Saint Savior (you could have been a star)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I've known or have come across a lot of people you are very talented and could have ben a start. I think we or most of us tend to get to that comfy level and are pretty satisfied with our lives. Saint Savior is possibly that unseen identity that pushes people beyond if they can hear him. Or maybe it's just good luck. But I think everyone is a star in there own right.

double tracked the vocals so no effect there. One guitar track that weaves in and out that is kind of cool is tremolo picking chord inversions high up on the neck. Using the neck pickup with the tone way down. No effect used, but it does sound cool. Plus a lot of slide guitar stuff.

Lyrics
Saint Savior (you could have been a star)

you could have been a star
but you chose not to shine
the fame would tear you apart
in your world everything is fine
you could have been a star

saint savior tries and tries
to make everyone a star
saint savior tries and tries
in our world everything is fine

far from the sight of eyes
there lies a private life
secluded from the world outside
in your world everything is fine
you could have been a star

saint savior tries and tries
to make everyone a star
saint savior tries and tries
in our world everything is fine

you could have been a star
but you didn't have the time
your world is everything
in your world everything is fine
you could have been a star

saint savior tries and tries
to make everyone a star
saint savior tries and tries
in our world everything is fine
saint savior tries and tries
to make everyone a star
saint savior tries and tries

you're a hit making machine. love that slide. like the doubled vocals. did you try that ADT plug in yet, you will like. anyways, i have just realized that I type while listening and as a result I tend to ramble. whta is up with taht awesome tone on your solo? how'd you do that? really sweet tune Vic. I need to get one of those Epi Dots.

Thanks Michael
I did try the ADT plug in which sounds really cool. I did try it on here but I found that it making out the words a bit hard in a mix with a lot of stuff going on. So, i decided to go the old school way. I have the music done for another song that sounds like it's from Rubber Soul or Beatles '65 I will try it on that one and see what happens.

The solo is a slide (of course) it was a first pass. I recorded it to check levels but it turned out alright enough to keep. I also ran it through a setting on my GNX2 pedal board, a setting of delay and reverb plus a octave down pitch shift. It's not to noticible in the mix but it does seem to carry some ooomph.

Cool
Interesting guitar sounds. Until I read your explanation I wasn't quite sure what the background sounds were.

I know that there plenty of people who go for the bass sound that you're using here, but I'm not one of them. To me the bass has too much midrange, and that's where all the information from the guitars and vocals already is. Matter of taste.

more guitar trickery.

matter of taste is always good. even though there is the mid range. there is still a lot of bottom end. at least on my monitors. thanks for the listen and input.

Psychedelic minor muse...

working in this song, Vic. Really quite an atmospheric story-song adorned with the expected and requisite unique guitar tracks that I have come to (redundantly) expect. A well-woven song and I like the double vocal... very sixties-sort-of-Beatles-thing in my ear. As michael2 wrote, "you're a hit making machine." I like the theme of the lyrics.
I never met Saint Savior... but 'I coulda been a contenda....'

Keep it up... I think you will. ;-)

cheers

one of those bits and pieces approach for a lot of this one. I had the music done several weeks ago. But getting ideas for lyrics seems to take longer and longer, this was a 3rd rewrite. The first one was a bout a reluctant would be star. ala syd barret of pink floyd but i had already done something along that line some time back.

you are a star from where i stand

Wonderment

Reminiscent of Harrison. I like it. I especially appreciate the storyline. On my mind all the time. Who is destined to advance beyond mediocrity? If I'm not mistaken, the Fisher Space Pen Club extolled mediocrity as a virtue. Not sure. That was back on campus at SJU in the early 1970s. I never did join that club which met at Stella Maris Chapel across Lake Sagatagan, at the end of the trail. It was at that time I began to play harmonica and nylon string 3/4 size guitar in the handball courts, conjuring up songs of love and wonderment.

Vic, a really good song.
Vic Holman said 2911 days ago (July 8th, 2009)
Thanks Richard
you know the old line, "I'ld never join a club that would have me as a member".

Early 70's was when I was starting out to play guitar and would jam with other friends and thinking of the big time. And here we are years later being designers. at least it's still art and we are paid for it.

A semi hollow body electric is a must. the tonal range goes a long way to fit any music form. Bigger body though.

The lyrics and the song
itself are solid, like the writing. The way you put it togeather just adds to what is good. You'r tricks with the recording and the slide fits right in. Did you use the Dot for the slide work or the SG? Good stuff, thanks.

I used the SG for slide in the verse parts. The solo i did later where i used the DOT. That was mostly because it was the closest electric to plug in.

Thanks for the listen Russ

so you want to be a star
the cool thing about your tunes is that they require a thorough listen - they don't let the listener off easy - there's so much going on, so many layers of sound, that you've got to hit rewind a few times which made me realize a second cool thing about your tunes, specifically your guitar playing, and that's how creative it is, how many different kinds of sounds you try to get out of it in non traditional ways, and i dig that too. Here I especially like the acoustic, and the way it blends into the electric, as if it's all coming from one guitar. very cool.

instant reply
this is one of those that each part approaches the song from a different angle. except the chorus which is simple and serves as a breather for the ears. I grew up on a lot of music that you would find some things on multiple listens. the song on working on now is so simple and direct it will sound like the odd man out.

Lennon714 said 2911 days ago (July 8th, 2009)
Everything is fine
I really dig when you sing that line in the sneary, low tone. I'm not sure I believe you that everything IS fine. Perhaps that's due to an argument my wife had about Lennon writing "I Feel Fine". I mentioned how it wa a rare positive tone for him, then she served me with how nobody is fine when they say they are. BUT maybe you do mean that everything is fine. Wow. Now that's rambling.

The theme of this song is really unique and an interesting little commentary. What is it that makes some us us push hard, while others are content?

It's all good
just the word "fine" seems to get a lot of people in trouble. Don't know why but it can.

I'm more low key myself. But, i guess there is more to it then some people having a "A" personality, That's how I came with the saint savior name. Thanks Eric

Different, but has the Vic sound
You don't have to make excuses for the vocals. Whatever sounds right, sounds right. I like you voice with or without effects.
The song should be on your "Best of" album if you ever decide to do one. Just an excellent song in all areas.

If you ended up as a planet, then it would have to be Jupiter.

I usually double the vocals most of the time. sometimes the second voice is farther down in the mix. About the only effect i ever have used is just reverb outside of compression and some EQ.

Pretty psychedelic...
and psychedelically pretty.

You have found the perfect tone on that opening guitar riff, and I really like where you're going with your vocals of late Vic. Taking more chances, and it's paying off rather well.

Generous lyric concept too. All in all, a fine piece of work.

Be well my friend!

gas nebula, that's funny.

I had the whole thing worked on on acoustic. after i laid that down i started thinking of having everything else play off it in a different way.

i approach everything as a hobby, even work (as much as i can) seems simpler and easier going that way. and naps are nice!

now on to a simple tune

great song
I should have heeded the promptings of Saint Savior. I could have been a star? Damn. Love your slide work here. Someone else mentioned the Harrison thing. I hear that, but the lyrics and theme remind me a bit of Bowie. Either way, it's a winner.

I'm glad to see the MJ physicists weighing on the star puns. Well played!

we are all stars
and day dream believers.

My slide hero is Harrison so there is that.

Originally i was going to do or did try to do the deeper bowie vocal style with different lyrics. But I couldn't quite get a smooth rise over the middle of the chord changes. so a different route.

i recorded the music 3 or 4 weeks ago. i would spend maybe 20 minutes each evening on the mix. i dropped two addition guitar tracks and started laying an axe to other parts. I was debating on using the slide or a ebow instead. after playing the slide part, I thought well that works. the slide on the solo was by chance, i was intending to do something different. i originally did it for fun, but it turned out nice. good thing that i actually had the record button since i was doing a level check.

Great story. The guitar and synths are very strong, as your vocals per usual. This song has a lot of theater in it, Bowie comes to mind, not that it sounds like him, but conceptually. Great mix and production. Love your voice, it's different or unique whatever metaphor you wish to use! Thank you!

star
Cool song as usual. Something about the style is again very Beatlesesque though much more modern. Also, not just because of the name, I am reminded of a song by Cracker called "Star" (gonna make you a star). The kind of subject matter that I find rings true and is a little sad about the world. What is a star anyway?

seeing stars
the media tells us who a star is. although i don't buy into. seems to be by being a big star. way to much work needs to go into it.

funny you mentioned Cracker, they played not to far from my town a week ago. One of my co-workers went and saw them.

The way you speak to my conscience with lyrics and toy with keys to enter introspective subplots reminds me a lot of DC Talk. It's rather psychedelic and disturbing.
