Description
This here is a longer version of this: http://www.macjams.com/song/54888 - which was recorded in GB with a MacBook built-in mic and an air conditioner roaring in the background. It was meant to be a partial demo version - something I recorded so I could remember how it went when I got home from vacation and recorded it properly. However, some of you folks reckoned it sounded good as is all lo-fi like, and I tend to agree. So, I recorded a full version the same way. I may or may not record it in my 'home studio' at a later date. I think it might take some of it's charm and maybe authenticity away if I do...

Lyrics
got my six gun on my side
gone to kill a coward by the lake
waited for this thunderstorm
to block out that one shot I'm gonna take
beat my sister to the death
that's the last mistake he's gonna make

hand as steady as a rock
itchin for the trigger s'gonna pull
eyes as sharp as mountain hawk's
looking for his dinner down below
cool as calm before the storm
even though the storm is coming soon

It might not be right
to take a life
so daddy please forgive me
I know not what I do

the time has come for me to kill
to shoot that bastard right between the eyes
waiting for that rumbling sound
the thunderclap that's big enough to hide
the one shot that I need to take
the one shot that can guarantee he dies

passed out on the water's edge
empty bottle broken in the sand
six gun laying at his feet
I yell at him to pick it up and stand
and he doesn't make a single sound
doesn't do a thing that I demand

walk around to check him out
shine my lantern down where he's at rest
blood is streamin from his mouth
eyes that starin up at me are dead
guess he beat me to the the punch
the coward shot himself right in the head

It might not be right
to take a life
so Father please forgive him
He knows not what he's done

Great song!
And I can see the point of keeping it sort of lo-fi, theoretically. However, I think the white noise and sibilance is keeping me from enjoying this as much as I could. The squeaks are actually sort of painful to me. A little massaging with Sound Soap might help this out and keep the lo-fi quality, but I think I will just wait and hope that you do manage to get around to a more polished version.

jim
thanks for the honest feedback. glad you like the song. knowing me i probably will do a cleaned up version at some point that still retains at least some of the lo-fi quality. now all i hear are the 'squeaks'! haha

i like
the additions, but jim may be right. it's now a little long for the full lo-fi treatment. my impressions (if it were my song), either: leave it the original length OR lo-fi the first part of the song, and THEN you hold the chord at the end of:

It might not be right
to take a life
so daddy please forgive me
I know not what I do

and THEN come back in with a hi-fi sound for the rest of the song, until the very end of the last line. where you go back to lo-fi. just a thought, might be cool. might suck ass. but who knows. regardless I love the song in both versions.

thanks for the suggestions, michael. I totally hear you and it's a fine idea that I may try. gotta be careful to make it not sound too contrived.. although maybe it already does sound pretty contrived as is hehe. anyway thanks again glad you like

for what it's worth
Love this story. Makes me want a follow up song about the protagonist. How is he coping with having made the decision to kill a man and not getting to do it? Is he relieved he didn't have to do it? Is he unfulfilled because his outrage is left with no recourse? So many ways to take this story.

Really liked this song
So much so, I downloaded it and posted twice. Although the first didnt go through. I think simple works with this song. Sounds like a campfire song.

who am I
to stand up to the Goliaths of M2 and Jim? I'm a thorn among roses, but I wouldn't change a thing. The style of the recording evokes the great westerns of the '30's through '50's, or even a Twilight Zone episode. It's an uncomfortable situation/story so having a cozy recording would cheapen the experience. As is it's one of my absolute favorites from you in a while.

Really, really liking
this - very, very infectious. Could make a great video sound track - maybe some old black and white footage?
Cheers

great tune man
kind of a bright eyes kind of thing, and I really like the lo-fi recording, although i think i liked the slower pace of the initial version better. I don't think its too long - this kind of americana tune can go on forever, dylan has a few story songs that seem to never end and they work, so... anyway i love it man, its one of the coolest things you've done imo. lyrically it's really complex. it's an old timey tune but the subject matter is network newsy - all these @$$holes these days deciding to shoot a bunch of people and then shoot themselves - it's the ultimate screw you really isn't it - they take the lives of your loved ones and leave you no chance for the satisfaction (if there is any) of revenge. so it works on a variety of levels. and it's a cowboy story, and i love cowboy stories (i like to think of myself as everett hitch) so it just totally works for me. really dig it, thanks for the DL.

Ridd
The story song is making a comeback big-time. Great story, fun progression, Justice metted out at the end, what's not to love? and the air conditioner is the perfect touch.
