Description
Getting all sentimental on y'all. There are lots of songs called "If Only..." and so I figure it must be a pretty common sentiment, at that. Here's my M.O.R. stab at it - very un-contemporary and not very "folk" - but what would you call it? Country?

Lyrics
David McCord
If Only We Could

So many places I would rather be
So many sights that I would rather see
So many times I wish that you and me
Could spend more time a-lone

When I think of all the days we’ve got
The fact that this may be our only shot
You know I think a-bout it quite a lot
The way the years have flown

If only
We could rise above the world that rushes by
If only
By the pow’r of love it-would stop for you and I
If only
We could wish away the burdens on our heart
If only
We could share each day and never be a- part If only...

I don’t believe the awesome cosmic plan
comes down to just one woman and one man
But life goes on, we do the best we can
To spend more time to-gether

There’s so much more to life than fits in time
And so much more I wish was yours and mine
We hang on tightly to the tie that binds
The love that lasts for-ever

If only
We could rise above the world that rushes by
If only
By the pow’r of love it-would stop for you and I
If only
We could wish away the burdens on our heart
If only
We could share each day and never be a- part If only...

This is like a Showtune
from a musical. That's the genre that came to mind as I listened to it Dave.

It's an excellent song lyrically and vocally. The back tracks are very well done.

Showtune from a musical, definitely

So many...
...tunes I missed while on vacation! This was one of them. Lovely bit of songwriting. Love the sentiments expressed...and the tasteful arrangement. I agree with comment that this could work in a musical theatre piece.Really enjoyed this, David

You sure are a prolific songwriter!
David, I can't keep up! You zip off songs so quickly, and make it all sound effortless. you amaze me. One part of reminds me of Michael Smith song for some reason, The chord progression, I think.. Anyway I liked it very much.

Well...
Some of these songs are from the archives... been writing for many years. I generally have a half dozen tunes in the works at any given time, plus that huge notebook of bits and pieces. Sometimes it just flows out, y'know?

Just a folk singer. Well - mostly a folk singer, but I like to try just about every style a middle-class white guy from Mid-Michigan can sincerely try. Be sure to check out my "band" — I used to play R&R with these guys back in the 70s, but now we'... [see more]
