Description
Our first weekend motorcycle trip on my much loved Honda Magna happened in mid-April. It was a wonderful jaunt east from Seattle over the Cascade Mts., then south along the Yakima River Canyon, over another Cascade pass, and then steeply down to the awesome Columbia River gorge. From that junction when you turn east again, there is about an 85 mile stretch along the Washington side of the river that is spectacular in its beauty and also very isolated. There are almost no other vehicles around except the occasional trains that run east/west along the river there.

That weekend, the main melody of this song started floating around in my head and I got to work on it as soon as I returned home. The second real trip of the season was over Memorial Day Weekend – a 4 day run eastbound over the Cascades, through Idaho and over the Bitterroot Mts. into Montana. This time I had an mp3 of the new song in a close-to-finished state to listen to during the ride, and then work on a little in the evenings (have laptop, will travel!) When the weather is cooperating and all systems are “go”, motorcycling evokes such a feeling of flight – soaring, leaning, carving the turns - and an immense sense of freedom. This music tries to capture the best feelings of flying along the road.

A new little “Flip” video camera was added to the motorcycle gadgets toward the end of the ’08 riding season, and my travel passenger (Jodene) has started taking some great footage from the back of the bike. So I thought I’d try embedding a first motorcycling movie that includes scenes from: North Cascades Highway (WA); Yakima River Canyon Highway (WA); Lake Roosevelt (meaning the dammed up Columbia River) ferry crossing (WA); Columbia River Gorge (WA - and yes, the train engineer DID toot his whistle in response to my wave!); bridge crossing at Glen Canyon (UT); summit at Independence Pass (the very high Rockies of CO). Videography and movie making by Jodene, to the soundtrack of “MagnaFlight.” Special thanks as always to kassia for the many, many listens and helpful feedback along the way

****Warning – if you have any challenges with motion sickness, you should NOT watch this video – it’s pretty jiggly on a tiny little camera over bumpy roads, on a kinda fast moving motorcycle!

Wonderful, Karen
I'd almost forgotten how free you feel when riding a bike. This gave it back to me and the music fits the flight perfectly. Love the music and the way it describes the feeling of freedom you get on a bike.

Riding Music
Thanks for posting this travel log. Inspiring chart, but curious, I hear the music box. The scenes and transitions are very effective, the idea of controlled motion is strong.
I do these bike treks myself. I went to Bob Wills hometown, Turkey Texas for a Poker Run, that would make an interesting companion for this experiment. Too much work though! I'm grateful you made this and shared it with us.

Gorgeous
So wonderful to finally go on a ride with you... perfect music for the video, loved the little hand-tapping-to-the-music shots interspersed with the stunning scenery. I would have liked a few subtitles telling me where we were (I didn't know the Colorado river was in Montana! :-) because I'd LOVE to visit some of those spots too. Anyway, beautiful music, as always, with the obligatory and apropos "Magnatone Crescendo", great piano and instrumentation work.

EDUARD!!!
thanks so much for this comment! we talked about putting subtitles in the movie with locations, but decided it would be too distracting - but of course, i know where we are! generally, the red rock shots are Utah, the super high mountain (way above the tree line) is in Colorado, and all the rest are various parts of Washington, with the really GREEN and SNOWY mountain shots being in the North Cascade Mts. That train shot is along the Columbia River. There - ya got your subtitles - LOL

The composition is absolutely gorgeous Karen. The video makes me want to get a bike asap. Hi Karen.......
Another classic track. Very enjoyable and, with the added dimension of the video, I was transported to where you both were.

The scenes were awe inspiring and your music gives me that sense of 'nature imminent'. Lots of movement and the piece was put together 'just so' and it worked extremely well.

I look forward to more spectaculars!!

Take care.

Stupendous!
Whoah! It was all progressing very smoothly, very pretty, and then you just kicked it up a notch with that modulation and more rhythmic quality of your second (?) section… completely unexpected, but totally convincing and, frankly, it rocks! My only nit to pick is that I think the quality of the strings samples used in the first section isn't up to the sonic standard you have everywhere else (including, curiously enough, the strings sound in the second section (at least I think it's the second one... the one where you have modulated at the start)… basically, it's kind of a 'spongy' sound, meaning quite slow on the attack portion of the note… but as I say, this is a nitpicky thing to comment on, because overall it is quite stupendous, wonderful, and extraordinarily beautiful, as is all your music.

Hi Clark
it's interesting that this sounds like section one and section two to you - i need to listen to it with that in mind. i didn't do anything different with the strings from one part of the song to the next - i wonder if it's just because there's less going on in the first part that's standing out to you that way? i have the strings backed up 3/16th's i think, throughout the song, to try to help them attack on time - sigh - guess i need to go back to the drawing board on that. but thanks for your kind and always helpful comments clark - i so appreciate you on MJ!

A "vista" even a Mac user can love!
This builds like a Brian Wilson operetta (per the recent "Smile!" album.) Magna-ficent, really, and inspiring. This feels so... so... American in that "road = freedom" sense. Not to mention that bikes get WAY better mileage than cars, and you get WAY more nature (in your teeth, even) on a bike than in a car. Gorgeous music, with an equally great (and not too shaky) video, to boot.

Brian Wilson
well that's a very high compliment in my book! (I loved "Smile"). My bike gets about 45 mpg when everything is perfect (constant speeds, no wind, etc) - it's not THAT much better than a car really - and a heck of a lot more expensive to maintain frankly. All that being said - I'd rather ride than drive any (non-rainy) day! Thanks for the comment!

Sigmund said 2936 days ago (June 12th, 2009)
Sigmund's Wife
I just happened to sit down at the desk and noticed that my husband "Sigmund" left
this vid cued up since he viewed it earlier, so I indulged. I hope you don't mind but
I just had to comment on what could be considered a mini vacation out of an otherwise
hectic day.
There with my cat in my lap, we rode as passengers on a mini journey that should have
definately lasted longer. This idea is inspired. Much in the way one would take a
glider flight into the blue, this ride holds the magic and freedom of the open road
filled with the sights and sounds most can only imagine. Like a perfect daydream, this little
journey inspires a wealth of free thought, and the birth of a plan for a someday
reality.
The music heightens the sensation of this free-ride bringing forth all of the
emotion and depth that fills the soul with the purest form of happiness like that of a
child. But a day-in-the-life so seldom explored, never forgotten, always missed, with
the hope of a chance to revisit...

Thank you for sharing your incredible journey, so simple as it may be- rest assured
that it is has touched all of those with whom you have shared it; in a very personal
way. How fortunate you are for not only living the dream, but possessing the talent and
presence of mind to find a way to share it.

Echo
I have to echo paul f page in saying I knew I would love this. You never disappoint! But that didn't prepare me for how much I would love it! Terrific stuff. I especially like how you arrange with such dynamism and verve, and the colors of the instruments are just wonderful. The video is very well done; I think the 'jiggliness' adds to the magic. Kudos to Jodene. A magnificent track. Nicely done, Karen. You rock. Peace.

Hi Bill
well in fact, i had an unfortunate encounter with Trooper Blood in eastern Washington about 11 months ago - I'm hoping to make it another month without another ticket, because if I do, it will disappear from my record - LOL (special deal in WA because I hadn't had a speeding ticket in 3 years). Amazingly, I've only been ticketed for speeding that one time, though I've had a few ... um ... warnings. I think they're so thrown off by it being a woman driver, they kind of lose their focus and let me go (except not always). Thanks for your kind words Bill, I'm so glad you liked the song AND the vid!

man, great tune and a great ride! I ride a 1989 1200 sportster that I basically built. Is there anything besides the ferry that you didn't blow past? Good think Jodene hangs on tight!

actually, it's a teeny tiny ferry, and there was us and one car on it. the car was in front of us, and he pulled over the second we drove off the ferry so i could go past him. however, blowing past the actual ferry is ... um .. not advised! Hey! What the heck is going on here? I already commented? No - wait - where did SHE
come from? I guess I need to change my password LOL!

Anyway, this is fabulous, Karen. You do so many wonderful things in this piece to
make it so interesting, like the chord change and buildup right around a minute into
the piece. Then another slow buildup peaking at 2:30, then back down - now a shift up
- another buildup - crescendo - WOW - just wonderful! Your use of lots of beautiful
instruments, tastefully intertwined together to move the piece along is superb.

And, it is perfect for your video. After watching your video only once, I feel like I
suddenly know you a little better. Then as I listen to the piece again, the images
from the video replay in my mind's eye - especially the hand tapping! I certainly
hope that when the soaring video comes out my music is able to invoke the type of
emotional response your piece here does - if so I will feel that I truly have
accomplished something. Which is exactly how you should be feeling right now.

Congrats on this fine work, Karen. Thank you for sharing this.

Man... Ya can't blink around here...
Songs go up....with accompanying videos... get a million hits and a million fans...

You've definitely got 'soaring' all figured out, Karen.... Terrific flow and surprising dynamics... I like the parts where higher parts are underpinned with something neat in the bass...

I haven't checked out the video yet, but I will... One time in my life and one only I was in Washington and drove from Orcas Island south to San Francisco in a miniscule Datsun packed with sleeping bags, a tent and I think some Pillsbury cookie dough for quick energy and that trip still rests happily in my memory...

One thing- Youtube compresses the heck out of vids and sound really take a hit.
I'm not happy with what they did with several mine and when you compare your mpg here with your video you hear a huge difference. I've found that Myspace does a better job, especially with music. If you haven't already tried them, check them out. I'm sure you'd be a great Myspacer too.

Thanks for sharing
a beautiful ride, Cresting with the modulations, gliding down hill on those rolling arpeggios.

I will venture my first critique here and only because I like this so much. The mix seems a little heavy handed and over compressed. The song has so much inherent dynamics and sweet gentle phrasing I think the mix should of been handled delicately. Maybe starting much quieter to give it somewhere to go. Maybe it just my worn out ears but around the 4:00 mark when the drums come in I hear a lot of clipping distortion.

I hope you take this in the manner I intend. Believe me I would not venture an opinion if I didn't truly admire this work.

magnatone said 2934 days ago (June 14th, 2009)
Hi Mr. Bake
Thanks for the listen and comment. These are some interesting thoughts you've had, and confused me a little bit. After thinking about it awhile, I got to wondering if maybe you did your critical listening from the video rather than from the mp3. if you did, that would answer the question in my mind as to why you're hearing the song as over-compressed, and perhaps even why you're hearing clipping. YouTube does compress the video, and therefore the music, very heavily and the difference in sound quality between the song on the video and the song on the mp3 is remarkable. There really is no dynamic range to be heard in the song, on the video. The actual song file has just the smallest bit of compression. According at least to Audacity, the dynamics are within a quite wide range, and there is no clipping anywhere, including at around 4:00 where the drums come in. I also don't myself hear clipping or distortion even on the video version (i wouldn't have posted it otherwise), and i don't believe any of my critical feedback listeners have either (i HOPE they'd mention that!) - which is making me wonder about whatever it is you might be listening through as another possible culprit there. that's the only thing i can think of, for why you're hearing clipping/distortion, but people who know much more than me might have other ideas. and there's always the possibility that MY ears are shot, and it's really there.

All that being said, i'm sure my mixing leaves a lot to be desired and i am certainly learning as i go. Your feedback is making me think again about dynamics, and I appreciate the time you took in making your comment. Also, glad that in spite of it all, you liked the song! Thanks!

Re the distortion I heard
I listened a few more times and I still hear a fuzzy distortion around 4:00 between the acoustic guitar (if that is what it is) and the horns. I suspect that it is something to do with my set up because I have heard the same on others tracks as well and no one else hears this. My ears could also be fried as I spent too many years on stage wearing in ear monitors. I am using decent headphones straight into my Mac and I also listened through my monitors and I still hear it. The more I think about it the more I think it is just me. The frequency I am referring to is right in the crash cymbol range and that is where my ears are probably damaged.

You have done great work here. Please don't take my little idiosyncratic fit seriously.

hi again CB
well thanks for taking the time to listen again, and in a couple of different ways. i don't know what to say - i'm just not hearing a distortion, and have asked a couple of other people now to listen again too. i guess hearing is truly subjective in many ways, but i appreciate that you're trying to figure out if it's real or if it's Memorex (lol). don't worry, that didn't feel anything like an "idiosyncratic fit", and i appreciate your thoughtful commentary. BTW, you can reply to your original comment, which would put this latest comment from you, and mine back to you, all together up there on a thread - easier for keeping track of what we're talking about!

Out of luck
I'm listening here at work (shh, don't tell anyone) and I really want to see the video. I'm presuming you posted an embedded YouTube link at the end of your description. However, our firewall smartly blocks sites like YouTube, so all I get is white space. I'll watch at home.

Regardless, I can speak to the music, it is a truly grand scale. I can see in my mind's eye how it's gonna match up with a majestic motorcycle journey through the mountains. I can't even comprehend how many tracks you used on this one. A new instrument was introduced at seemingly every turn (pun only marginally intended).

I've been fascinated with the strings in the Orchestral Jam Pack now that I have them as part of my Logic 8 purchase. Getting them to sound "real" is a study in articulations. I know about using the modulation wheel to get different types of sounds out of each patch, but getting them to all flow - with traditional vibrato applied realistically, soft/sharp attacks and so on - that's an art and a science all wrapped up into one. You've done a good job here, but I think there's even another level to get to with a little experimentation. If I learn any tricks, I'll be sure to share (even if they end up being old tricks to you).

So many other aspects were done very realistically ... most notably to me: the percussion (esp. the transition swells), the flute accents and the strummy acoustic guitar that appears in solo at the very end. I also think you made very complimentary sonic choices, "picking your patches". The real genius here is your song writing skill - writing a work that stands on its own as a modern classical composition.

Impressive! Thank you for sharing.

MIKE!!!
so glad you could stop by - and i hope you'll have a chance to see the jiggly video sometime! you're so right about the strings - i've talked to futzpucker about using the mod wheel - i do all that orchestration by penciling though, not by playing - i only actually play the piano part - so i haven't figured out how to follow that suggestion. guess i'd have to pencil it in, then read the music, and play what i penciled?? lol - there are the addition of volume points for the half and whole string notes to make it sound a little more organic - a trick i learned from kassia - but i know there's lots more one can probably do to make it more realistic. thanks for your thoughtful comment and taking the time to make it! i miss the band!

Spectacular, Karen!
Thank you so much for posting the video! Extremely well produced. Everything flowed very well together. Having recently crashed, however, I got a small case of vertigo in a few parts of the video where I noticed the camera wasn't looking straight ahead. Eeeeek! Just my heightened senses right now. Thank you for posting such wonderful music!

this music comes from a motorcycle....but life is odd.....you need to teach me how to embed the video in the songpage...very nice indeed.

this is totally beautiful...again, your music seems to touch all the hearts...look at your list of people who fav'd this...the blusers, folkies, prog rockers, alt rockers...all touched by this music...quite a feat. wonderful wonderful and great too.
(even the sythesized guitar at the end!)....this is the music of a person who leads a happy life, is full of the spirit, and is secure enough in her happiness to bless us all by sharing it.

My apologies
For taking so long to get here. We just sent in Rebsie's new album for replication... so I'm trying to get caught up on some listening.

Living near the Rockies, I can certainly appreciate the majestic mountain landscape on your video... and the panoramic view from the back of a motorcycle. I like the slow build with the bells behind the piano lines... and that key and dynamic shift a minute and a half in is magical. The crescendo at the snow line is exquisitely timed... breathtaking actually... The music is hallmark magnetone... with some really fine percussion work in the final section... and a great use of dynamics in and around the piano. Very nice video editing too... I bet that was a lot of fun... and very fulfilling to finish!
