You Talk Too Much

Description
The working title of this song was 'Number One' because I wanted to challenge myself to write and record the catchiest rock/pop song I've ever written, in hopes that it would top the imaginary charts in my imaginary rockstar world. Not sure if I succeeded but it sure was fun recording this.
I'm fairly certain I've ripped off a number of bands with these melodies and certainly the chord progression, so feel free to call me on it!

Lyrics
You remind me of a girl I knew
She was beautiful but not like you
She would talk to me for hours and hours
She just could not shut up

I don't talk much so it didn't go well
She dropped me for some other fellow
They talked current events and politics
I said "good riddance!"

You talk too much so I should keep away from you
You talk too much so I should keep away from you
I know it's wrong to judge you like I do
But you talk to much so I should keep away from you

It's been a few years since we quit each other
and taken me as long to find another
It turns you are exactly like she was
So I'll say good-bye :(

(sigh of relief)

You talk too much so I should keep away from you
You talk too much so I should keep away from you
I know it's wrong to judge you like I do
But you talk to much so I should keep away from you

thanks feter
I tried to keep things fairly simple. no reverb or effects this time and some screw ups intentionally left in. Gives it that 'band' feeling you mention

falsetto
Hey Rid,
The part I like most about this song is the falsetto, very Weezer, who like like a lot. Cool song. Sure to be a hit!

I don't care...
who you ripped off! This is just the tonic (for everything) I need right now. How do you manage to crank out these bits of genius so consistently and prolifically? "Bartender, I'll have what ever that guy is drinking!"

This is a MEGA-Hit Rid - you are soaring to the top of the charts. and if you're not, there's something truly wrong with the world. seriously - wow - what a fabulous piece of classic rock/pop!

yakkity yak
Touch of the cars in the keyboards and a touch of weezer in the construction but not enough to say 'what a rip off'
This stands up on it's own as a damn fine pop rock song.
I can even see bits of the imaginary video in my head

chatter
really like the chatter sample that's hilarious. yeah it owes a bit to weezer but weezer owes a bit to a lot of other bands. and it's tons of fun so who cares. great lyrics too man nothing better in a pop song than funny and true.

the old title cracks me up because when my wife and i are fighting we'll give each other the finger (behind the kids back) saying "you're number one, baby"...same stupid joke over and over never fails to get us laughing...

hey
thanks tempie. i thought of you a couple times while recording this - particularly when tracking the bg vox. i tried this whole tenor doo-wap thing but gave up in fear of totally humiliating myself. thanks for the listen and comments.

Your story reminds me of when I was a kid I went to a court case with my mom - she took me to watch these occasionally - probably in hopes I'd become a lawyer one day. Anyway, part of the guy's testimony was that the defendant 'gave him the finger' for what reason I can't remember. Afterwards I asked my mom what giving the finger meant and she said it meant 'one minute'. I accepted that as total fact and for years that's what I thought it meant. whenever I heard someone complaining that someone gave them the finger. I always thought 'what's so bad about that?'

Pop!
This bangs, but is the B-side to "Nobody Knows" :). I actually didn't get a heavy "rip-off" vibe at all. I know people are saying Weezer, but I only see that in the chord progression. And let's be honest with ourselves, we all have 10 songs with that progression. The keys are absolutely divine and the fuzz bass at the end puts a little muscle in the tune.

nobody knows
man you like that song haha. yeah I hear ya I have a few songs with this prog, as probably does every band that's ever made a buck. Thanks for the review. The 'bass' is actually the firebird with some superfuzz distortion, but I can hear why you think it's bass

I gambled
I wasn't sure about the bass, but went with the comment anyway. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. My terrible ear strikes again. Did you ever see that Pee Wee's Playhouse where he loves fuit salad so everyone is like "Why don't you marry it?" so he does? Yeah, I'd marry "Nobody Knows". Creepy? Sure. It's just a bad ass song.

Yeah...
... it is a little bit Weezer but it reminds me far more of Swedish legends Popsicle (particularly at the start). The guitar solo is brilliant in its simplicity (something I particularly like as my own playing is of the very simple variety).
Brilliant lyrics, especially the daring sigh in the final quarter. An all round terrific pop song.
This is the kind of thing that, on hearing on the radio, would send me scurrying to amazon to order the CD.
Love it.

this is great fun. not a rip off, just a tip of the hat. love the sound of this recording. raw sounding. falsetto is a really nice touch (wish i could do that). reminds me of the 90's "cuddle-core" movement from Olypia. great song, how did i miss this one?

nifty track
Well-crafted. Song structure is just right. I think you've accomplished your mission: a chart topper style song. I like how you shift the instrumentation as the verses and chorus go by. well-placed guitar riffs, nice accents.
top vocals. I like the quirky vocal phrasing. D/L ,on the ipod, going on vacation with me and the family. you're good, mister rs

Personally I like your "totally off the charts" music more - but I think you did a pretty swell job of writing a catchy pop song. I was hearing Fountains of Wayne in the beginning.

Good Song
Yes there is a Weezer connection in the song, and maybe a little They Might Be Giants. A good song none the less.

I remember another song called "You Talk Too Much," I think it was by Ernie Kaydo back in the 19 and 50's. Ask woofer3 he'll know.

Good job.
