Description
This is more Indie folk, but only because it's not as well done as real folk. Not that indie means "poorly done"... whatever...

I used to play acoustic sets every Sunday night a this place in Tempe. Since nobody goes to bars on Sunday nights, my sister and her husband came to watch me one night. My sets were 3 hours long so I had to throw everything in there. My sister HATED this song. She thinks it's whiny and stupid and that I should never play it again. I started cracking up. I guess you'd have to understand my family.

We were poor growing up (who wasn't?) so she thought it was autobiographical, but it really isn't. I was just remembering that the cool kids were the kids that wore Guess shirts and Z. Cavaricci shorts and poor kids didn't... and apparently that was all that mattered. Anyway, she hates it so I recorded it and I'm giving it to her tomorrow so she can make it her ringback or something.

Lyrics
Rich kids wear fancy clothes
So the other kids know
That their dads have good jobs
Poor kids wear ragged clothes
So the other kids know
That their dads don't have jobs

Rich kids and poor kids can never coexist
It's a cold, hard fact of life
It cannot be denied

Poor kids walking back home
Find themselves alone
With empty stomachs
Rich kids get rides back home
From stay at home moms
With after school snacks

chorus

so good
really glad you recorded this. your vocals and production sound really good. totally get what you're going for genre-wise (intentionally or not) and I like. The chorus is as catchy as a cold sore and I'm already singing them after the first listen. Great song eric. Your sister's crazy.

I got songs like herpes
In her defense, she wasn't judging it like we'd judge a song here. She thought I was whining about how our family ate government cheese and we never went on vacations, etc. Plus it's not Lady GaGA she she isn't as interested. I'm glad you are, though.

whatever
short, sweet and clever. and a fantastic chorus dude. has a cool kimya dawson feel.

i was a poor kid too. my daughter isn't. which leads to a lot of boring myself and my kid with "i never got to _____ (insert verb here) when i was a kid you should appreciate it blah blah blah" type of comments. When i catch myself doing that I could just punch myself in the nose.

Poor kids of the world, UNITE!
My buddy and I used to drive around listening to those Moldy Peaches cd's. I do need to pick up her collab with TMBG (our second TMBG reference).

My wife and I both grew up poor and while we're not rich now, we can afford the essentials. My daughter starts kindergarten next week and I'm FREAKING out. Growing up homely and poor gives you thick skin and generally makes you AWESOME. However, I don't want my daughter to get made fun of at all. I should be cool about it. Some kid somewhere at some time is going to make fun of her for something. I desperately want her to be a sheltered kid, but I desperately don't. Am I even making sense?

sense
you make perfect sense dude i felt the same thing. my response to things that scare me is to try to beat them up (not always a winning approach) so when my kid turned 2 i closed my eyes and put her up on a horse. She's been riding ever since and though watching her fall off occasionally scares me its given her tons of confidence and grit. i know that whatever comes her way in life she'll go out fighting, if it comes to that. which makes me a little less scared for her. so there you go - find a dangerous sport and throw her into it. maybe hang gliding? that's all the "good parent" advice i've got for today lol...

I didn't get to
see any rich kids when I was growing up, we were all the same. You are right we could not have coexisted - would have been a fight a minute.
Just shows how your lyrics got me thinking, really enjoyed the song. Reminded me a lot of The Beatles, spot on guitar, vocal and production.
Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

With time as a guide, I believe most the kids weren't rich, but had parents that put a premium on things like popularity, nice clothes, and the basic image of wealth. I don't think we had any legitimate rich kids in my neighborhood either. Thanks for the listen. I'm honored to have you DL it!

Great song - I'll beat up your sister if you want
Really well performed - slightly snotty - not snooty - which makes all the difference.

Forget them, Vic. I'd much rather rock out in your '55 Belvedere. Leave the Triumphs for the Loverboy fans.

Rich
I was born lower middle class and I still harbor a little class resentment. I dig your indie folk-rock stylings here. Short and sweet with a point of view and a hooky chorus. Works for me.
Tell your sister to get a clue.

I emailed her the MP3 and she said she didn't even open it. We were playing cards last night and she was singing Lionel Richie's "Dancing on the Ceiling". So I'm comfortable with not being in her iPod.

I heard Ray Davies was kicked out of his house as a teen for getting caught in bed with two girls by his mom. Since I've never done any of that, I thought I'd just listen to Kinks records. Thanks for listening!

simply cool, indie folk pop.
The "It's a cold, hard fact of life

Good call
I used to listen the EP (or maybe it was a single) with their cover of Mrs. Robinson on it. There's that song "Being Around" that I absolutely love. Any love song with a quandry about what to do with a booger is genius in my book.
