Glass (Mirror, Mirror On The Wall)

Description
I've been replacing windows at my house. And the old windows have been stacking up in the garage. In order to get rid of them I have been dismantling and breaking the glass in order to fit into the trash.

It got me to thinking of how many generations have looked out and in through those windows for 100 years. Mirrors are no different, you see, or don't, what is there or imagine what could be.

Lyrics
Glass (Mirror, Mirror On The Wall)

diamond sparkles
off the shattered glass
dividing two worlds
glass houses
with invisible walls
shattered and naked
exposing it all

i look in the mirror
i don't see anything at all
i look past the mirror
where dreams shall become
i look in the mirror

on the other side
of the looking glass
is inside out
and seen from within
one last thought
before the silver fades
i will be swallowed
somewhere in my dreams

i look in the mirror
i don't see anything at all
i look past the mirror
where dreams shall become
i look in the mirror
i look in the mirror

Old Windows
I hear you Vic, I live in a 1865 house that I just got rid of 25 years worth of old windows and doors. I kept some to replace the glass with mirrors, so your song is very fitting at this time. Cool song as always.

Glass
wow, for some reason when the vocals came in they were completely unexpected. I was totally lost in that great guitar opening with the shaker and synths. Nice stuff. Another excellent tune. You write such great classic songs that are totally accessible, but give them your own unique sound. Very cool.

surprise!
originally there were going to be vocals at the beginning. but i played that part in a different style and a so the vocal style wouldn't be the same. so i figured to put in a intro solo for something a little different.

Reflections
What a great song Vic. You vocal is very Beatlesque like something from maybe Rubber Soul. That's it, you're the lost Beatle Vic.

Great guitar and arrangement my friend, and a very cool song.

it's a lot easier throwing in 2 solos then writing additional lyrics. i thought it was a nice way to ease into the song. I tried several different vocal style's on this song. This one seemed to fit better, a little dreamy or woozy style.

Faved but didn't
get to comment... So I'm back! The guitars have Vic written all over them!

One thing I love about your music Vic... is I'm always surprised! I mean you don't follow the rules and that is great! It keeps me in suspense wondering what will come next!

Awesome!

Hi Dave
Pic yup me and a paper mache head i made a few years ago with a bit of photoshop for cutting and pasting.

Originally I hadn't intended a intro solo, but i am glad that i did. It seems to make a nice lead in.

What I
like most about your songs is how original the subject matter is. Actually it's tied with how much your arrangements are poptastic and rockulastic. You marry the too oft-separated concepts of rock and roll and philosophy. Love it.

Hey Eric
poptastic and rockulastic, that almost sound latin or names of gladiators.

I have no idea why i get conceptual about lyrics. maybe because i don't write love songs. lust songs maybe, love songs no. thanks man!

windows, mirrors.
hey man this one has a very relaxed feel, laid way back but very moody, very cinematic, which is cool because watching a movie is a lot like looking in a mirror too, in that we interpret it the way that we want to see ourselves as related to it. gee thanks professor right anyway cool tune, acoustic is mixed just right, love it when i can hear each individual string in a strum, really nice. cool photo too...

Thanks Craig
relaxed and laid back is how I've been doing the summer. so it must have snuck into the feel of the song. But, I will admit I was a bit annal in making sure the guitars came through cleanly. One bad note and it was a total do-over on that track.

I thought the phot turned out cool enough to se as my avatar for a while

i spent some time to get the guitars just right. i spent a little over three weeks changing approaches to some parts. Could be the longest time to work one song. Then again I worked only briefly form time to time on it.

cool concept Vic...

I love that Ibanez SA... crystal bright, and of course your great playing. Kind of a nowhere man of mirrors, not that it sounds like the old Beatles tune. Great sounds coming from your acoustics also, fills out the song nicely.

cheers,
Jack
Vic Holman said 2964 days ago (August 11th, 2009)
Thanks Jack
The Ibanez SA is a great alternative to a Fender strat. I was actually about to but a fender but the salesman was so slow I tried this one and bought it instead. I should of had mentioned that in the forum.

I love
the backstory of what is going on at your house. The introspection you had while shattering the glass shows how balanced you are, my friend!

Dreamy in a way - cool mix.

Love your work
The sounds of your guitar work is always outstanding - at once straightforward and accessible, yet always mysterious, as if there is some secret effect lurking in the shadows of the strings. At times I find myself thinking, when searching for the right guitar sound for a song, "I wonder what Vic Holman would use here." (That said, my songs never come out sounding like your wonderful productions.)

What else I particularly like about your music is your openness to finding song-material anywhere and everywhere, real or imagined. This piece, derived from the task of replacing house windows, is a perfect example. The idea simply sparkles like it's been wiped with Windex - there's so many different ways it could go. (I was expecting it to be about people looking in/looking out.) This openness keeps you putting up some of the most-original material on this site. In my slow, roundabout way, I find myself, over time, returning to listen to your material again and again.

One thought on this song. You write you have been breaking the glass to put it in the trash. That breaking must be noisy. Some of that noise must be really interesting. I kind of thought some of that breakage - perhaps as percussion, or maybe just a dramatic moment of crash - might make it into the soundtrack : )

Another Good One
Good song Vic. As always the guitars are great and the production is stunning.

It seems that the vocal in the second verse lost some steam. It did not seem to project the melody as well as in the first verse.

Good song though.
