Into The Tunnel

Description
I've been re-reading one of my favorite books, The Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies, and in the second tale of the trilogy the main character goes through a rebirth of sorts. This rebirth is catalyzed by a terrifying and thought-provoking journey through a pitch black tunnel deep within a cave. When David finally comes out at the end of the tunnel he is awestruck by a huge cavern of natural beauty and a primitive people's sanctuary. But it is not the wonder of the glittering shrine that brings about his rebirth - it is his slow crawl through the darkness, enveloped by warm earth and musty air, alert to every sound no matter how unfamiliar, and forced to go deep within himself to find the strength and courage to continue forward.

There is nothing frightening about the darkness. We all have Shadows within and around us. It is a powerful journey to take, into the tunnel, where we can mindfully and compassionately confront these Shadows, get to know them, and come out the other end into a beautiful place filled with new knowledge of ourselves.

This song was originally intended to be a meditational piece...and I suppose in many ways it still is. I recommend headphones and a quiet space. Let this resonate deep within you.

*******

I have used as my main instrument here the Hang Drum. A few weeks ago futzpucker sent me a link to a Youtube video. I watched it, spellbound by this instrument I had never seen or heard of before. I searched for anything I could find about hang drums and will put some links here for you if you are interested. I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase EastWest's Stormdrum2 a little while ago and was ecstatic to discover that there is a Hang Drum sample!! So, I've been playing and experimenting and this is what came of it. Enjoy.

Here is a great blog with lots of good info about hang drums: http://www.hangblog.org/2006/11/27/how-to-buy-a-hang/

And here are a couple Youtube videos. I didn't want to embed videos that aren't my own on this song page, so I'm just going to put up the links:

There seems to be nowhere you can't go, beautifully
No matter the environment and topography, flora or fauna that you decide to travel through, there appears to be nothing through which you can't lead your listeners, with the eye of your ear, to find beauty in your musical creation.

Down...
...and through a dark hole. You've made good use of your new toys, Shay. Your description in words comes true in your musical inventiveness. This is awesome. Hang that drum!!! You put it to great use here and have served up quite an evocative composition full of suspense and mystery. Beautifully conceived; beautifully recorded. Wow.
Peace.

Hi Shay
Very original, cinematic, meditational. I like the background synth providing the chordal fabric here. Your most mystical piece that I have heard to date. Keep going in this direction my friend - it is a fascinating soundscape and I think it is your calling. Very cool music - great job and thanks for sharing this with us.

I love the
clean sound of everything... Each unique sound has just great depth and clarity... It allows you to enjoy each neat little device as if you had it right in front of you.

You are truly gifted and as Kate says... there seems to be nowhere you cannot go, beautifully...

Those words should be a song lyric Kate! They describe certain people in this world with amazing accuracy... Shay being at the front of the list.

Me however... there seems to be nowhere I can't go without trashing the place! :-) Just kidding... But when I hear works like this my rockers seem so crude... kinda like I'm banging on the pans from the kitchen or something...

aaahhh ooooo ooo oooo eeee eeee eeek (scratches under arms then swings from the kitchen lamp)

Love this Shay!

This resonates deep, my friend. Hearing this brings to mind that music is a journey and along the way we pick up our treasures as we strive for excellence.. or not. your story of the hang drum is just another wonderful piece of your prose. Venturing into any kind instrument and learning what it has to offer in the way of it revealing its origins is a journey unto itself. Yes, you must acquire one... and keep making music. Lovely and classic Kassia!

I'm so thrilled that this resonated with you. These sorts of pieces are much more therapeutic for me to write than the orchestral stuff and therefore a little closer to my heart and soul. Hey! What a treat to see you here! And what a wonderful comment - you just made MY day. I tried to use many different textures, since the hang drum is pretty limited in tone and range. I wanted to give the piece a depth in other ways. Your adjectives are great and exactly the sorts of feelings I was going for. Thank you!

No Freudian allusions
from me, but there is something about tunnels. This is a masterpiece. I'm so glad to read that you plan to continue with this style. I have always thought that it is much more ... what ... a tunnel to our primal nature than any orchestral music, which always reminds me of tuxedos and gowns and champagne. On the other hand, I'm a musical dolt. This is the best sounding piece of music that I've come across in some time. And I appreciate the thoughtful description that you've provided.

Bravo!
It's instantly captivating, and I only wish it had gone on longer… it's kind of trance inducing, or at least calming, and that kind of music can go on for a really long time without outstaying its welcome. Bravo for this, and I hope you continue in this vein!

I loved the Deptford trilogy, which I consider his masterworks, but I also enjoyed the Salterton and Cornish trilogies… he was sure fond of doing things in threes!

Hi Shay.....
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.....I so love where you're coming from wiht this piece. I have to listen to the mix a few more dozen times to really, really appreciate the work you have put into this.

Here is another literary tangent to follow....to see where it leads me. Thanks for the heads up.

All that musical tuition is paying off. Don't ever think that it may have been time wasted. You can bring some of the teaching back, for this or that track, and every one will love you for it.

Take care.

Provocative piece
Haven't read the Davies... but did read Dead Man in Deptford by Anthony Burgess... which gives me different visuals on this piece. I really like this Shay. I like the rhythmic variation... the contrapuntal treatment across the stereo field. Very subtle - but masterfully done. Excellent work!

love this! really nice sounds!

Thanks for the download. One thing that would be really great is if you could put the tags for the song in the song file in iTunes so that when it pops up in my player I know who and what it is. It comes up as hang9 with no artist name in iTunes. Easy enough for me to add your name and the correct title, but if you are going to allow downloads it would be really helpful to have that information already there... just a thought, no big deal...

Beautiful
Love the way the music develops and builds. I would love to own a Hang Drum, they sound great and you have certainly done it justice. The little tease of a chinese violin reaaly worked. Great piece Shay, well enjoyed.

how great to see you here! took me quite awhile to get the Chinese Erhu to a point where I really was happy with it, so I'm really glad to hear that it worked for you. I LOVE the hang drum! I think I'm obsessed.

Dropped jaw.
I played this twice all the way through, on the second listen i downloaded it and it started to play in the background with a 10 to 15 second gap, you should try that out.... Breath taking, Zen like magical ride. Reminded me of when i lived in Japan. 2.50, What is that eastern instrument? and is that you playing it? One of the best pieces of music i have heard here. Outstanding.

what a great comment! i tried what you suggested and it was very cool. i put my screen visualizer on as well and zoned out to the sounds and colors swirling. The eastern instrument is the Chinese Erhu, a stringed instrument and it's from the Apple World instruments Jam Pack. I worked pretty hard on those few notes to make them sound authentic. I'm blown away by your wonderful words here. Thank you!

Fantastic mix, Shay
I had a chance to play the Hang a few times.
It's indeed a wonderful instrument
with its own unique tone.

I get the hang of it
I think I've already regaled you about my love of the Hang drum. My first exposure was when I saw one played by a favorite artist of mine (yours too, I think): Imogen Heap.

The most striking part about this song is the spaciousness you've achieved. It's almost as if there's not only a left-to-right stereo spread, but a front-to-back as well (which I know to be impossible from my cheesy stereo headphones here at work). There are a lot of percussive effects that seem to be happening somewhere behind my head. I could learn a lot from you on using the available sonic space.

The chosen sounds are very complimentary - the hang works well with the off-the-beaten-track percussion and the erhu. Even the "glitchtastic" bits work well, since they are not overapplied.

Even though the minor key and dynamic shifts maintain an underlying level of tension, the song still manages to be super-therapeutic, introspective and somehow relaxing. Thanks for taking us all on the journey.

favorite track
Your piano music is wonderful, but I can't help but rooting for a sound I haven't heard before as I also like to be surprised. And what an achievement to successfully create a completely original soundscape with this almost inquisitive, meditative quality and sense of wonder which I so appreciate in music. Like a spontaneously intense reflection on the Unknown. Very inspiring.

Nice rhythm!
It's a sign of professionalism when ambient music gets infused with a simple, enrapturing rhythm. Most pieces in this genre become deadpan because the composers find it sufficient to let a bunch of long pads with blips intermingled constitute the song. Your ambience was the former – inventive. I enjoyed it all the way through. The big drum was a picturesque decision.

Some of the "blips," mostly near the beginning, seemed whacky and distracting. Maybe they'd make more sense to me if I could see the tunnel scene itself.

Thanks for this experience!
