Description
Here's a song I've been trying to get together for a while. I was going for a sad yet ominous kind of feel. Suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Lyrics
YOU NEVER KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT ME DID YOU?
I DIDNT KNOW HOW TO BE ANYTHING ELSE
BUT YOU HELD THE WEIGHT OF IT ALL UP ON YOUR SHOULDERS
AND FOR THAT I'LL PUT THE BLAME OF IT ALL ON MYSELF

its been a while since you and I tried to put it all behind us
we spent a while pretending everything was ok
put on a smile so we can go out tonight
put on a smile that says everything is alright

BUT SOMEDAY WE'LL LOOK BACK ON THIS
AND LAUGH AT OURSELVES
YEAH SOMEDAY WE'LL GET OVER IT
AND GET OVER OURSELVES
SOMEDAY WE'LL LOOK BACK ON THIS
AND LAUGH IT
AND WONDER WHY IT WAS A BIG DEAL
SOMEDAY BUT NOT TODAY

hey
thanks feter. glad you like this. i tend to keep it pretty simple underneath everything, then trickthe listener into believing the song is complex and deep by piling on a bunch of other stuff on top hehe. thanks again

ominous
those off chords create just a touch of the dark side that sucks the listener in. Your voice sounds terrific Ridd. The backing parts are especially cool. Loved the ambient audio. Textured in just right.

thank you
glad you picked up on that. it gives the song a kind of off-center vibe, along with the backwards stuff and the drums that come in later with the stuttered kick. thanks for the review

Voice
I like the vocal interlude after the first time through the lyrics a lot. ktb makes a good point about the chords, they draw the listener into the lyric. Today I can be impressed, right!? Great stuff!

be yourself
excellent tune. i like the stark approach for starters. the change up in the middle is very cool. the ending guitars!!!!! oh yeah!

but i have to be honest with you, could be me, but the sleigh bells do get a bit to much after awhile.

otherwise great tune!

bells
Thanks Vic - really liking your latest posts. Thanks for the honest feedback. Im gonna go ahead and defend the sleigh bells though. I like em! I had an aversion to them in non christmas songs for awhile, but then I heard them as a percussion element rather than something that belongs on santas sleigh and I came to really appreciate what they can bring to a song. THAT SAID, maybe they can be a bit too up front in places - something I ll definitely consider changing when I remix-master this. THanks again!

cool.
I really did the fingerpicking after the solo, especially under the feedback. I agree with Vic, the sleighbells are a bit much. They're not bad, they just don't seem to fit in. The melody on the chorus (if it is the chorus) is really cool.

Starting with a Taylor doesn't hurt, but how do you get such a crisp acoustic sound? I want to copy your process.

guitars
thanks eric. the picking at the end was a happy accident. i originally dropped everything out but forgot those, and when i heard them continue at the end it sounded nice. the guitar sound actually has a lot to do with the guitar itself, but all i do is put my snowball mic right up to the spot between the neck and soundhole and play. the rest is EQing and mastering. as for the bells, see above post! thanks for the honest feedback though :)

I love this song - really
the relaxed, almost weary vocals with the sparse acoustic arrangement - great sleigh bells - that dissonant turn on the last chord - all excellent I also like the kick into electric that stays understated and doesn't go up into frustration. Really smart tune - well done.

looking back on this
man this is a typically great rsorenson acoustic tune but what sets it apart is that really creative break with the fingerpicking, and more importantly imo the solo with the dueling distortion lines that ends it, brother that is some kind of cool.

also like the print - looks like an illustration from Tolstoy or Chekhov.

Get over ourselves...
Man this is just so many kinds of beautiful. That loping guitar rhythm is to die for and your vocal here is awesome. Instrumental break towards the end with the kids in the left ear is fantastic. Kudos

High notes!
Way to go Ridd. I bet that was a bitch to hit those. Enjoyed the more simple approach on this one, with the gradual build up. You have a marvelous sound to your voice-soulful. One could tell you are honest and sincere.

Dug the solo too.

Very, very nice song,

Dave

back for
a second listen. Good tune. The kids in the background... is that the same sampleyou used in a pevious song? The one you wrote after that truck crashed in to the playground... Not as a call out. I'm wondering if the two songs tie in to each other. Just curious.

found
the song... Sushi restaurant, not a playground. The song "Dream".

yeah good catch
the songs arent related, i was just too lazy to find another sample. the children are supposed to represent a longing to a return to innocence or the beginning of the characters' relationship when things were better. corny!! thanks for the second listen

love the woodblock
my rsorenson/Satellite Tragedy playlist on the iPod is one of the most played and I love you for giving me something new to add to it. everyone stuck in Silicon Valley traffic gets to hear you as I sit in my car in the heat and turn the radio up loud. i love these more acoustic tunes you do. this one has a really cool beat. the percussion rocks all the way through. your vocals are stunning - i really love your higher range and falsetto. some cool, eerie feeling stuff with the backwards tracks and the kids playing. My only nit on this one is that the panning seemed a little extreme to me, but I was listening in earbuds. Anyway, another very cool tune - thank you!
