Description:
The title of this song is really Really Out Of Touch With A Touch Of Reality.I was reading about a woman named Sylvia in a Psyche text book in college. Sylvia suffers from schizophrenia. The text book transcribed one of Sylvia's poetic/prophetic outpourings. I was so taken by the humor and the sad truth these words beheld I wrote a song and used some of her lines (they appear in quotes)

Guest vocalist -

Female Voice: Victoria

Male Voice: Bruce

Drums: Mac Hines (yes, the same Mac Hines that recorded with Holdsworth)

Everything else: Ray Kainz

Lyrics:
ROOTWATOR -

Really Out Of Touch With A Touch Of Reality

©2004 Ray Kainz

Sylvia, just, isn't herself, anymore

"I'm pregnant with the child of christ" I hear her scream

Insane mind? Untamed? Blind? Genetic or a dream?

How can we see the souls of those who have been set free

Like this religious, mischief mistress with a paranoid creed

a scatterbrain soliloquy

"I am Florence Nightingale"

I hear her screaming

"Divorce isn't a piece of paper, it's a feeling"

"Archie Bunker wants me to play his niece on T.V."

"Mick Jagger is St. Nicholas. Santa Clause the Maharishi"

"The body runs on electricity and my wiring is all faulty"

She's really out of touch with a touch of reality

She's really out of touch with a touch of reality

really really out of touch really

She's really out of touch

"Ted Kennedy cured my ugliness"

"Mick Jagger wants to marry me"

And so you've heard her spoken word

on streets form coast to coast

When shouted in my own backyard

it's my ears immune the most

Mr. Government's trying to cover rent

with money he all ready spent

So Sylvia my girl take off your pearls

There will be no empathic roast

cuz they're really out of touch with a touch of reality

cuz they're really out of touch with a touch of reality

really really out of touch really

cuz theyr'e really out of touch

"a fly, is a teenaged, wasp"

Street-corner stage is what she craves

that's what they say anyway

we close the doors to pay for wars

what ever happened to the USA?

Mrs. Motherland hold her hand

and soothe her sour dreams

this orphaned child whose soul runs wild

maimed by you and me.

She's claimed by suffering

Defamed by a psyche sling

we're really out of touch with a touch of reality

we're really out of touch with a touch of reality

really really out of touch really

we're really out of touch

Lyric / Music dissonance &mdash 12/10/04 - 09:36:46 PM
Tough subject matter. I found it a bit hard to appreciate
the entire song thinking of this poor woman. That being
said, this is well produced and well written and
preformed, well, quite well. 8-9-8-8 from this left coast
listener. But... again, tough subject matter.

This time of year I always long for the left coast. Consider your self blessed!
Subject matter is kinda tough, If you were thinking about Sylvia then the song
worked.

Thanks for your time and comments Dadai!

The music you write is some of the best out there!!!!! &mdash 12/10/04 - 11:07:08 PM
Yes it is a fact!!!! Ray Kainz (Eleveneyes) knows how to
write a song! I love your unique way of making songs.
They are so original they cannot be compared to any other
style or band. The music is both well written and has alot
of gut in it, your tones are amazing. I love the way you
just use enough distortion, not too much just the right
amount. I use to know a kid who loved way too much
distortion, until I showed him your music, and then he
understood that, you don't need alot of distortion to have
great tone. Keep Rockin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice Voice &mdash 12/11/04 - 02:01:43 AM
Great music and the lead vocals are wonderful, however it seems the songwriting could use some work. Question, did you write your own Bio? If not you should tell your friends to tone it down a bit, just a tad over the top.

Hahaha! Cruel to be kind. Laughed muchly.

Like the song too by the way. Not many people here are doing this kind of
music this well.

Adequate in some ways &mdash 12/11/04 - 06:38:22 AM
Maybe the bio is supposed to be funny but it just put me off. If you're that
stuck on yerself, bro', there ain't nothin' MacJams can offer you.

Genius? Perhaps. However, if the mark of genius is taking complex things
and making them simple then this tune is a problem as it goes in the
opposite direction. It's in danger of doing what "Yes" did to rock some years
ago in that it makes it so smart that it becomes unapproachable. It's clever
musically, kind of pretentious lyrically, and who really would listen to it a
second time?

Adequate in some ways &mdash 12/11/04 - 11:59:18 AM
a bio should say something about your life and that's what mine does in
hopefully a somewhat entertaining way. If you're put off by it I'm sorry, don't
read it. but that's my life, not as exciting as crashing a motorcycle but at least
my bio tells you what instruments I play.

Taking something simple and making it complex. Actually, this is a very
complex subject matter, schizophrenia, and I was trying to make the music
kind of schizophrenic also, multiples personalities within song if you will. Plus
the song is not that complex, each verse uses the same chords and the
chorus is just three chord rock.

noetheless, Thanks for checking out my song and my bio!

Now after all this hoopla about your "overblown bio" I just had to check it out.

I *LIKED* IT!!!!

Hey, you gotta sing your own praises. Your bio was not really overblown, just
descriptive and entertaining.

I have been frustrated many times with most people's BLANK or two-line bios
which don't SAY anything. I wish more folks here would be more imaginative
and descriptive in their bios. I truly enjoyed reading yours!

ROCK ON!

In life there is always balance. My "over the top" bio has to be "over the top"
to make up for bios that read like yours: blank space. kickinthebox criticises
my bio on my song page when on kickinthebox's bio page there are NO
SONGS and NO BIO! Should I use your bio kickinthebox as a template of how
to keep my bio "under the top"?

SO much here! &mdash 12/12/04 - 09:22:53 AM
You've got an incredible amount of sounds going on in
this tune, many artful little musical flourishes and
textures.

I like your chord progressions -- very interesting. The
drum track is varied and complex; quite well done!

Vocals are excellent and well-balanced with the intricate
accompaniment.

The musical content was so interesting to listen to on this
track that I really didn't focus on the lyrics....but I'm very
glad that you posted them so I could follow along on the
second listen. They are as equally complex as the musical
accompaniment, which unifies this song effectively.

The song art was WEIRD and didn't really fit what I was
hearing, but at least it woke me up and made me laugh.

I know I probably overuse the word "ARTFUL" in my
comments on MacJams in general, but that term is very
appropriate for this song!

Very well done.

enigmatically insightful &mdash 12/13/04 - 11:00:56 AM
Great, great lyrics. I could see her on the street off of
Union Square, I think I know her, actually, this Sylvia.
Broken mirrors of each. Twisted, funny, whimsical, sad,
enigmatically insightful. Wonderful production across the
board. Altho, with lyrics this complex, I found it too hard
to follow along without the use of the lyric sheet (thanks
for posting them, by the way). Another pro track.

Personally not my style of tune. But the quality and talent are definately there. Plus, you took the time to present it professionally with art, lyrics, and description which I appreciate. Well done.

God I LOVE P90's &mdash 12/13/04 - 01:05:07 PM
You have the exact sound I like on your crunchy stuff. Just
sounds like a curled lip.. I have a buddy who has a few
old gits including a Les Paul junior (with a single P90) and
the sound blows me away, have tried a few (Really like the
PRS McCarty gold top) but can't bring myself to pay. You
got me thinking again...

Damn dude you sound GOOD on that thing. Oh liked the
track too...almost sounded like the Spin Doctors on the
chorus..Very cool..yeah...liked it.

I agree with you Ringo, something about p-90's that just ROCK! More body
than regular single-coils but more expressive than humbuckers. I have two
guitars with p-90's. One is a Hamer Gold Top Studio Custom, and the other is
this Jackson arch-top with Seymour Duncan p-90's. The Hamer sounds great
but is alot thicker sounding than the Jackson. Quality instruments like PRS's
are worth the money, the materials are better, wood is better, (especially with
a PRS I would suggest only getting a private stock #10), workmanship is
better, attention to details are better, as a result, TONE is better!
Also, Reverend Guitars are
fantastic instruments that are a fraction of what a PRS or Les Paul would cost
and they do come
with p-90's. Hand made in Michigan, USA using hand-carved necks. Worth
checking out. Plus you can get a decent Reverend used on ebay for only
$400-$600 bucks.

Thanks for the tip, dude, I'll check them out! All US stuff is really cheap now
because of the exchange rate (I live in London).

Cheers,

smart rock &mdash 12/14/04 - 08:06:27 AM
syliva's quotes were my favorite part, and the clear pop rock stylings of your indredible chorus so perfectly played. even though it wasn't political, it started feeling too political about 2/3s in for me, almost preachy, when the humor and clever craziness of the first half lyrics already said it. even though i really like that you're telling a complete story here. don't want to discourage antyihg, because i love what you do and caan't wait to hear more and more and more...

Yes, fantastic lyrics. Do you write them before you write
the music? Anyone that feels bad for Sylvia when listening
to this goofyass song missed the point and tone of this
number as far as I'm concerned.

Nice of you to get Steven Hawking to sit in with you.
What's he get paid for V.O. these days?

This one does change up just a bit too much for me. Yes,
I understand that you wanted to add the skitzo quality to
the music, but it sacrifices continuity and listenability. I
hear a lot of Be Bop Deluxe in this one.

Fantastic image. Made the chocolate milk come out my
nose.

You are building quite an impressive collection of songs
here. I hope you continue!

My 2 cents ont he bio- Less IS more, always leave them
wanting . . . that said, I guess my 2 word bio needs work,
eh? I'll get right on that . . .

"fantastic lyrics. Do you write them before you write
the music?"

For this song, the lyrics were written first. Most of the time, for songs with
lyrics I try to have lyrics before the music. It helps me focus my musical ideas.
In fact I used to play this song with another band in the mid 90's. The music
was written by everyone in the band except me, it was completely different.
All acoustic with upright bass. They had the music, I had the lyrics. Was an ok
little ditty. The band broke up, I kept the lyrics and wrote new music. Voila!

Steven Hawking - you recognized his voice! Got him real cheap!

As far as continuing with my collection of music, God willing I hope to
continue.

Regarding the bio, I don't even care.

Thanks for your time and thoughts Troy. Keep Rockin'!

Great production and I like the harmonies too.

Psych student? &mdash 01/22/05 - 04:23:41 AM
Didn't realise you are/were a psych student? I'm a
psych lecturer. Schizophrenia's a frightening but
therefore facinating subject. I can see why you
wanted to write a song about it. Of course technically
there's some difference between schizophrenia and
multiple personality disorder (in theory, anyway) but
that's just me talking shop. Very difficult to follow 'I
Smoke A Pipe' but I think you did the right thing by
attempting something completely different. I'm not
sure I understand the comment that suggested this
was difficult to listen to. It does sound quite
complicated in places but as you say "each verse uses
the same chords and the chorus is just three chord
rock". Just goes to show what you can do with three
chord rock! I think I gave this 8 8 7 8 but this
comment has taken me so long to type that I've
almost forgotten. Keep 'em coming.
