever arrangement of the instruments and their phrased accompaniment compliments your piano playing in a way that says these varying instruments belong together in just this way, for just this piece. No more. No less.

It is a very special piece, and so it should be for your mother. The title is an exclamation of Joy, and so is the music.

Take care.

Paul

Lovely,
very moving, so nice Shay!!
Have you ever gave your compositions to an ensemble to play?
Would be interesting to hear it played by "natural" instruments.
And YOU can conduct it then... :o)

Gracious and heartwarming tune, thanks for that!
