Description
It is funny how some songs get started. The genesis for this piece of "art rock" came from listening to Asian visitors pronounce the three-syllable word "Chi-na-town" as a two syllable construction. And since they went there every day of their vacation, that became the song's conceit. I have been trying to work in more natural recorded sounds into my songs, but the inclusion of a cricket and grasshopper chorus in the ending section here still has me wondering if it is effective.

Lyrics
CHINATOWN (2009)
Somewhere down in Chinatown
that's where my heart belongs
where tigers and dragons abound
when you see Mrs Fong
tell her I won't be long
going down to Chinatown
where I belong
cheap sunglasses knockoff purses
tattoo parlors street vendor curses
going down to Chinatown
where I belong
I'm ready to walk the walk
talk the talk
get some fat Buddha luck
and Beijing the duck
going down going down to Chinatown
she is always waiting there
with iPod ears and rat black hair
sometimes it feels unreal
an enigmatic riddle in a fortune cookie
it's right there lookie-lookie
even though sometimes I lose my way
in her vicinity
I felt an affinity
going down to Chinatown where I belong
here's my conclusion
I was lost in a delusion
going down going down to Chinatown
this is my confession
I need an intercession
can't stop going down to Chinatown where I belong
as she was standing next to me
I experienced an epiphany
going down going down going down to Chinatown
people walking everywhere
a constant buzz filling the air
sometime I wonder if it's real
she is always teasing me
intriguing me with her mystery
why else would I keep going back
to Chinatown?
