Description
A few weeks ago I was reading the forum post that Tobin had put up regarding Facebook. I thought what the hell, I have never done any of the social networking stuff before and went to check it out. In the process of creating an account, of course they were asking what schools you went to. So, I entered my high-school and up came a list of possible friends. This was the beginning of the song. I saw many faces that I remembered from all those years ago, and sadly some looked as lost today as they were then. There were photos of them and their families at various places and it kinda looked, all though they were smiling, they would rather be somewhere else. I hope their dreams came true. Mine did.

This is very shallow and a very quick recording. I have once again just given up. Try as I might, recording and vocals are beyond me...... I write songs but do not have the talent to perform them as they should be done. Thank you for listening and your understanding.

Lyrics
Russ Wilson © 2009
So you passed on your dreams
And you did all the things that society said you should.
Happy it seems
In a relative way.

But I look in your eyes
Deep and shallow behind the smile that you always wear
The white picket fence wasn't part of your dreams.

Chorus:

When you look back in time
Tell me what do you see?
Is it filled with regret
Or is full and complete?
Because it's never too late
For your soul to be free.
Life at times is hard enough
Make your way through
Hold on to your dreams.

Now the shadows are full
And your days go quickly and your nights aren't long enough.
The days of your youth are farther away.

The memories you hold
are the smiles that you wear at night when you fall asleep.
The passion inside still begs to be free.

Chorus

So the choices you've made
Brought you down life's long and narrow street.
Second guessing remains
But the chapter's complete.

Sometimes we don't know
No matter how hard or how much we stop and think
Could it be the fence was your dream?

Great lyrics Russ
Love the chord progression and the sound of that Take is outstanding. You've also got some very tasty licks thrown in there helping the song along.

Great bit of song writing my friend, you can be very proud of this one. Thanks for sharing it with us Russ.

Russ, this is just terrific - i especially love the guitar work in here. i don't know why you think song writing is your only talent (although, you certainly have THAT talent in spades as well!) Your stuff always sounds so GOOD to me! You are a kind man. I am just not comfortable in front of a mic, never have been. I have played guitar all my life, cover bands, some origional music but never a singer. This is tough and I just get upset. I will just keep at it, practice makes, well (in my case) better.
Thanks for stoping by and your words of confidence. Means alot man.

Russ...
Keep at it. You'll eventually get comfortable with the sound of your own vox bro.

When I first began posting a few years ago, folks had to coax me out from behind all the instruments I buried it in. My vox just made me cringe! Damn...It STILL does now and then, but I'm mostly over the revulsion. Ha ha...It took awhile though. So I really DO understand.

I think you have a unique, signature sound that you should exploit proudly. Your vox sounds natural and disarming to my ears, and that's a very GOOD thing. And I'll just bet there are plenty of other folks here who would agree with that assessment.

Be well friend!

I love the way this sounds and the story you tell. Polish does not make a song a good song - and a good song doesn't need it. This is a great song and I love hearing your version just as it is. Excellent progression and drive - cool vocals - right-on guitar playing. Well done.

Hmm....
I dunno, the vocals sound pretty darned good to me! There are a few places where the words of the lyrics run a little fast, but overall this is very well put together musically and lyrically, awesome music and guitar playing. I could hear you offer this up for some cool backing vox, maybe a sax solo (Damien/Andy?)... but this is definitely QUALITY material!

I remember going to the 10 & 20-year high school reunion, and being similarly amazed at how little anyone changed... which made me immediately look in the mirror and decide to get comfortable with myself, since it's going to be a long ride with this "self" character :-)

ttfn,
Drakonis

Heya
Man, there's nothing wrong with this recording. Old school, I'd say, but bloody fine. You won't get any better on old Jimi or Bob recordings. The drums sound really cool, they're more of a texture than a percussive drive. Neat. And the singing and playing all around are very nice, strong and at ease. You know what you're doing man, don't get yourself down over the fact that you lack that studio shine. That's what we have studios for!

cool start
Great sounding guitars are starting this one off. The reflective lyrics are very good IMHO. "Could it be the fence was your dream?", This is very good!
The laid back music supports the message, and gives a kind of a late 60's feel to it. Would be a hit at Woodstock;) The soloing on the acoustic holds the song together with the nice embroideries all along the timeline.

Dear Russ,
From an old broad who has some supporters here: You are way too hard on yourself!
Superb song writing, great guitar playing and honest and poignant singing. It all sounds as if it were meant to come together. Many of us can relate. Obviously, this song resonates so much that several want to sing it. I would enjoy that, myself. I had a cheap ass pin hole mic on a web cam. I have a new mic now that records much more cleanly. But, I've had a cold with a cough for the last couple weeks and have been making my friends wait. It was under $80. I recommend getting one. But, never degrade your voice. I thought it was perfect. Thanks.

You write
and play great songs and with quite intricate timing on the words, which seems to be your own thing. Love your guitar playing, which sounds very natural....... excellent lyrics too Russ and a very pleasant song, regards M

hey it's cool man!
I just wanna say I really dig your vocals. They remind me of being on the streets hearin' a little blues duo wailin and groovin away! great feel overall and i love the guitar work too! I would play this in my car stereo for sure. I have a groovy bass line in my head for this....

i love this. the opening chord sequence....your very unique vocal style. how is your voice so 'different'. this is a beauty. i can see you haven't been here for 2 years...so it's possibly likely you've slipped off the planet. shame. come back.

How subjective words like 'shallow' can be at times...
re:' ...I write songs but do not have the talent to perform them as they should be done." I empathize with what you're saying, but your tune - vocals, cheap ass microphone and all, has a comfy, unique style that presents it's story and works effectively for this listener.
