Description

This is my third and and final piece in this hang drum experiment inspired by the book "The Deptford Trilogy" by Canadian author Robertson Davies.

The third book in the trilogy is "World of Wonders" and is about the nasty realities of life within a traveling carnival in the 1930's, as well as a story about the wonders of traveling the world. There is also a part of the book about the decline of the theater as movies came into being. So, this song is a representation of many different moods and scenes as I tried to capture all of what was in this incredible book.

As the third piece of this hang drum trilogy, I've incorporated sounds and themes from both of the first two pieces, in order to tie everything together. So you'll hear the boys choir and some familiar synths and drums from "Foolsaint" as well as the chinese ehru and some synths/drums from "Into The Tunnel".

This is, um....a little different. Hope you enjoy it.

	I really like this one a lot. Ambitious and interesting, it flows smoothly, yet with surreal quirkiness, through a rich landscape of emotion, sound, and wonder. This challenges the listener to trust her soundscape as a guide through a unique and different sort of adventure.

How your creativity has expanded by leaps and bounds in just a few weeks! THIS is an amazing collection of images in sound that I am sure replicates major sections of the novel you describe above. You have a real affinity for connecting mood and scene. This is so well-thought-out and beautifully mixed. I can only imagine the hours it must have taken to mix this. Congratulations on another spectacular composition.

You leave such wonderful comments on my songs. Thank you - I truly appreciate your words of support and encouragement. It's amazing how the mind expands when given more tools and toys to play with! I've also been challenging myself to find inspiration and ideas in more places. As far as the mix on this one, I actually mixed a lot of it as I wrote it. It seemed necessary on this one to do that, so that I could hear each detail. So by the end of the piece there was only some final tweak mixing to do.

Inspires an ancient dragon proverb...
"To live nowhere is to live everywhere" -- Dragon Fact and Fiction, chapter 5. The traveling circus, having no residence, the whole world becomes your residence. Speaking of which, this quirky imagery-inducing piece reminds me a bit of the haunting mixture of story and music in "Freak Show" by The Residents (one of my favorites is "Harry the Head" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dFukfz65pU ). But I digress as always... this is a very evocative music-story. Excellent!

I love that hang drum!
Really wonderful. There is a Bruce Cockburn song and album called World of Wonders which inspired me to read the book originally, and it is indeed a wonderful book, but I like this piece almost better. It's very wonder-full and mysterious. I love the way it builds up to the part where speeds up. Such attention to detail!

Fascinating piece
and so very interesting to listen to, with all the different sounds, which you've blended so well together. This is very clever, I love those percussive sounds you've used, which give such an interest to the musical story.... and what a good idea to use the book as a theme. Love the ending, with the speeding up of the tempo, which finally sounds like an excited audience rising to their feet with a cheer. It has the feel of actually being in a Theatre or Music hall at the time of 'Hercule Poirot' or thereabouts. Love it, regards M

Lush and Evocative
First of all, I love this piece for itself - hadn't heard any of your other music yet but was drawn to the fact that it was experimental. I love the way you have woven all of these different themes and instruments (incl. voices) together. It's a very satisfying journey to follow you through the way your mind is working here.

Secondly, you are the first person I've ever seen list French Horn as an instrument they play! I haven't played in years but I was first chair through high school - loved that instrument! :)

almost like being in a theater or circus. the sound effects are a brilliant touch and make the music more than just an aural experience. I agree with Patrick - very courageous and creative - and tremendously enjoyable I might add! Loved the previous hang drum experiments and this one is a fitting end to the trilogy.
