Jonk's Express 2

Description
Since Jonk was nice enough to post this as an open Collab, I thought I'd see what it was like to play around in his sandbox for a while and give it a go. The original song file, called Lakota/88bpm in at

http://www.macjams.com/song/53464

I took it and had a little fun with it.

I hope you enjoy this little experiment of mine. Everything I added is loops, so be assured that no musicians were harmed during the making of this piece of music.

Ed

Such exotic sounds, and the guitars sound real to me. You had fun, and the description cracked me up! I;m sure JONK was happy to hear this.

Thank you Roxy
Well my only hope is that he's not too disappointed with what I did to his music. It was a cool track to begin with so it wasn't hard to take it for a ride. Loved every minute of it.

Glad you liked where I went Roxy, and thanks again for the great comments on it.

Be well and be cool,

JONK led the way
I just follow him and my Muse. Where ever she leads me, that's where I go. I've learned not to doubt her musical vision, she always knows best.

Thanks for dropping in to listen Bob, and for the very kind words. I'm always glad to see your Smiling avatar on one of my songs.

Be well and be cool my friend,

Thanks Vic
I'm not sure you can consider anything I do as normal. No one has ever described me as normal, and there's a reason for that.

But I know what you mean my friend and I thank you for that, and for the kind words on my interpretation of JONK's music.

If was a fun exercise to be sure.

JONK did the hard work, all I did was fill in the blanks and trace around the dots until I had the picture.

Thanks for the great comments, glad you came over to listen and enjoyed the song.

Musical sandbox
Never thought of it that way... Every time tried as a kid to play in anothers sand box I got sand thrown at me! Maybe its different for musical sand boxes?

Anyway this is cool Ed! Fun that you are trying stuff like this!

I know what you mean about other people's sandbox Mark,
I got the same reaction when I was a kid. But then I never did think the way others did so I've always been sort of an outcast. The thing is, after I was about 10 I didn't give a damn anymore, I just did my own thing. I have found that musicians that love music are much more willing to share than the rest of society though.

Anyway, glad you like what I did with JONK's fine tune. It was a lot of fun, I just hope JONK doesn't get mad at me for messing up his song like I did.

Thanks for listening my friend, and for the kind words.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Sounds like you have
been takeing loop lessons. Like Roxylee said the guitars sound real. This is a very far reaching track and the additions are great. Zappa loops, ya that's it.
Zappa loops. Great job Ed, never know whitch direction you will be comeing from next.

To err is human,
to really surprise people you have to not be afraid to err. Ergo I like to take musical chances just to see what happens. (Did that make any sense at all ?)

JONK had a great track to start with and that makes it a lot easier when you're working with good material. Thanks for dropping in to listen Russ and for the kind words, especially the Zappa comment.

Authentic sounding...
If you hadn't confessed to employing only loops I wouldn't have guessed it Ed. Nice additions to Jonk's fine track.

Enjoyed!

Be well friend!

Well lets just see if JONK agrees
I certainly hope so, but if not, at least I had some fun doing it.

About the loops, I honestly feel that in the studio it's just like hiring studio musicians to play the parts you want to make up the music. Producers do that all the time, not loops so much, but musicians, and they get what's really important, a great sounding song by doing it.

Why should we be any different. We use the tools we have to make our music as good as we can make it. At least that's how I see it anyway, it's the song that counts.

If I can do a better job by playing the part myself, I will, but it not I'll let the pros do it for me.

Anyway, there I go off on a tangent again. Thanks for stopping to listen Micheal, I'm glad you like the effort and sent along the great comments my friend.

Take care, and I might add it's really good to see you back my friend.

Understood...
In the past, I have repeatedly taken a similar stance in the Forums in defense of loop usage.

Like you, I prefer to play the parts myself. That way I can continue to hone my limited skills. But if I couldn't, and a collab was not in the cards, I would feel no hesitation at employing the appropriate loopage. As you said, it's just another tool; and it's the SONG that matters!

Be well bro!

Feels "written in"
Hey, Ed! Those added drums, rhythms feel organic to Jonk's underlying tracks, and likewise the strings and additional layers that follow all feel like they were written in from the start. All in all, quite a fine accomplishment. And to think no musicians were harmed! BTW that's some kind of Predator-movie headgear, innit?

Actually, that's Kosh for the Babylon 5 TV series
but you knew that didn't you. He's the one saying "Listen to the music, not the song" at the beginning of the track. I have no idea why I put that in, except that I really liked his character on the series and the logic of his thoughts and words. You'd have to have seen the series to understand why.

Thanks for the great comments Bob. I wanted this to be a continuation and expansion of what JONK put up, without taking away from it. The fact that it sounds like it was "written in from the start" tells me at least I didn't go too far away from where JONK was headed.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what JONK has to say about that though.

Thanks Bro, glad you liked where I went on this one.

Be well and cool

JONK always has these challenging collabs.
I think this is a test, or maybe not. Maybe he just likes to make music.

Well I did have some fun with it, and I guess maybe you could call it Native American Disco if you want to. After all the original title JONK had on it was "Lakota/88bpm"

Thanks for coming by to listen Jack. Glad you enjoyed the ride and sent me a post card while you where out there on your "Trip"

Hello John, nice to finally meet you
Thanks for coming by to listen to JONK and I swap riffs. I'm thinkin' JONK got the better of me on this one, but not for lack of trying. But I kinda like the feel of this and the way it turned out. I just hope JONK likes it too.

Thanks for the kind words my new friend, they are very much appreciated.

Sometimes you just
gotta strike out in a different direction to expand your vision. This was one of those times. I really liked where JONK had gone with this and wanted to see if I could add to it without taking away from it.

Not too sure I did that, but I had fun, learned a little more about making music, and hopefully didn't take anything away from what JONK had given me to work with.

Thanks again for listening Bob. Glad you liked this one and I do appreciate the very kind words on it.

Now Jonk's gone
so I have no way to hear the original tracks. Doesn't really matter, I guess; this is such a cinematic piece that I'm lost in making up the movie it goes with.
Nice use of loops, for sure.!

Hey there Jim
Jonk did some almost "Native American" flute sounds and the deep skin drum. He also did the opening strings for it. He continued that kind of Indian theme throughout this with some interesting changes in textures and rhythm. I did most of the rest of what you are hearing, although it's so integrated it's hard to tell. Right up until the guitars start wailing, that's my work too.

Most everything I added was from loops, but I think it enhanced what JONK had done and made it different, if not better.

Glad you listened Jim and left the kind words for it. It is appreciated.

Be well and be cool,

Ed
