Description
This piece has had an interesting evolution. I wrote it 10 years ago for my daughter as she entered a new relationship, one that seemed to have fledgling promise. (Ultimately, she met the man of her dreams, they got married, have two children, and all is good.) About a year ago, I sent it off to Gail (http://www.macjams.com/artist/gail60), thinking of a collaboration. She graciously put down a vocal track and then, with the pressures of work and other commitments, I promptly just sort of let it slide. Three weeks ago, Jack Hemby (http://www.macjams.com/artist/davisamerica) dropped me a note about the piece. Apparently Gail had sent a copy to him months ago. With Jack’s encouragement (and the offered producer help of Eduard (http://www.macjams.com/artist/drakonis), I reorchestrated the number and sent if off to Gail. A bad toothache put her on the sidelines for a week or so, but then she nailed a wonderful track that she sent off to me. I fully intended to take Eduard up on his offer to mix this because I didn’t think I was capable. However, I took a stab at it…and another…and another. Gail supplied a new vocal that we had discussed via e-mail and we began the back and forth that such a collaboration would take. I didn’t mean to leave Eduard out of the loop (he’s such a generous and gracious guy!), but I had fun gluing all the parts together and mixing it in my little studio. … I am amazed that all of this comes together because of Jack’s love for the number and his insistence and encouragement that Gail and I team up. Ed has also been a great inspiration to pull this whole thing together. None of us has ever met, nor stood in the same space. What an amazing world we live in where we can create beautiful songs together…And, Gail, I am so grateful for your patience, you willingness to work on this little project, and for the magic of your beautiful voice that brings such elegance and sparkle to my little song. I hope all who hear this will find a few minutes of peace and beauty and hopefulness in our collaboration.

Lyrics

When evening comes, I think of you.
I wonder how you are.
Imagining the day that’s through,
I wish upon a star.
Here’s hoping you will sleep in peace
And wake refreshed and new.
Here’s hoping that you’ll think about me, too.

The miles that part us can’t divide,
The distance can’t remove
The feeling that I’ve found inside
That one day I may prove.
Is it too much, too soon to tell,
Too quickly have I seen?
Or do you understand the words I mean?

I know it’s not the time right now.
We both have things to do.
We’ve shared a little, but we’ve found
Our feelings to be true.
If honesty is all we have,
Then let it be our bond
’Til maybe one day we might move beyond.

talk about global warming...
this has enough warmth to melt glaciers... I was flattered to be asked to mix this, but even happier to see you take on the tricky job yourself, Paul, bravo! Gail, gorgeous lyrics and singing. Paul, superb music writing, as usual, great orchestral touches, excellent playing. And the only thing I can critique is that your beautiful music could be brought up a bit, without harming Gail's singing at all... your part needs to be heard too! Jack was right, this is a gem, thank you for sharing it with us!
ttfn,
Eduard

It wouldn't
matter who sung this Paul, I would still know that you wrote it. The fact that Gail is singing it gives it that extra zing and beauty. A lovely song beautifully performed all round and the production (thanks to all concerned) is top notch, beautiful, regards M

Lovely
This has Paul Page written all over it… the tasteful orchestration, the beautiful melody, simple but perfect accompaniment, sentimental lyrics (in the best sense!), and romantic sensibility… another perfect gem, Paul!

And lovely singing by Gail too!

Really sweet lyrics
well performed and backed. I agree with Eduard, though, that the music could have come forward slightly without hurting. Thanks for a very nice listen (and download).

Just heart filling!
Paul and Gail, I am really moved. This was certainly worth waiting for. It is really a very professionally produced piece. Paul, I never saw your stuff before and am one again amazed at the number of absolutely amazing talents we have here at MJ. I, of course, am familiar with Gails work on the ivories. Guys, just a really great job!

Absolutely stunning work
Gail's voice is beautiful and sits so well in the mix. Paul - your playing is superb as always and the song itself is really excellent. Though the story is different I can relate to the feelings - having just left my daughter at college on the other side of the country.
