Description
Crawling Around was written in 1981 by David Griffiths and Bryn Corbett and performed in our band at that time 'Childhood's End' Our line up was fairly basic - casio keyboard, electro harmonix drum machine and more traditional instruments like guitar and bass.
I always loved 'Crawling Around' - in our rehearsals and when we played it live. I was always sad that we didn't record it properly.
Fast forward to 2003. I had been living in Phoenix AZ for about 18 months and I had started to get the urge to make music again after a very long hiatus. During a trip back home to the UK, I decided I was going to ship all my stuff over to the USA. I can remember packing the boxes at my sisters house (9 in total) full of synths, mics, samplers, drum machines etc etc. I also remember paying the shiping on those boxes which came to more than my plane ticket did.
When I got back to Phoenix, I anxiously awaited the boxes. They began to arrive, one by one until I eventually had them all. I set up a small, makeshift studio in a room in the apartment I was renting at the time. I remember advertising for musical collaborators on craigslist or whatever its equivalent of the time was. This was how I met Anna Caramanna. We must have impressed each other when we met in person at the Willow House coffeeshop - maybe because we were both able to quote Brian Eno records...
I asked Anna to come and sing for me and she agreed
I had been playing the old Childhoods End rehearsal tapes at the time and Crawling Around was fresh in my mind. I played the tape for Anna and asked her to sing it. She added a verse of her own to accompany my new synth pizzicato backing and the groovy rhythms from the Korg Electribe drum machine I had just purchased. All of the music was done with my outboard midi gear; yamaha TG33, novation bass station, alesis quadraverb, 3 EMU samplers...just before I started getting in to software instruments and effects with a passion
The first drum sound you hear is lifted directly from a version of Crawling Around recorded on a cassette tape at a rehearsal in 1981...the rest is from 2003
I loved Crawling Around in 1981, 2003 and I still love it in 2009 despite all the faults in this recording....
Cheers Anna!

love some of the weird, choppy gate FX. all hardware too, I love it. Nice job guys! It's got that quirky electro style that typefies good electro for that era for me.
