Lyrics
GYPSY DOWN

I.
I say you’ll know him when you see him.
His manner will betray him.
He’s the kind of guy who stands out from the crowd.
He’s altogether without passion;
for trend, or for fashion.
He’s quiet, but he likes his music loud.

1st CHORUS:
Nobody knows where he comes from;
and he ain’t gonna tell them!
What they don’t know won’t hurt them, after all!
Some folks will try to get to know you,
just so they can use you;
but he don’t play those kind of games at all.

II.
Although they’ve all tried to teach him,
their lies will never reach him;
for he knows what their slick words REALLY mean.
He’s neither toady, nor fool;
his course cuts straight and true,
between the poles of ideology.

2nd CHORUS:
He’ll never judge you by your party.
He’s a student of the heart;
and it’s your character that matters most of all.
While he is faithful in friendship;
he is fearless in conflict.
He’ll have your back when it’s up against the wall!

III.
He travels through the ages,
a-seeking out the sages;
responding to his Inner Mystic’s call.
He is a partisan of reason;
and non-dual in his vision.
His consciousness is like a crystal ball.

3rd CHORUS:
Well world events don’t hypnotize him.
He’s focused on the cosmos;
so the universe will catch him if he falls.
And though some fear and hate his freedom,
and may try their best to snare him;
they’re never gonna take this gypsy down!

The essence of Jimi mixed with the James Gang. Yes, good call. Really enjoyed all the guitars, Whoever you wrote this about sounds like a helluva guy. Great drum work from Mr. Mackle. Nothing beats real drums. Good rocker. Love the big rock finish.

Hey Reggie!
While the Gypsy in this tune has qualities I both admire and aspire to, he's a purely fictional character.

Glad you enjoyed all this racket! Ha ha...

Is that the Dot ? man ...rock so good ...top notch drums indeed ...
loved the arrangement and the vocal work ...just a great job brother !!
loved the progressive guitars ....just perfect ...kudos ..thnx alot
for sharin !!!!
Calchas said 142 days ago (July 6th, 2009)
Hi Feter!
Yeah bro, that's my Dot. For the main guitar parts I plugged it directly into my Mac, and ran it through Amplitube Jimi Hendrix software (along with some further tweakage from LE7). The wah-guitars were mic'd. I used my Behringer Tube Amp, and my Digitech RP250 pedal's "Hendrix" setting for these. Then I added a little phasing.

I'm not real pleased with how the bass turned out on this one. It's a difficult tune for me to play bass to, and I had a lot of trouble getting the sound I wanted. Plus I kept overloading my Mac's processor!

Oh well...I'm glad you dug it my friend. And how about that Mr. Mackle!

Take care!

Not a Martha Stewart
recipe is it? He’s quiet, but he likes his music loud. Anybody you know?
Lovin the Zappa flavored vox in the soup as well. Nice stuff man. And I agree, nothing like real drums and Mr. Mackle does it well. Great track, now what's for lunch?

...it DOES have the rawness of those two bands. I tried to get a crude tube-ish sound on the main guitar part. Not easy when relying only on software. Perhaps I succeeded better than I thought...

Somethings are only possible with "purple tubes". Taking hot tube out of the amp and cooling them very quickly, so that they turn "purple". This was discovered by Roy Buchannon in '63, if my memory serves me correctly.
Purple tube tone, my have things come a long way...some geek will read this and make a plug in!

Blue Cheer Rewind
Thanks Mike, both records in the office! A taste that few people can relate too, but inside every wrapper was exploration, compared that with the Gloved One, I mean...where is that Maudana CD gonna take you but the View? Lol.

Agreed Daug!
I did like "Summertime Blues" of course, and I REALLY dug "Parchment Farm," on that first album. But I love every single freakin' note on that trippy second album. The cover art was over the top too, and very engrossing when under the influence of a benign but illegal substance. lol

Okay,
I would throw panties on the stage! Of course, you'll have to wait a bit. No passion? Seems like there is a lot of verve, energy and idiosyncratic joie de vivre. Drums were capital, Andy rocks! Still LOVE it! My kind of guy, most probably. I always liked gypsies. This is a very infectious song, I mean, it kind of gets in one's head and pings around in there. I think you are a rock star. Yay! Great song! Thanks, once again.

yup. some band of gypsies and james gang. good call on that.

cool vintage guitars all around. The verse guitar riffs and vocals came out great. one of jimi's trademarks and you pulled off excellently.

Andy did a great job on the drums. a nice blend of mitch mitchell & Buddy Miles

Vicar!
Man...my ears were so shot after days of mixing that I said to myself: "This is pretty crappy, but I probably will only make it worse if I keep messing with it." So I posted it.

Now that my ears have had a day and a half to rest it sounds much better to me. I have gone ahead and made a few slight improvements on the master since I posted though...lol

Working with Andy has given me the courage to attempt things I wouldn't be as inclined to try were I just using drum loops. I hope he comes back to us soon. The man can do it all!

Glad you enjoyed this bro!

Rock on, brother!
I agree with the Hendrix and James Gang comments, but I also detect a good bit of Kansas in both the lyrics and the vocals. Of course, me and everyone else my age in my neck-of-the-woods listened to Kansas back in the 70s. *grin*

Fav'd, and will probably make the rounds around my workplace, thanks to me. *wink*

Cheers,
Jim

...I've always felt that, during the 70's, KANSAS was the best damn band in the USA. I'm a huge fan of their work...At least till Livgren left. But the magic lives on in PROTO-KAW!

Perhaps their influence was operating just below the surface of my consciousness when I wrote this. Sneaky, sneaky! I was TRYING to emulated Jimi and Joe Walsh. Oh well...

Thanks for dropping in and giving this one a spin my friend!

cool
really enjoyed this song, the guitar sounds and riffs are just awesome esp at around 2:20.
for some reason I want to hear this played live, outside. kind of a woodstocky vibe doncha think? although perhaps with a touch of prog in the lyrics and vox. I can almost hear Geddy Lee singing this (a few octaves higher of course)... LOL. Of course we all like to make comparisons but you've got your own thing happening for sure.
Great song man!

Psych!
Helluva fine racket you make here, Mike, and kudos on Andy's skins. Initial melody verse lines seem to echo Gypsy Eyes, not coincidentally, Mr. Homage-maker. There's also a strong whiff of 60's pop-rock psychedelia here to my ears - more than James Gang, which seems to me to have more subdued tone on the axes. But I digress. The wah-wah break leading into the solo works great for me.

Hey Bob...
The James Gang reference applies strictly to the somewhat funky rhythmic mid-section. The tone I went for was entirely Hendrix. Any similarity to "Gypsy Eyes" is actually accidental, as I was thinking about the Band Of Gypsies album the whole time.

I just can't help doing homages. It's all pretty much been done before, and I believe in giving credit where credit is due.

"Helluva fine racket" is a wonderful compliment my friend. Many thanks!
