A Taste of Paradise

Description
As I continue to rummage around my refrigerator, I keep finding things. I found this one behind some moldy cheddar cheese from the last Super Bowl.

Anyway. I recorded most of this with an old drum mic that I used to record the whistling. Yes, whistling. You have to like a song with that. I didn't want to use my electric acoustic. I wanted to have "real" acoustics. Currently, that problem has been solved. But, in 2007, when this was recorded, it was the best I could do.

The painting is by Thomas Kinkade, a painter from one of my favorite towns, Capitola, California. Some may think his paintings are a bit cheesy, but when I look at this one I think it's a taste of paradise.

Lyrics
A Taste of Paradise

As I lie here in my bed
I can see your green eyes once again
Should I write the note I wrote, the note I wrote to you,
but now I have to say good-bye

All my life
I've been looking for a taste of paradise
I can see it in the mirror,
but it's not getting any clearer
Now I have to say good-bye

As I stand here in my room
I hope the answer will come soon to you
Should I think about thoughts and think about thoughts of you,
but I have to say good-bye

All my life
I've been looking for a taste of paradise
I can see it in the distance,
but it only lasts an instant
now I have to say good-bye
oh I never want to say good-bye

As I think here in my brain
All the snow, wind and the rain
All this pain I put away
I think of thoughts of you
But oh, how I say good-bye

All my life
I’ve been looking for a taste of paradise
I can see it in the mirror,
But it’s not getting any clearer
Now I have to say good-bye

Ok... um...
You keep your music in the refrigerator!? Does it sound better being preserved that way? Maybe I should start doing this as this is really really cool Dave!

You need to whistle more! That was great!

It's just one of those tunes that thank goodness all the bells and things were not available for.... it just makes it so much more real.. Keep checking the fridge man ... these tupperware tracks are just too darn cool. I too love Kinkade. His work "sparkles" ... just like this tune ... EXCELLENT Dave !

Wow this is a good one.
It has a really interesting melody.
Like the acoustic sounding strum plus electric arpeggios... that's a cool sound.
The playing/singing/production seems tightly executed... maybe you should clean out the fridge and see what else ya got in there!

Very nice bro!
Classic lavalamp.

Like Mr. Holman, you have a signature sound. Instantly recognizable, like the face of a dear old friend.

Although the "electric acoustic" sounds fine, this could be worth at least a partial re-record with some warm acoustic guitars.

Enjoyed!

Be well friend!

I so glad you think I have a "sound". That's really important today. You made my day.

This could be done much better. Agreed-

When I think...

wow - i need to go check MY refrigerator! (I don't think i'm going to find anything THIS cool though) I'd had the thought to end my last song with whistling, but it seemed way too hard to follow through on that idea - well - you've inspired me. Love your style Dave, and this is a GREAT song to start my day!

the whistler
no cheese here.

great job on the intro and breaks with the whistling!
But I also dig the song in total.

If the MJ cover competition ever came around again like the one last year this is probably the one I would do.
the only problem is I can't whistle

Ricky Nelson
I saw him a few days before he died at a county fair when I was a kid. Never heard that tune though. Maybe I have, but the title I never heard.

Oh thanks Ridd. Good seeing you.

Whistling
I do have to like a tune with whistling. My brother likes to tell a story about seeing a band in Texas do "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" and the guy nailed the whistling... which, of course, makes the song. My bro would be impressed with your whistling. As am I. Now you need to cover Winds of Change and Patience.

This is a really cool song. I love how the chorus starts out. This is also a very clean sounding recording. Well done!

taste of paradise
has a tim booth feel. love the pause between good and bye - that small thing really makes the chorus. also you can never go wrong whistling. i normally use it to invoke some kind of partridge family vibe but here its more sergio leone.

favorite thing is the shambling along type groove and the sense of dramatic loneliness. if i had this tune on my walkman as a teenager i'd have listened to it while taking solitary walks on the beach and gazing importantly out to sea lol.

i like the "electric acoustic" - not sure if this would be as dramatic with an "acoustic acoustic". like the backup vox too - and the "should I think about" styling - cool. also i've always done all my vocals with a sm57, a "drum mic".

prob not related since he's from the other side of the pond. lead singer of the band James. he lives by the ocean and his solo stuff has a "beachy" feel.

Old Cowboy Song
That's what I hear here.

I think I thought I thunk it all before, but I see you saw I saw nothing like this before.

I always like your poetry Dave. Now Thomas Kincade? I don't care for his "poetry" but I'm in debt to him for inspiring you! Think he whistles while he works? Who cares? This isn't about Thomas Kincade....

ok ok
i do love a song with whistling. i also love moldy cheese. does that mean it's inevitable that i love this song? i never remember how those philosophical arguments work. anyway..um..i DO love this song! heartbreaking lyrics and the whistling adds a cool, bittersweet sort of melancholy. great stuff, as always.

I am a Kinkade fan as well. And a big fan of this track. Musicly everything is top's but the overall feeling and chord progression this delivers is mighty fine. Your vocals just round it out. Great job man, Thanks.

Very nice. I really really like this song! The elect guitar really stood out. And I like the whistling. Have you thought about counter melody at the end? Like mix a verse in with a chorus. Just seems to me that both melodies could entertwine!
