Shakin' Off The Rust Blues

Description
Hey all!
I hope everyone is doing good. Sorry that I haven't been around, but it's work season and I've been really busy with jobs, plus TRYING to find more gigs in this economy is next to impossible, but my persistence is paying off and I still have them coming in. So really, I been more focused on making money than anything else....So to the point, I really haven't had the time for music or playing the guitar in general for the last couple months or so, but I did however have this day off so I figured I would try to get something accomplished in the music department. So hence the title... Anyway, it's just my open collab with me getting some practice time in.

Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks

Chris

Thanks Shelia
I'm truly considering giving "the blues" my full attention and concentrating on that genre exclusively. Over the past year, I've been attracted to that genre more and more, so I'm REALLY leaning to make this decision final.

Thanks again Shelia.

Shakin' Off The Rust Blues
Yeah ...thats the real deal .... you know it has the Zep depth on the bass
and the classics on the brass ...you da man ....thnx alot for sharin !!!!
PickQuickRecords said 168 days ago (June 10th, 2009)
Thanks Feter
I noticed that too about the bass. All I did was record it completely dry and added the "Bass Boost" in GB with a little reverb. I have to say that simplicity of your signal is the key to a great track.

Thanks again for the listen and comment.

I appreciate it.

thats some rust!
Now that some guitar playing... peoples should be flocking to this - esp in this economy... makes ya feel so good. There should be some oxidation layin on the floor over there. Good one. Did I detect a horn section or it that good keyboard mixin' ?

Thanks Andy.
What's funny is that I REALLY had some rust on my strings! LOL!
I actually had to clean them up before I started.

Yep, there is a horn section, but I used loops so I could offer the rhythm section as an "Open Collab".

Thanks again for the listen and comments.

Nothing sounds rusty to me, man.

Nice production here. Thanks for posting this.

Really, I haven't picked up the guitar in quite a while, but I've been listening to SRV tunes and the Kenny Wayne Shepherd cd, "10 Day's Out" like mad. Without that constant listening, I believe I wouldn't of been able to pull it off like I did. I'm truly fascinated at how a person's listening habits really influence the approach to there music. I now understand what an impact JUST listening has upon a musicians approach to playing there instruments.

Thanks again Andy.

Thanks Guy.
Just been listening to a LOT of his material lately at work.

I grew up listening to him in the 80's. I was always in awe of his tone. It would blow my mind as a kid to hear a guitar that wasn't distorted sound so big. Everybody in that time had over saturated their guitars with dist. and effects (including myself, lol), so to hear this guy have some of the most wicked sounding screams with no effects was jaw dropping. He made a huge impact on me.

Like the man said, "We can only pass on our own interpretation of it."

Thanks again for stoppin' in Guy, I appreciate it.

Glad you liked it. I guess why I keep sounding like SRV in places is probably because that's what I identified as "blues" when I was growing up in the 80's. With SRV all over the radio back then, that was my only exposure to the blues I had during that time. I guess it's something I gotta live with. which I guess isn't a bad thing either! lol

Thanks again for the kind words.

For me, I'm truly pressed to find any "off" time, but I figured no matter what my practice state is at the time, that I'll at least try to record a tune with the time I find, no matter if I feel ready or not. I'm bad when it comes to "excuses" for not playing, so I figured that the only way to over come and change is to jump in head first. This is only for my days off. When I work, I'm BEAT afterwards. I don't feel like moving! lol! So when my season is over, I can get back to playing full time.

Thanks again for the listen. I'm slowly trying to get back into "participation" mode, so I'll be by your profile and everyone else's soon.

The rust is dust
Like any great performance it made me want to control it, edit it down to 4 minutes, suck in some of the reverb, get the organist to play a solo and wake up Stevie Ray to scorch a vocal track. Wicked dude! I must go listen to more of yer blues.

I hear ya, but I'm kinda a purist when it comes to that. When I was recording to tape, I was taught that you needed a "perfect" performance, so I kinda like leaving the little imperfections and performance the way they are. If it dosen't work, I'll re-do it. I really try NOT to edit to much if I don't have to. I don't like the "pop" ya end up getting sometimes when you edit. Maybe it's just cause I'm bad at it. hahaha!

Wish I HAD more for you to listen too! LOL!
I uploaded another a couple of days ago, some "scratch" tracks.
Thats about the extent of it at the moment, but I have plans for more.

Thanks again for the comment and listen. I appreciate it and..

as always, great post. the blues and the players that make the blues great stick to one glorious tenant: feel the music. make each note speak, preach, cry, scream, weep, laugh, exalt, and fill the song to the brim. your slower stuff makes this tune. it is a perfect tone, molded with some of your finest slow playing to date on this site. your faster stuff feels a bit more rushed, but no less a pleasure to listen to . great post.
just remember the more notes ring out, the more the guitar tells us your story. great post, brother, look forward to many more like it....

This
reminds me more of Buddy Guy than Stevie Ray.Great playing! If I have any worthwhile advice- check out some older players like Freddie King (Just Pickin' album)Otis Rush,B.B and Albert King, there are lots more. Also Kenny Burrell (Midnight Blue album)even maybe some Charlie Christian. There are SO many guys basing their whole style of off Stevie Ray... You are one hell of a player!

Thanks Mark.
I appreciate your listen and the list of artists to check out. I've been REALLY happy with playing the blues for some reason lately, but my exposure to artists has been limited. The guy's I'm currently listening to are Bryon Lee, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (I just love his "Born in Louisiana"), Hubert Smith and Henry Gray with the Howlin' Wolf Band, and stuff by Pinetop Perkins, amongst others. I'm slowly tryin' to take it all in. I have a lot of catching up to do! lol!

Again, thanks Mark and right back at ya! YOU no doubt are one of the greatest pickers here at MJ's.

Take care.

Axe to Grind?
...You've got one for sure. Always a good thing to hear you grind your axe. No complaints. The energy's good here... you're giving us the best impression of reaching to get those strings to talk, not "phoning it in." If I were to be critical (in case you want the challenge), this is great but I might suggest a fatter tone with some OD or amp sim on the lead to give it a dirtier live-gig feel. But if you do or don't like that move, the energy and licks are right on... no big deal. You don't NEED to stick to blues, but if you do, you won't go wrong, either. Great stuff on display here.

Glad you liked it. I agree the solo could be thicker for sure. Thats about the fattest I can get it to sound going direct into my Mbox from my Boss GT-8. Seems when I add gain, OD or some dist. to it, it thins the tone out. I'm sure if I spent more time in the GT-8 manual, I could find a way to get it thicker.

I also tried some post production, but the results I didn't like. It either took away from the "crispness" of the take or muddies it up. Actually, I've been considering dropping my direct approach and try miking an amp for once! LOL.

Thanks again for the listen and comments,

I appreciate it.

stunningly Stevie Rayish and a little Flood of Texas...very good. I note ibstrat's comment and a list of guys, have you had a listen to Rory Gallagher? I think Stevie Ray had him as one of his influences but quite where it showed up in his playing I am not sure. Still, bloody good this is ....
