Description
Track #1 from Bar RRR. 1987. This is basically just me on the Chapman Stick playing along with a previous track I recorded using the JX3P. This is one of my favorites from the tape. Even though these recordings have lost a lot of their range, I still have a particular fascination with them. The Stick and the synth were a good combo. I miss them both.

drift
this is completely addictive - it could be used to induce a deep trance state, except it would do that so well, one might never come back to the world. very very cool!

Progressive, addictive and excellent
Far beyond any comments I expected to receive on this unpolished bit of history. Thanks very much for the comments, and for suffering through it. Quite something that it even exists at this point, so I should be happy as it was scheduled for seasonal shed purging.

very nice
love the loop like sound you get from the Roland. I have a JX3P and you can get a lot of really interesting stuff out of it. this is very 70's sounding to me, and I actually like the sound quality quite a bit. really nice track. there is a song on my page called Jamaica that is primarily the JX3P doing a looping sound similar to this in a way (if you're curious what someone else did with it).

Will definitely check out the track here this morning. Do you.have the analog controller for yours? That was what really set those apart from other synths of the day. If I remember correctly, you could overylay basically 8 "tracks" (sounds) of up to 128 steps each...and then there is that row of magic buttons across the front where you saved the sounds, a real "players" tool for sure. Damn I miss that thing. Sold mine for $350 to my brother (complete with Anvil road case and stand no less) who promised me he's sell it back to me before anyone else...and then he ended up trading it all in on something without telling me.

i do
have the controller. makes for a way more satisfying experience as that was definitely the age of presets. mine needs some work as it got banged up when I took it on tour and now the controller and the sequencer bit don't work right. glad that I have some of my sounds still in there. Too bad about the loss of yours. You can get quite a bit out of soft synths though: seems like I raraely break out the hardware stuff anymore.

Nice mood
I enjoy it too. Wraps itself around you very nicely - that's it.

Quite the mantra. Thanks !

wrapped...rapped...raptured
Thanks Boundless. Interesting to be getting comments on music made 22 years ago that was never heard by anyone. My efforts of digitizing these old tapes has recently been hampered by the fact that the fast forward and rewind no longer work on my Tascam. Amazingly, it has worked flawlessly for the past 25 years, so I guess I shouldn't complain. Thanks for the comments...glad you enjoyed. Listen to some more!

Well it hasn't spoiled this anyway. Shades of Soft Machine, methinks. Very hypnotic, lovely build up and super cool.

Nice one.

Time machine
Dava beat me to it. Soft Machine memories for sure. There was much to like back then. This is a wonderful piece of work, and I'm glad you decided to post it. The recording sounds old, but in this case, it adds just the right atmosphere for the music.

Sounds Old
Every once in awhile, it's nice that something wears a time stamp. I definitely appreciate the comment and the reference. I guess it's the complete lack of width to begin with when it comes to cassette, but then there is this natural aging thing that happens as the highs and lows start to just disappear. I could nurse some of it back, but there you have it, the age of sound, like watching old Movie Time reels at theater, dust, scratches and all. I suppose that's why I still have a working turn table and an ever building supply of vinyl.
Thanks Silentio!

inspiring
It is an inspiring groove. Makes my mind play along. I actually enjoy the withered sound of the old tape. It makes it sound like it's coming from a universe away. You could do some interesting things with this letting it build up with clear fidelity new elements, filling it out and growing and then keep stripping it back down to the original again. Cool stuff, Blaine.

Long cattle flight across Montana
Interesting start...backwards fade in. Like an old Conestoga wagon with an FM radio. Love the organ. Nice build and variations. Could have come sooner. Trance-like. Long drive at night.

cattle flight
Thanks RS. These were always meant to have something more added, maybe some ebow, or cello, elec bass, but of course, I never got around to it. I was hearing some piano over it in my head tonight while writing this, problem is finding the tuning. Thanks for the listen.

Very hypnotic. Lots of layers and sounds that need listening to. A hint of Soft Machine perhaps without the brass, just the experimental stuff.
