Metropolitanne (with Paddy Navin)

Description
Paddy sent me this tune last week and asked if i'd like to collab on it. He had the basics of the song pretty much finished - drums, bass, rhythm guitar, lyrics - so I threw the mp3 into GB and tempie-fied (fried) it. Which is of course the short story. The long story is that musically and conceptually i just really fell for the tune. It's kind of a commuter love story, you know that girl you see every morning on the bus and she looks and you and you look at her and you wonder 'what if' and maybe you see her around other places too, out at lunch or whatever and you always make that brief connection...so there's that, but there's also this great and honest self effacing aspect to it, very Springsteen-like, where the character acknowledges that he'll never get to know the girl in any deeper way, because he knows he'll never take it further, he'll always be too shy or whatever. And of course the music behind it all is that great straight ahead 80's English beat, the real emo lol, the stuff i used to mope/hope to. So i had the really simple job of interpreting an already great song. I added the usual Tempie stuff, and I had a lot of fun, and found out that when you mix Paddy and Tempie you get something that sounds like Snow Patrol, which I think is pretty cool. So thanks to Paddy for allowing me to turn his tune into Frankenstein.

Lyrics
riding every day on the 53
she's staring out the window
she's smiling at me
but my face turns red
and i look away
cause i've got nothing to say
and i'm guessing that she works in a bank somewhere
with her pretty floral dresses
and the pencil in her hair
and i'm guessing now that she hates her job
and she cries about me

What if we took a chance, Metropolitanne?

taking out the trash on a busy street
imagine my surprise when who'd i meet
it's Anne one Tuesday night in Cambridge town
hand in hand with her man
and i'm guessing that they've been together for a while
cause she doesn't look at him
and he never cracks a smile
and i'm guessing now that's the way it's gonna stay
cause i've got nothing to say

I'm Feelin' It...

Yes getting the Snow Patrol thing around the chorus. Good story-telling in such a short space (doesn't feel like over 4 mins).

Drawbacks I'm afraid are the synthetic horn sound/keys could be much punchier for me, given that they are placed in the chorus. And the sudden ending on fade is

However, all that said, it's very OTM* and would sit well in any pop/rock/alt playlist, so for me it's another DL, thanks!

Collabs are great, eh?

feelin it
thanks dude - synth horns are so tricky - i try to take them out of synch and layer them in the mix to give them a more "real" sound which works alot of the time but here I agree, the real deal is in order. So tomorrow the citizens of the valley will thank you because you've inspired me to dust of the trumpet and let it ring from the mountaintop...we'll see what happens.

The Tempification of Paddy...
... there was a moment late last week when Craig sent me the first cut of what he'd done to my tune that just knocked me for six. I'm a straight up four-to-the-floor rocker, as is evidenced by my songs. On the face of it, Craig's layered, glittering compositions are a world away from my distortion guitar drenched tunes.
But what we share is a common set of themes and a common set of influences. This has been in evidence ever since we started to correspond and when I covered his "Heartbreaker."
I unabashedly love what Craig has done with my song here. The intonation in the vocals, the horns, the use of my original soundbed is all right up there.
The Snow Patrol thing is weird but cool - and again we both share an admiration for the band. This leaves me in no doubt that were we not separated by the Atlantic we'd have little choice but to form a band.
Kudos Craig, for giving my song the sheen and sparkle of a Tempie classic.

Don't Let The Pond Stop You!

Make it a mission to meet - I can't tell you how immense it is to do that with other, like-minded MJers. I'm still getting a lot out of hooking up with Bob (5EA), Bud and the artist formerly known as Tom Wounded (Dark Planet). It makes the collabs even more precious. You guys obviously 'click'. And then there's the buzz of actually posting the song. That's a great feeling.

Real trumpets would be top class, but OTT keys might do the trick - I suppose just knowing when to stop is the thing....

Still a great song whatever I say.

inspiration. What a great collab. The subject matter is familiar to anyone who's left the house and you guys keep all the mystery and intensity intact thru out. Great job.

inspiration
yeah man i think the lyrics are just great, no pretensions. also, i like the thought of myself as mysterious and intense. i'll project that on the train today and see what impression it makes on the "Annes". Or did you mean the SONG was mysterious and intense, not me? In that case i'll wear my headphones and sulk per usual. glad you liked it dude, thanks for the listen.

totally
in sync with your own universe. I like the way the horns make it dramatic and how their synthetic sound send the drama back to suburbia and missed opportunities ,which is what eighties music meant to me as a teenager.
tempie said 113 days ago (August 3rd, 2009)
horns
man really perceptive comment, that's exactly right. maybe instead of making the horns more realistic i should layer an old toy casio horn sound in there. not a bad idea at all...

what a great collab!
it sounds absolutely superb. good combo of the different strengths of two of the rockingest indie-type MJ'ers.
I'd love to hear more your band! what are you going to call it?
I tried the anagram server on "tempie + paddy navin", but the only one that seemed appropriate was "dynamited van pipe"... doesn't quite roll off the tongue.... (divine empty panda was second best)

Yummy!
Great concept, great lyrics, killer execution. I LOVE bank girls. Wrote a song about them once. I hope "Anne" really works in a bank. HOT. Really cool collab. I hope you guys do more. As I look down I see a dynamite_van_pipe that's online now. Wow. That was fast. Glad the Dutch are still rocking.

really like this
Great collab. You took Paddy's simple (but well put together) song and really made it shine. Love all your additions, especially the stabs in the verses and those horns. Great, catchy chorus too. I'm not hearing Snow Patrol in this as much as I'm hearing Wildflowers era Tom Petty. I'd very much like to do an acoustic cover of this...

yeah do it man, that would be great. that's funny about tom petty because i was hearing that too as i was trying to get the phrasing right on the verse. in fact i had to redo a verse because i thought it was too tom petty.

This is a great song. Makes me wish I could do a song with Tempie. If I ever get off this island my first order of business will be to visit Hurley, and then ask Tempie if he wants to rock.

The story unfolds nicely and is as heart-crushingly honest a situation as they come. We've all been there, mulling over the possibilities and inevitably giving up. Why we seem to choose regret over adventure, I'll never know.

regret over adventure
every get that feeling that you've met somebody before, only you can't place them. that's the feeling you give me.

we're a mopey animal, if we chose adventure all the time then we'd have nothing to regret. 3/4 of all great human art would immediately disappear.

stranger
I love songs about ships passing in the night. I have fantasies about stuff like this all the time. What if? Could she be "the one" and we'll only pass each other this once in life and the moment is gone....sad and romantic in the most wistfully longing kinda way. The middle EQ on the drums and the bass need to come up a bit. The EQ is a little thin over all. Mix in a little low end and you're golden. Thx for this one.

cooool work here...
Love the music here, and the singing and lyrics are excellent... hinting at our human impulse to "fill in the blanks" with our curiosity of others. I am not sure if you left the MP3 in there, or mixed the singing back into the original GB file... but the music bed sounds slightly "grainy", as if it were an MP3 of an MP3. I'd love to hear this remixed to spread the music out a little more and give it some more richness and dynamic power it deserves. This is so worth it.

Drakonis

filling in the blanks
yeah i definitely think when we are "filling in the blanks" we're kind of writing the story of ourselves, or what we'd like that story to be anyway, which makes for some cool fiction :) The bass, drums, and rhythm guitar are mixed into an MP3. Everything else is individually tracked in GB. We'll definitely split things up and do a remix. Glad you liked the tune!
