Broken (Ft. spitlogic & Kingbee)

Description
Kingbee offered to send me a bass track for the original track. I got the song mastered with his excellent bass track. I had my good friend listen to the track and he suggested I try breaking up the verse parts to give more variation.

So..... This version is a product of that suggestion. If you've heard the original unmastered track, hopefully this will sound much improved.

Again, thanks to Kingbee for offering up his bass skills and to spitlogic for allowing me to mess around with his A Cappella track.

After this I'll probably be banned from collaborating, lol!

Mike - this is
an amazing mix. Such a wonderful sound. The bass is driving. The guitars and keyboards are superb and the drums to die for. I am loving hearing Spitlogic's vocals going in so many directions. Loved your previous mix but this is just superior.
Great, great mix.
Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

Evolution-
After getting Kingbee's bass track and getting it sounding good, I took the track to my friend's house to have him listen. He's very good at picking things apart (in a good way) and making suggestions. He went so far as to suggest I get some women to sing backing VOX during the chorus. Obviously I didn't go there, lol!

Thanks for the generous compliment on the sound. Without Spitlogic and Kingbee with wouldn't have happened.

many thanks
Glad you liked the bass line enough to go with your brilliant track.
The keyboards add a cool different angle to the original.
A pleasure working with you.
Hope everyone likes it

Likewise
Thanks for doing that killer bass track! I'm not sure if it's the tone on your bass or what, but it was the easiest time I've had of fitting a bass track into a song. It sounds fantastic!

I'm glad you like the finished product. These collab's are a blast and it's great having you join in on this!

Bigger
and even more developed.

Mike, I really dig the additions and changes you made on this one.
I didn't even think that improvement could be made from the earlier version. dang, fantastic job!

Remember
a while back & me talking about my friend Lenny? Blame him, lol! He merely suggested I break up the verse. It was a tough thing to do because I was worried about messing with spitlogic's track too much. The bass track Kingbee sent was absolutely perfect, which made it very easy for me to mix.

I knew I could do a better mix over the original once I got this set up in Logic Pro. I'm glad the changes sound OK too. Thanks Vic!

Thanks!
The original is still up, but I didn't spend any time mastering because it was more of a song draft to see who might be interested in adding to it.

I still have a long road ahead in learning to play guitar, but this was a lot of fun for me to do. Thanks for the listen/comment!

As long as it doesn't sound broken, lol!
With the fine tracks from both spitlogic and Kingbee, I was kind of worried about making any changes to the original structure. Also, I wanted to get this finished because I won't see my guitar or keyboard for the next month due to work :(

Thanks for listening and commenting Karen :)

Loved what you did originally
and this has a really good bassline. Really good collab, and its really good how you have merged Mitchell's lyrics with this full on rock track, it goes so well. Well done.

Banned From Collaborating!
That's a good one!

Dude, we need more heavy stuff like this. It's even better than the first version. The bass really adds some big bottom to it.

And in case you're wondering - yes I dig those synths.

Another good clab guys.

Well.....
I get a bit paranoid when I mess with other folks tracks. Glad you like the synth parts. Playing a riff I liked was easy, choosing what it would sound like wasn't. That's a Vanguard AU synth. with far too many options, lol!

Thank for checking out the track!

Rapcore : )
Sweet work friend! Haven't heard any rapcore on here. It's nice to see you bring it back because the genre is slowing fading away. The lyrics flow well with the guitar rifting which is pretty hard to do. It'll be sweet to see your other works. Keep it up! :D

Thanks!
When I posted the tune I looked for that genre but didn't see it in the list, so I went with heavy metal. Spitlogic's rhythm and flow on his vocal track was perfect and made it so easy for me to put this together. Thanks again for the comment!

loved the additions. Absolutely the ballz when it comes to that key board sound you slide in there. Spits vox are framed perfectly here.

Vanguard
The synth is from my Vanguard AU, of which I have a "billion" presets, lol! For once, I actually had a sound in mind and didn't have to waste a bunch of time listening to all the preset tones.

Thanks for coming back to hear the updated version- Glad to hear you like our collab!

wow mike!
this is FABULOUS! what a killer track. i loved spit's original words and the way you've sliced and diced them here is perfect. I also love the different effects you used on them. then - wow - the killer guitar! and drums! and bass! this is awesome - just a really powerful anthem. i love it.

Since posting this, I've been working with my friend (as time allows) to improve the mix. I kind of wish I had delayed posting this version because I've been able to vastly improve this. (improved FX, balance/EQ'ing and overall volume level)

I really appreciate your kind and supportive comment, Shay. Glad you liked our collab!

Excellent wall of sound
Super-thick sound reminiscent of Living Colour and some other bands from the early 90s. The two primary guitars left and right are well-recorded and well-presented. I like Kingbee's contribution as well, even if it is mixed down a touch for my taste. That may have been a necessary evil as the tracks added up.

Love the multi-plateau intro (with the first few lines having a lo-fi sound and delay, followed by the 808-style drums, followed by the glitchy interlude and then full-on rock). It's a good way of get into the groove.

I presume the drums are MIDI (only because an individual drumming credit is not in your description). They really sound great, nice variation of fills and dynamics.

There are definitely a couple of spots where I wish spitlogic's lyrics fit the beat a little bit better. I don't know how much could have been done with a little time stretching in Logic, but I saw that you only used Logic for mastering anyway.

Love those multi-collabs, this one came out well!
mike_d said 3005 days ago (July 31st, 2009)
Wow- Thanks!
I really appreciate your detailed comment. I completely agree with you on the mix- which is why I'm trying to improve it as time allows. Now that I've got LP9 I'll have to see what I can do about the vocal timing as well. (I did import the entire project into Logic for the remixing I'm doing)

The drums (excluding the intro) are all Drums on Demand. I added accent kicks, ect. to spice them up a bit.

Again- thanks for the detailed comment! (It's something I wish I could easily do) I really appreciate the time you took to listen and comment!
