Description
I heard this song by the Pilot and fell in love with it immediately. So much passion and simplicity. Of course I asked if I could try doing another version, and was happy to get "yes" as an answer. The original was electric guitar and vox, so I added a band and some ambient sounds. I took the original guitar, ran it through gleetchlab, dumped it back into Logic and then sliced it up some more and put a tape delay on it. Everything i played was first take, to try and keep a jam kind of feel to it. I did my backup vox with the pinhole mic as I was too lazy to set anything else up (i only sing for a second anyways).

The Pilot played this straight old skool (no metronome), and while it is amazing in his original, it made it difficult to do drums. so i just kind of tried to mic Keith Moon with the original Pavement drummer. It could be a little tighter, but maybe next time. I actually like the sloppy rhythm section. It reminds me of one of the early Pavement singles.

Hope you like. If you are not familiar with the Pilot, then check him out. here is the original:

Lyrics
We thought we had it all right.
We thought nothin could break us.
Then that one day turned to night
to show us what we're made of.

And I tried to fight for what we had,
but your thoughts and your dreams made me too sad.
And I tried, and I tried, and I tried so.
But I knew this was as far as you'd go.

Time doesn't make it alright.
I still remember your face.
I'm sorry you think we fight,
but I don't like you away.

And I tried to fight for what we had,
but your thoughts and your dreams made me too sad.
And I tried, and I tried, and I tried so,
but I knew this was as far as you'd go.

And I tried to fight for what we had,
but your thoughts and your ways made me too sad.
And I tried, and I tried, and I tried soooo,
but I knew this was as far as you'd go.

I loved seeing Pavement with Gary on drums
this goes there a bit for sure. What a great idea to mix it up with The Pilot. His stuff is really good and you two were made for each other. Nice additions Michael.

Nice work Michael
You did a hell of a job on the band my friend. The little bit of looseness makes it sound like a real band backup instead of studio add ons.

you got the knack Michael, Kudos

glad you approve. this kind of music is deep in my bones. the remix reminds me of a cross between pavement, sebadoh and the velvet underground at the end (3 bands that really moved me). the pilot is really a gifted songwriter. thanks for listening and I'm glad you "got" the looseness.

Great version
of a modern MJ classic. There are like 4 versions of this song and they're all great, and all different. The loose drumming is a plus for me. Like you're watching it live when the audience and the band is just exhausted but they're putting in one last effort. The room's heavy and the song makes people forget how weary they are. Big time, fellas. Great job!

very kind of you, love that description. i was in a band that did 3 hour shows (much of it improvised), and I definitely know that feeling. thanks for the listen.

Enjoyed ...
All the best songs are done without clicktracks! Well that's not entirely true, but I think a bit of of give and take in the rhythm adds hugely to the character of a song ... and it's certainly true of this one. It has lots of character but still simple and direct in its delivery. Very nice work.

yup
clicktracks are for wussies. make it easier when you're working with MIDI, but with a live band I would never use one. glad you liked the tune and the comments are way appreciated.

love the loose, jammy approach, i hear brian wilson here as much as pavement, you're a top notch composer/producer and this is a showcase tune - yeah i know the original song is great and it is for sure but that doesn't take away from what you've done with it. great job man, DL'd.

aw yeah
you know I love Brian Wilson. my contributions on this one were pretty much written before i ever picked up an instrument. when I listened to the original, this is what I heard. the song is just a great piece of indie pop for sure, i had a lot of fun with it. thanks man, you are too kind.

hard to keep up, yup!
This is very cool. I sort of liked the loneliness of the original version of this song as it was so desolate. As a re-do of it, this doesn't stray too far from the original feeling of the song, very well integrated into the concept, so I think it totally works.

while I would love to take the compliment, that's actually Ryan singing. i just sang backups during the verses. I will however be more than happy to take the drumming compliment as that is something I always want to improve on, and I spent more time on the drums than anything else. Thanks a bunch dude, and while I have your ear: you best not be retiring.

Awesome..
.. as good as the original is you've added real spice here Michael. The drumming is fantastically loose and cool. Takes the song into the mid 90's college rock territory, which is no bad thing.

this sounds so good... it does actually sound a bit like the Who in spots... indie-fied of course.. the bass part is cool too. not sloppy sounding at all. nice build towards the end... also kind of reminded me of VU "Heroin" that way.
