The Windswept Plain

Description
This piece is backdrop to the story/video of snow men marching across a windswept Antarctic plain.

It's a more Classical Ambient piece. More down to earth than my previous 30 or so pieces. I hope it adds contrast to what came before.

There is a drone element, but I reason that this just adds tension to the mix. I may try a mix without the drone and more conventional instruments, but that will be for another day.

As always, your thoughts would be welcome.

I agree
The drone gives it tension but more-so do the discordant strings. The track would be much emptier without the drone in which case you would probably need to 'see' the picture to give the same sense of suspense.

Thanks for sharing!.

Hi Andrew......
I'm a recent convert to drones, and I'm fighting to move away from them but some Ambient music works better with them, unfortunately, and I too thought that the drone added tension. I'm happy I thought correctly on this.

I'm probably back up in space with my next one though!!

Take care.

marching snowmen
I really like the drone. I think it fills the piece out, gives it some extra layers. there is a cool contrast between the accented strings and the droning synths, like a steady wind blowing and the snowmen fighting with each step to move forward through the white flurry. A very cool piece...definitely back to your more classic ambient sound. Very well done.

Hi Kassia.....
Thanks for stopping by. This is a slight tangent to what I normally do but hey, if the itch becomes persistant, you have to scratch it.

I'm happy that you got something out of this piece. It always gives me a thrill when someone sees/hears/feels something from one of my pieces. It allows me to rest easy at night.

You latest piece is something really, really special. I heard it earlier and loved every second. The story so fits the mood and ambience of the piece.

Take care.

Nice angular sounds
I like the drone... they have locating force and a certain suction on the sounds around. Done well here!

Hi Daniel......
The way that I'm putting the mixes together at the moment means that drones are going to be around and often. I'm working on 'evolving' drones but a retrigger means that the sound starts again and gives the impression of always being on. It's my latest musical challenge!! Ha ha.

Take care.

I enjoy creating music using computers and 'synthesized' as opposed to 'real' instruments. I have no problem using samples/loops in my music. Everyone does this every time they work with a track. I don't fit in any box and thoroughly enjoy working ou... [see more]
