Lyrics

The weather is cold for the time of year,
And the wind hasn’t stopped all day.
It’s slowed down the coming of summer, I fear,
It just blew it away.
I saw the young men in the centre of town,
Their faces scowling and their spirits down,
They needed someone who could not be found
To make them live again.

In coffee house windows the old eat cake;
They’ve seen bad times before.
Their own youth was squandered for freedom’s sake
On another great war.
Their conversation edged with bitterness,
Not realising they helped make this mess,
Their greed for more has only brought them less,
And they know who to blame.

Oh summer,
You’re hiding, but I know you’re near.
Oh summer,
Shine a little light down here,
Because I know they wouldn’t feel this way
If the sun could warm the people on the street today.
Oh summer,
Shine a little light down here.

I love this. A melody and changes rooted in trad folk, but then it takes very tasty & unexpected left turns. Your usual lovely vocals and guitar playing, and then that sax solo--wow! A nice lyric, too, that moves beyond the given to the metaphoric. This is a style all your own. Very impressed with this track, Ken.

I heard the producers of this recording disagreeing with each other about my song writing; one dismissed it as quirky. I much prefer your assessment, John, and am very grateful for your thoughtful response!

I was unusually relaxed on the first afternoon of a long series of recording sessions and when the sax player came in he did it in one take. It was a rare day and a pleasure to share the results!

The sax player's name is John Battrum; I met him on the day of the recording and haven't seen or heard of him since. All the parts of the song fitted snugly together. That's teamwork!

Thanks Feter!

Wow, Ken
I love this song, everything about it. it's interesting how the sax player showed up for it, then disappeared. Your voice and backing is perfect. Summer has been the same way over here this year.

Thank you Roxy!
I just looked him up on the internet- he's a busy man in great demand!
It says..
John Battrum, Alto Saxophone  -  Steel Pulse, Stevie Wonder, King Pleasure & the Biscuit Boys, the Foundations, Andy Fairweather-Lowe, Gary Booker, Ian Paice etc.

I was fortunate to meet him for long enough to have him play on one of my favourite own songs!
