Problem With Love These Days

Description
Michael2 posted a rad song this moring/lastnight/whatever and he mentioned that he almost had harmonized leads. Got me thinking that I'd been meaning to record this song. I went through a harmonized lead phase a few years ago. I recorded this version this morning. Sadly, it may actually sound worse than my 4 track version. Hope you dig it.

Lyrics
I promised you we'd stay together
But now I'm breaking from your tether to stray
That's the problem with love these days
Said I'd given up completely
But you just sat like a fool believing I'd stay
That's the problem with love these days

You said you couldn't understand it
It's not like I would ever plan it this way
That's the problem with love these days
What now is left of the ruins?
There's nothing that can keep these wounds at bay
That's the problem with love these days

Hey yeah
Problems arise and we'll work around 'em
Hey yeah
What do you want me to do about 'em

You'd rather I stay here with you
Than to hear me tell you that we're through today
That's the problem with love these days
I'd rather suffer through the tears
Than regret it in the coming years and pay
That's the problem with love these days.

I really like this song. It has a green day feel to it. Your vocals even sound a lot like green day. It may benefit from being sped up just a tad but I dont know. I am a tinkerer. Nice job.

Thanks
I'm usually whining about my vocals. The first line is always the worst. I should just set aside time for going back to change it. I appreciate the compliments and the comparison. I used to hate Green Day, but I realized not long ago I like a good amount of their songs and when I read or see interviews I really identify with them. Level headed cats. Anyway, thanks again!

I thought the vocals were quite cool on this track. The harmonized lead reminds my of Vic Holman of all people. Lyrics are excellent.

The Weezer influence is very often felt in your tunes, which is always a great thing.

Really good song Eric.

yeah, Weezer
or whoever else. This is just really good, straight ahead, listenable. Anyway, it sounds good and tight and compact and complete to me.

cool
I like the rhythm behind the verses.
I like the classic early beatlesque song structure too.
great rock song, well played and recorded.
agree that it could be even better if sped up a bit (reminds of that movie "that thing you do" LOL. ) but also sounds good as is!

Cool movie! If I revisit this one I'll have to speed it up a bit.

no problem here
cool tune Eric. there is a kind of nice looseness to it, that gives it a bit of a relaxed feel. catchy tune, it sticks and resides in my head.

NICE lead harmonies.... and i do like harmonies, funny ending on the guitar, cool

Thanks!
I love harmonized leads because they help add an extra layer to my playing. My solos usually consist of 3 or 4 notes. So When I harmonize my leads, I can usually get that total up to about 7 or 8 notes :).

You sure know how to write a great song. The best part if this one for me is that chorus and the way it compliments the verses. Really dynamic. Guitars sound good too. The tempo works for me as is but the one thing I'd try if you were to revisit this is panning the harmonizing guitars a little. One to the right around 15-20 and vice-versa. They tend to pop out a little more that way. Other than that I think the mix is indie gritty good.

Remix
I think you're right. On our grand masterpiece (Wasted on You, 2008) I had the harmonized leads panned. When I listened to this in my car last night I noticed the leads were drowned out a bit and could use a nice bit of panning. Good pointers. Indie gritty is about the best I can shoot for!

5 gang signs
thank god for the ghost of hank williams, because this really does sound like it was recorded in the back seat of a '52 Cadillac.

i don't hear green day here as much as Paul Westerberg, this could have been on one of his basement albums, very cool sound. great quirky little chorus, love the "problems arise and we'll work around them" line, also the styling on the hey yeah.

i see the comments about speeding it up but i wouldn't. just put some poorly played real drums in there and it will be perfect. i really like the shambling rhythm, and if you speed it up that will probably fall apart.

this song makes me want to shrug my shoulders, mutter "F%$K it" to the dog, and sit and drink.

Didn't
Hank's widow marry Johnny Horton? Good lawd I love Johnny Horton's voice. I think he even got the "OK" from Hank's ghost, or at least that's the story I've heard. Something along those lines, anyway. The rhythm breaks down in the chorus, as is. I don't know what I was doing but halfway through each chorus my guitar playing is off-rhythm. Let's chalk it up to the "character" of the song, rather than being too lazy to go back and fix it now.

I'm actually pleased with the vocals with the exception of the very first line. This week I'm going to fix that first line and then pan the leads differently. But I'm glad you enjoyed it!
