Description
Well.... here is yet another version of this song. IF I were able to put this band together I would be honored to play with the following:
Neil Porter (Jiguma) on bass http://www.macjams.com/artist/jiguma
John Kaplan (Kappy) on banjo http://www.macjams.com/artist/kappy
Vern Sinclair (first recording ever) on acoustic guitar (Vern_S) http://www.macjams.com/artist/Vern_S
Michael House (mvh9591) on synth and keys http://www.macjams.com/artist/mvh9591
Chris Cihon on lead guitar (PickQuickRecords) http://www.macjams.com/artist/PickQuickRecords
A special shout out to Brian aka Elevator_Funk http://www.macjams.com/artist/Elevator_Funk for getting me to consider trying a collaboration.

I have been sitting on this for quite some time. Neil agreed to help me out shortly after the last version was uploaded, and with a proper bass line this song is much more professional sounding. I also redid the drums with Addictive drums (with some direction from Neil) and modified the arrangement. I have all the instrument recordings that were sent to me for a total of 8 separate instruments not including the vocals. It is the biggest file I have produced to date. I know it seems somewhat obsessive to have this many versions of the song lol, so I'll tell you what this song means to me. It represents the time I decided I was a songwriter 20 years ago I was told by a very successful country artist who is now quite famous, that it was "a very strong song" she wasn't yanking my chain either, I had played a couple more for her and she didn't like them at all and told me why she didn't like them. This version represents everything I have learned here from all you great people who had the courage to tell me what you think, good bad or indifferent. The direction and advice I have been given here amounts to a complete education in recording music. I thank you all.
Peace
Guy

PS there is one more version coming and before the groaning and eye rolling starts it's an unplugged version with a very special guest whom we all miss very much around here.

We live and we learn
at least you have Guy. This is so professional sounding now, a great improvement over the last version I heard. Don't get me wrong, that last version was excellent in it's own right.

I will say this (the deaf guy speaks), I could hear the lyrics in the vocal better on the last version, but that may be more due to my ears than the mix..

This is a wonderful song Guy, thanks for taking time to get it right.

Be well my friend,

Ed

Gold, pure gold...
This sounds perfectly produced... quality and all the right elements sitting comfortably in the mix. Your vocal is smooth as butter singing solid lyrics... great hook. Just some great music in this tune. I am impressed and glad I stopped in. Dang good.

I heard one other version of this very cool song. I hear Gordon Lightfoot in this--one of my faves. Some fine production & lots of cool arrangement moments, but it's the vocals, melody and lyrics that make it work for me. Look forward to the unplugged version.

Outstanding. Vocals are smoothe as silk, and the banjo lingering in the background makeing it's own statement. The over all production rings true in my ears. And I am excited about another version, this is just a real solid song.

another great version .....
sounds fantastic Guy and your new group! Loved it! Just a couple stumbles (not sure how to describe it) on the drum spots, one after the first "left to hide" and one on the part before the last "telephone is ringin" and just a little off timing on the vocal line of the first "five lonely days to pass" and would say a fav and radio ready!! Look forward to your next one as well....

stunning in many ways
I've somehow missed all the prior versions of this... what an incredible collaboration you have assembled, everyone sounds great here (tricky to mix all this, and you've done masterfully.) The songwriting is beautifully smooth, singing is great, all the musicians here are sweet. As always, if I may offer one suggestion, this song is cranking along at a nice clip, and then it suddenly ends... that last chord seems like it should be held another couple of seconds before fading, maybe with a final cresc/decresc. at the very end. Excellent work, as always. Wow... such fun ornamentation by various folks all the way through, without detracting from the singing, but enhancing it.
ttfn,
Drakonis

... I love the way this builds up, with the each instrument sneaking in at the back like a freshman late for Music 101. Stellar recording Guy, more than a "strong song" as I've said before. This is up there with "Mountain Girl" (Blue Mountain) or "I Wish My Baby Was Born" (Uncle Tupelo).

I have to admit I'd forgotten about this One :)

Even on the cruddy speakers I'm using at the moment, this sounds great. This sounds like it could hit the country charts and be quite successful. A few tiny timing things on the drums (maybe - because I can't hear well enough to be totally certain), but overall it sounds terrific.

I especially love the harmonies and lead guitar work - both very pro indeed. John's banjo really works for me also.

Cheers from Switzerland!

Song is still great man, and getting better. It really captures the feel of some of the 60's rock in a way that is super tangible. The country influence is apparent also, which is not a bad thing at all, it comes out as a nice color here.

fight fight fight!
My weigh-in is that I like the vocals alone for awhile. It puts it in a nice notch very much like "Gentle On My Mind". Bringing drums in *could* spoil that affect. Just consider both. Maybe try it both ways and see what you (and Mark) think.

Beautiful.
Yes, It is a very strong song. And I believe it is because of the lyrics and the mood they create. You are just trying to get close to the song you hear in your head with your mind's ear. It is like that with painting, too. Just can't seem to catch the artwork the way you see it in your mind's eye.
Here's to "The One" being all you want it to be. And a round of drinks for your band. Thanks.

All you need is (to) love (this tune)
Forgive me for not having - making - time to co do the version comparisons. Pro performances and mix. If I were to get critical I might turn the keys down a touch to play-up the picking. And/or maybe boost the mid/hi range on the pickers by a couple of db.

But I love it, love it, love it. If radio weren't dying a slow death I'd expect this to be part of a resurgence of a kind of music I hereby dub "post-ironic pop/rock." It's coming back as far as I'm concerned. There's room in the world for music that's NOT self-referentially vain, music that's just sincere.
