Description

I'm going to need some cheese to go with this whine. This is a song I wrote in 2001. I had just broken up with my girlfriend (who is now my wife - you do the math). I remember thinking I was fine, but in retrospect it was probably the loneliest I've ever been. Boo hoo. I know. SPOILER ALERT: I tricked that girl in to marrying me after 2 years apart. The redeeming part of the song is the end where it gets a little lighter and kind of comes alive. Without the end it would be like a million other "woe is me" songs of mine.

So get out your kleenex and roll your eyes.

	Hankie I was going for a Beach Boys type thing. The 4 track version of this song ends no different than it starts. So I thought I'd mix it up a bit. no eyerolling here, just admiration for a killer song.
in particular, the end part of the song is absolutely sublime.
the front part of the song is cool too. I would have liked to hear a little more on it though, like maybe more piano and/or another instrument... maybe more of a build to, or even brief foreshadowing of the payoff at the end... could make a great song mindblowingly good, but that's just my opinion...
as always I'm impressed by your songwriting skills....

Killer Diller
Thanks! I had some ambient droney noises in the beginning but it felt forced or out of place. The other reason the first part is so naked is because it makes the ending sound more sparkly than it really is. You know Elliott Smith's "2:45 AM" off of Either/Or? The drums and bass kick in right as the song starts to fade out. When I first heard that I was like "Damn! that should have kicked in after 30 seconds, not 2 minutes!" Then after a while I admired him bucking convention like that. So though this song owes nothing to Elliott sonically, I've always kind of dug how that song went down.

Wow. I'm wordy. Anyway, I also think you're right. Maybe a sneak-a-peak of what's to come would be kind of cool and round the song out as a whole. Let's not lose sight that I really have no idea what I'm doing :).

I may sing like Christopher Lucifer, but I like tambourines and sunshine. That would be a killer lyric. Although I really love Dylan, I love the idea of people taking pride in shutting down music snobs. It's like Mojo Nixon's diatribe against Morrissey in his cover of "Girlfriend in a Coma". Not that Relic was pushing thumb against music snobs. Or whatever. Relic? Am I still talking?

man the piano is great. it picks the tune up and makes it honest in a way I can't explain. also the music box/xylophone sound at the end is fantastic. mopey tunes have a place dude, think about "in my room"...especially mopey songs that lift you up in the way that this tune does. great song man, it's on the ipod to help me ease back into work.

Honest and vulnerable
It's always interesting how we compose around what is true for us in that moment and then later want to cover those feelings up by feeling like taking the song off MJ or not performing it again or saying it is no good or whatever.

This is a great ballad that rings true and uncontrived. The ending is such a brilliant layering of hope and rays of sunshine on the more minimalist and intimate feel of the main parts of the song. Nice production too BTW. A Dload for sure.
