Metropolitanne

Description
This is the original version, which Tempie heard as a demo, slightly spruced up and fettled. I was reluctant to post this, seeing that Craig did such a good job of interpreting the tune, but I'm pretty proud of the song overall so here it is.

Check out Craig's collab version with me here

This is a more straight up 80's Indie Rock flavoured Metropolitanne, complete with rotor cabinet effects and a plinky solo!

Lyrics
riding every day on the 53
she's staring out the window
she's smiling at me
but my face turns red
and i look away
cause i've got nothing to say
and i'm guessing that she works in a bank somewhere
with her pretty floral dresses
and the pencil in her hair
and i'm guessing now that she hates her job
and she cries about me

Metropolitanne

taking out the trash on a busy street
imagine my surprise when who'd i meet
it's Anne one Tuesday night in Camden town
hand in hand with her man
and i'm guessing that they've been together for a while
cause she doesn't look at him
and he never cracks a smile
and i'm guessing now that's the way it's gonna stay
cause i've got nothing to say

I got nothing to say...
... I kinda still prefer the collab. I think it's 'cos I've heard this version too much! That said I'm still loving the rotor cabinet and the breakdown bridge is my favourite bit.

Paddy
Very nice simple jangly song. Reminds me of my younger days. Nice vocals and lead. I off now to listen to the other version.

Simple..
.. simple just about sums me up! I'm a jangler at heart. You can't grow up in the urban UK, listening to the Smiths and the Cure and not love a bit of jangle pop!
Glad you enjoyed.

Plinky
Love the plinky solo. I'm kind of a master of the plink so I know a good'n when I see it. This is a great song. Love the story telling. Painfully true. This is great, the collab is great, the impending Ridd cover will be great. Well done!

The success..
... of the plink is to know your limits! I'm a plinker, never to be a shredder.
The story is universal - which is why it seems to have caught people's imaginations. Every guy with a soul has had that moment...
I'm anticipating Ridd's acoustic cover with unabated fervour!

I forgot what I was logged in as. Anyway, this is really good. We went to the same guitar solo school. I almost wish Tempie had found room for that in his remix, but mine is not to question why, mine is but to listen and enjoy.

Guitar solo...
... I'm kinda glad Craig dumped the solo and the bridge because it makes his version more "his". That pleases me no end, 'cos his take is so gloriously tempified. That the two stand alongside each other and that folk seem to like both is wonderful.
I think I can say I'm really proud of this tune.

can't get it outta my head either
especially since I spent the better half of last night recording my cover! anyway, it's great to hear this version too. Just a really well written tune all around. Even if a monkey covered it it would still sound great, which you shall soon hear!

Covered in glory...
... Ridd I'm so looking forward to your take on this. I'm unbelievably chuffed that people like this sng and want to sing it. To me that's the ultimate accolade.

I like
The effects are great, give the song a very full feel, especially the drums. Good mixing - you bring out all the right parts in the mix.

Both sides
Ok, I've listened to both versions, and I like this one best. It clearly needed some help: your vocals are sometimes out of tune and the guitar solo is, eh, eh, eh....

That said, the collab version is too refined for me. Good vocals and guitar, but the mix is clean to the point of being thin and lacking energy. I think your denser sound serves the song better.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
