Description
This song is based on the 16 beat LIOLI9 loop, Dance Floor Pattern 43, with beat number 7 removed, to form a 4+3+4+4 compound time signature.

The original loop instrument appears in the background as a drone, particularly at the end. The loop also is played on a guitar synth here and there. The loop is used as the basis of the drum rhythm patterns and for the piano pattern at the start of the instrumental build. And finally, the loop is also the starting point for the melody.

lyrics background:
The name of the challenge loop is part of the ideas in the lyrics. Perhaps this song is about how I decided forsake music to pursue another career? Or an apology to a long lost high school sweetheart? Or some sort of vague feeling of regret?

instruments:
Gibson L00 acoustic guitar, capo
various GarageBand synths
pencil tool

chords: (capo on 3rd fret)
Am-/- /// G-/- /-/-
F-/- /// D-/- E7-/-
C-/- /// D-/- /-/-
G-/- /// C-/- E7-/-

Lyrics
I Dance My Way To You

(verse 1)
When we danced at our school
And we'd float 'cross the dance floor
It was fun drifting far apart
When we knew by the end
We'd be back together

(verse 2)
At the close of that song
When I split for employment
It was fun being on my own
Living life, chasing dreams
And finding a purpose

(chorus)
Every day
There's a million lives
There's a million lies
That we can tell to ourselves
Many days, many ways
The water under the bridge
But I always knew
I'd dance my way to you

(verse 3)
Many years have gone by
I forgot all about us
And our song on the radio
Doesn't sing to my soul
I'd heard it too many times

Whoa, Bill
You really put that nasty loop to good use here. Like the way you figured out some lyrics that fit it. I alos like how this builds as it moves through the song, gaining power and energy as it does.

Great work here Bill,

Ed

the loop's not that nasty

i thought it was funny to use "dance floor" in the lyrics - it's sort of self-referential

slow builds just seem to be my pattern on many songs

thank you

I wasn't sure at the start
but then it all fell into place rather nicely. Slightly odd but it works really well.

Cheers

Dick

you always say my stuff is odd. that's OK by me.

the start IS very weak, both in the non-multitracked vocal which nicely exposes my lack of singing ability - and in the minimal backup. it's meant to show the distance of time as well as the innocence of the narrator at that point. i guess the big risk in doing that is losing my audience in the first 8 bars.

at least i think that was what i was doing!

thanks

delicious
the puzzle pieces you've created out of the original polioligonal loop are intricate, and fit together into a wonderfully compelling piece.

not sure what the pic means - maybe a dance-step diagram? it's the loop with some edges added on.

it was a puzzle for me - it took a long time to fit this thing together. vocals were next to last. guitar was last.

thanks

Great stuff
How did you get the vox to sound like that?

i hope you LIKED the vox :-) if not, here's what NOT to do:

i recorded each vocal track using a M-Audio Microtrack at about 3 inches from the tee-mic at just-below eye-level (nose-level?) to avoid pops. in stereo.

each vocal track has its own multiband compression, EQ to brighten the consonants, and cut the bass. i put on 50% enhance tuning mostly to make the multitracks "lock" a little more closely.

first verse is a single centered vocal track. the others are multitracked (two takes) - verse is moderately panned (+/- maybe 16 or so) and chorus is more widely panned (+/- maybe 32 or so).

thanks for listening and asking a question

different than the prelude version - but I get it... I like both of these pieces Bill, great job as usual from you.

it was sort of arbitrary which one came first. i guess i thought this one was a little stronger - so, using the scheme of "save the best for last" - i did.

glad you liked

Bill,
You really are a creative bugger! The prelude was really wonderful, but this song version takes it in a completely new direction. This is fantastic writing and very creative production. I even forget its LIOLI.

using the loop as a drone really freed things up. tossing out one beat helped put it in a space not everyone had gone to before. if you know what i mean.

it took over a week to create the core idea for the lyrics - writer's block i guess - but once i got it i had fun putting it together - some of it rhymes, and some not - there is a purpose to that actually.

many thanks

thanks for stopping by to listen and comment.

the progression grew from the ascending notes - i must admit i was thinking about "a day in the life" or perhaps "i am the eggman" when i came up with it.

by the time i realized i wanted real acoustic guitar in there, i had already written the strings for C minor. (also in C minor the melody fits just barely inside my vocal range.) transposing it to A minor ruined the strings - they sounded bad and i didn't want to give up that setting and rewrite the whole thing. plus i couldn't sing in that key anyway.

so, i went out and bought a capo for the guitar. (we needed one anyway!) in A minor, the chords are easy to play and nice full-sounding (5 or 6 strings).

i was stuck for over a week with no lyrics to sing, but all the rest ready to go. highly frustrating.

man, what a mess of problems to solve for this project!

thanks again

No reason
that 'programmatic music' has to be heartless. This is a pop chart topper in an alternate universe! Plus, those blue-line-connected notes in your piano scroll image have a 'VW' air: your signature tune...

I really like the way everything meshes in this one; rules and loops be damned: this is a totally cool song!
