Description

The genre for this is not quite correct. It should be either Electronica or Ambientle, as it contains a hotch potch of elements from many genres.

It is too fast for plain old Ambient, Space Ambient is represented (of course), Experimental is there, Latin is there and Electronica seems most reasonable, hence the 'Melting Pot Mix' in the title.

Maybe there should be a 'Cross-genre' genre?? Or should it be a 'Blurred-line Mix'.

ANYWAY.........There seems plenty of energy in this mix. It was put together for inclusion on my 'Another Day in Space' album but didn't quite make it, due to it's intermixed (another genre-title contender) tendency.

The piece flitters and floats and rushes and calms and, like water, finds all the musical cracks as far a rhythm (for a whole piece) goes. (If this actually makes any sense. I'm rushing somewhat).

A maelstrom of sound
Huge sound, with the Reinholt-patented chord changes. Lots of movement. Exquisitely detailed. I thought the percussion, especially the tuned percussion, added a lot of flavor (I'm somewhat of an anti-percussionist, but it has its place). And you've tastefully omitted a thumping disco bass drum. The space is entirely filled in a most maelstromish way, swirling. Another top production and composition.

Henke and I decided that there should be 'Whatever' genre category. But for you, maybe the admins should initiate a 'Reinholt' category.

Hi Duane......
I also have pet hates about percussion, and would sooner leave this sort of sound out of a lot of my pieces, but things seemed to fit in this mix. I'm glad you appreciated this aspect of the mix.

As I said in the description, I couldn't pin the genre down, so Experimental hit most of the nails on the head in spite of the 'anything goes' definition of the genre's potential content. Music is always sound but sound is not always music.

The 'Whatever' genre seems just up my street. I use the word a lot when I'm talking to people, as well as the word 'Doobry', so that could be another contender. Doobry means, to me, anything that doesn't fit into any specific descriptive category, and you can also use the word 'Doofa' as an alternative. I know I do!! Ha ha.

Thanks for your thoughts on this 'genre thing'. Maybe I should just use the description 'Sound. Tending towards music' for all my mixes. That way I probably cover all angles.

Sometimes my musical brain has to wait until after I've put the basics down before it kicks in and takes over. Sometimes I enter a mix with no idea where I'm going or even what I'm doing but usually something stands out as I proceed. Usually....

Reinholtish...Reinholtian...Rein-tient?? It doesn't matter what we call it since it is driving, swirling, spacious, always opening new sonic levels and tonal vistas. These are only some of the qualities that make your work so very cool Paul.

The temporary loss of the rhythmic elements and their rebuild was a nice feature of this work. It seems like your head lives in the most unimaginably large and colourful place, peppered with dashes of glowing forms each in movement.

Another download - fortunately I have a large disk... :o)

Thanks for the kind words. I do try to put 'something else' into my mixes here on Macjam's, to make them different in some way or other.

I seem at the moment to be taking a break from making music and doing more music research and putting my studio back in order again. I've been working off of my knee for the last three years or more (using only a laptop and 25-key MIDI controller) and I now need to spread my music-making apparatus out a little more, to give myself room to breathe, and set up my Roland 61 key Fantom ready to tickle the imitation ivory's.

Stay tuned for a change of pace.

Early TD?
Have you heard the early albums of Tangerine Dream? With song titles such as "Sunrise in the third system", "Birth of Liquid Plejades", "Nebulous Dawn" and others you seem to have the same origin of music making - space! These space songs by TD are even more experimental than this one, but moving on to an album like Phaedra (1974) also your musical styles are converging. With your modern equipment you sure get a more surging drive in your drones, but I can hear similarities in the compositions. Might be an inspiration for you if you have not heard it before...

(In my iTunes list most TD songs say Genre: Electronic. I don't know. I'd prefer Reinholt before Whatever for this stuff though ;-)

I had not heard very much of their music until someone else on MJ's said that my music was similar to theirs. I have since listening to their music and I agree that my music does have similar elements to theirs. I'll look up the tracks you mention and see what I make of them.
