Description
Well it's been a while since I've submitted anything so I thought I'd post up this one having just come back from an internet-less vacation. Here's another remix of an old GB song. I wrote this back in 2004 after George W. Bush got re-elected, uploaded it here for a while, I think, and then deleted it since it was a bit rough and to my mind topical in a half-baked way. The "We Got Screwed" thread got me thinking about it again and so I opened it up in Logic and remixed it with new drums and some new effects on the lead vocal. Everything else is the same as the original GB recording. The piano and bass are the internal sounds from my Kurzweil keyboard because when I started out recording software instruments would easily overload my old eMac. The guitar is recorded with an MXL small diaphragm mic, I think.
I think the lyrics could be used by either conservatives or liberals and hopefully no one will take offense.

Lyrics
At the end of the day

And so we’re screwed, once again
Left feeling used and abused, betrayed by our friends

So what we’re left with
Are just disappointments
At the end of the day, it’s
Time to bear down and
Look it square in the eye

Wake up in the morning, and make the coffee
I’d not expected, How I would feel

Hard to deny I’m unhappy
With the way things turned out
At the end of the day, it’s
Time to wake up and
Sort it all out

It’s not time yet to pack it in
It’s not time yet to say goodbye
On the horizon is another mountain
It’s not too early to prepare for the climb

So there’s them that claim victory, I wouldn’t put it quite that way
When deception was the strategy, I wonder how they sleep at the end of the day

So what we’re left with
Are just disappointments
At the end of the day, it’s
Time to bear down and
Look it square in the eye

Your B sides beat most A sides.
I have failed utterly at rhyme, it all feels so trite, and so I appreciate your approach to non-rhyme but fine meter nonetheless. While I'm not into "ge, this sounds like," the presence you give your vox here seems to share some sensibility with ol' Leonard Cohen. I don't have an issue with the Kurweil piano at all, nor the bass, which you tuck in well and let it do its job of holding up your guitar and vocal. Oh, the brushes are just right, btw. Jim, your dusted-off B sides beat most A sides.

Thanks!
If I had the time, I'd probably re-do the vocal and piano and probably even the bass on this but this is just a quick re-mix. It's still a bit slipshod, but I really wrote and recorded this in one day or so. The drums are EZ Drummer Nashville Kit, with Groove Monkee loops, BTW, and not even massaged very much. The guitar is a bit rough but it sort of goes with the off-the-cuff roots of this song, which unlike some of my songs, was really pretty much dashed off. Hence the sort of lack of a rhyme structure; I think with the sing-song nature of the melody, I sort of get away with it hehehe. But thanks for all the kind words.

Jim
Here's to lookin it square in the eye. I Like the politico gender neutral stance... usable by both 'sides'. I think you have some real zeitgeist going here as well as a solid tune... well played and conceived. Thanks loads!

chord changes are great. i like the piano, acoustic and brushes combination. it fits well with the concept of the song - straight up and honest. good vox and love the lyrics

I have to
agree with Bob Six's Cohen reference. A very poignant folk ramble - I love the acoustic guitar tone.

You've got some huge sounds here, Jim...
I'm listening on my headphones, and all the sounds seem full and rich and, even though I know it can't be, they sound kind of TALL. But nothing gets in the way of anything else....

Nice use of reverb all around.... You seem to get some very interesting reverb effects... natural, but sometimes more natural than natural...

I like how your voice sounds, too, so I'd love to hear what you did with the vocal track... Reverb...compression... other stuff.... Mic? Yeah, of course you sang well, too, of course....

Sounds very full in the phones....

I have been playing music a long time. When I was growing up my brothers had a band called the Regal Tones which was quite popular in our little town in upstate New York State. They got bitten by the music bug and later went on to found the p... [see more]
