Description
This song is vaguely about sex, but it's not explicit. I was coming home from work the other night around 10:30 and when I got to my street, I couldn't drive to my house. WHY? Because some gangbanger was running around with a gun and they had my street blocked off. I really just wanted to go inside and get a snack, but since that option wasn't available, I decided to try and teach myself how to write drum parts on the piano roll. Thank goodness for laptops. I sat on the curb with the helicopters, riot squad and police dogs around me and did the drum part for a couple of hours. spent way more time on the drums than the rest, as just as I was getting into recording the next day, my wife called to tell me her friend was on the way. aaaargh. anyways, this is trashy, loud, fast , fuzzy and sloppy (and a 2.5 minute pop song). felt good to play these guitars.

I deleted the last version and just added more high end to the bass and drums which were pretty muddy sounding. Sounds a little better. Sloparts and Bryn gave some helpful advice (although really it's supposed to sound pretty trashy). Thanks guys.

Lyrics
she locks the door
when i'm not there
she locks the door
so i feel safe

she hides the key
where no one looks
she hides the key
when i'm not there

ball inside
ball inside
ball inside
when we're at home

she makes me feel like i'm a man
she makes me feel like no one else

ball inside
ball inside
ball inside
when we're at home

etc....

hey bryn
thanks. I looked at the EQ and the rhythm section was all in the 180-200 Hz range. added a little mids to the drums and took off some of the bass at 200. do you know if there is a way in Logic to look at all of your tracks at once to get an idea of where everything is sitting in the mix EQ wise. how do you deal with that on your mega projects? do you write things down? tips always looking for tips (although a pat on the back is always nice too).

Oh yeah, now you got it goin' Mike
This is a much better mix, with better definition between the instruments. Vocal sits better in the Mix too.

You done good on the remix Michael

thanks for the tips. i always forget to check where the EQ is (laziness). i really am trying to make a point to get more conscientious about the that stuff; after all, I do have all of the necessary equipment. got nothing but time, so hopefully the sonic experimentation will bear some fruit eventually.

Fascinating song
but the environment in which you seem to do it (them) is almost more fascinating. Just imagining to start to make a song like this in these circumstances... It would not be me... Take care!

you know
i can pretty much make time for music anywhere. i always have my computer with me (just in case i get a few minutes). it was actually good as it made the night less stressful. if i had waited, I probably would have gotten lazy and used a drum loop. thanks for listening.

thanks for the listen. the last mix was really baad. this is close enough for comfort. as for the neighborhood, i try and stay on the positive since i can't afford a house anywhere else in LA (that's not worse). it is really pretty here though. thanks again.

Wonderful
I didn't get to hear the first, but this one is a ball buster for sure. No worries on the sound. It sounds fantastic AND trashy. Like a great, raw band that got picked up. The energy remains legits and the audiophiles can stop bitchin' about the records the band puts out.

yes
thanks for the comments and the listen. some stuff about this drives me crazy, and i think it can only be done right with a bunch of actual humans, but what are you gonna do? i had some fun and that's all that counts. thanks again. now onto yours.

I love this
sounds like The Pixies kicking Bay City Roller's butt at a Cheap Trick concert. Sorry for all the easy pot shots - couldn't help myself. True is the drums are awesome the bass is fantastic and the siren guitar is perfect for the subject and situation you were in. Then the vocals so good. Sorry to hear about the street hassle - but you got some cool work done as a result - sitting on the curb. New genre - gutter punk.

i totally thought the same thing when it was done. except in my version it was "what a frikkin pixies rip-off; except for the bridge: what a cheap trick rip-off." ahh, who cares, just having fun with noise. backups are bugging a bit, but maybe some other time. thanks so much for the listen. i have a feeling this would sound much better live.

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
This is great Michael! Good to hear you back in the saddle again man.

Nice punk feel with wonderfully Beatle-esque singing. I DIG this. It made me smile from ear to ear throughout...I kept wanting to clap during the refrain! Ha ha...

Keep em coming bro!

Be well!

i will
make a confession. originally there was a shouted 1-2-3-4 intro, handclaps on the chorus, and a gang vocal yelling "hey hey hey hey." i would have left it in if the "hey's" were done by 3 or 4 drunk girls. sounded dumb with my oh so manly voice. thanks for the listen.

dirty
yeah man. love to hear you let loose and break out the in-your-face guitars again. I really like the trashiness of the verses juxtaposed with the poppy chorus. reminds me a lot of the pixies and breeders. crazy stuff going on in your neighborhood, huh? here too. a couple weeks ago a guy got shot 3 times in my driveway (literally). Luckily my kids slept through it, but freaky nonetheless. we considered moving, but no neighborhoods are 'safe' around here these days

dude, glad that crap didn't get further than your driveway. i hate thugs. thanks for the listen man. yeah this was fun for me, haven't had a chance to plug the guitars in for awhile. males me want to do another rock tune. and yes: total pixies rip-off (without the cool time changes).

well i was coming home from work and...
you sure that story isn't just a 5X lyric?

you and rsorenson, you guys need to move to the country. the only thing that dies in my driveway is the occasional squirrel.

anyway dude loud, fast, trashy, fuzzy, and sloppy sounds as good as quiet, slow, classy, clear and precise when you're behind the wheel. great kick ass tune, can't wait to hear it in the truck. thanks for the good time DL.

maybe
i need to make a "drunk chicks rocking" virtual instrument. the queens of the stone age use it to great effect on the rated R record.

i would actually love to move out in the middle of nowhere, but no jobs for the wife or I. she designs album covers for a huge label. not much of that outside of the big city. thanks a bunch for rocking with me.

Fuzzy..
...scuzzy rocker. Love it! The drums are great, the guitar is delightfully sleazy and the "baa baa"'s are pop-rock perfection.

Great drum programming...seeing as you did it on the piano roll.
I have enough trouble trying to do it with a keyboard.
Anyway, great, cool track.
Like it a lot
I'm sure I used to have one of those rat pedals a long time ago.

drum programming is my problem area for sure, so trying really hard to step it up. and as for the Rat pedal, they are indispensable. up there with the classics. live my distortion array always includes the DOD classic fuzz (the orange one), the rat, and a big muff. thanks for listening.

nifty
sounds cool. an interesting story. there was some guy with a machine gun shooting couple blocks from my house when i was in middle school. was shooting towards the freeway randomly and such they had to put my school on lockdown. actually i think that happened again in 10th grade cuz some person killed a guy at 7-11. like how the vocals sound.

Love the energy of it all and great song writing and vocal. Didn't hear the first mix but this sounds just perfect to me. Superb.

Superb!
Great backstory to this song! Sorry to hear about the gang-banger running loose in your hood. Great drums for piano roll writing. I love that this has a sweet garageband sound to it. Feedback squelches at the end just make it that much better. Top notch! Is that your Rat in the pic?
