Description
Same techniques mauled on Orchid's Next Fling. This outing is in a complex time signature.
I want to dedicate this piece to my friend John Whitehead. John writes and sings great songs. He's a great guitar player too, plays like that guy in Elvis's band. John eggs me on to experiment. Here ya go pal...
Sitting around writing and producing great songs would just wreck my perfect lifestyle.

Orchid Bounces Rehab
It started like the Tulls passion play and then
widen into more jazzy ..extraordinary keys work
rhnx alot for sharin

Hi Feter
Don't you have a life outside MJ? Thanks for the description of the tune.
Who is Tulls?
I appreciate you, thanks for listening...

Hi Doug !
Unfortunatly I dont have life ...and I was talking about
Jethro Tull ..usually mentioned between MJers as the Tulls !!!!

peace !
Daugrin said 80 days ago (September 3rd, 2009)
Orchid
Feter, I appreciate you very much. I despise "Tulls".
Every musician has to choose between Ian Anderson's ilk and the Allman Bros. They are forks in the tradition. Choose more life Feter.

Again, I can't listen to Tulls at all. So I never heard that tune. Interesting, I guess it just goes to know ya..

Tested Feter's Connection
Fetter and Mike suggested this piece sounds like the Passion Play by Jethro Tull. I never heard the song, so I had to go and listen. I did, and it don't. There is no similarity, structurally by meter, harmony, or tone.

More than an ounce of Bounce
Hey, I am very touched by that dedication. Thanks so much, Mr. Grin!

You got a big heart and an even bigger sound.
When the Daug's in the house I know I better bring my BIG ears.

Wow. This swings big time.

I think I'm learning how to listen to your stuff on its own terms. Love the angular piano and smokin' percussion. Sexy textures in this, too: marimba, shakere??

The coolest thing is that it sounds like a totally gelled live performance. How do you that?

1+1+2+3+5/8 fibonacci time? This sounds like ELP playing at the Star Wars Cantina after a few Romulan Ales... wow that was weird, and disturbingly satisfying, as only you can do. :-)

Hi Drak
Sorry no fibonacci here, see JWs note above, the idea is to approach this on the terms of the composition.
Weird and disturbingly satisfying is a correct way to characterize this...all the dissonance and "suggested rhythms" demand your listening apparatus smooth things out...you are part of the experience, not passive, but engaged.
So I kept it short...

Some martian mambo in there somewhere.. This is really good stuff. I love the feel of it. It reminds me of Sun Ra.. Very cool.

Martian Makings Matter
An "original" poly rhythmic loop is recycled and re-harmonized. Three harmonies presented. The additional harmonic material, right hand piano, was inspired by the theme from the old Captain Kangaroo TV show. Everything is recycled.

If you want to explore these harmonic techniques, they appear in a straight ahead Bebop frame, listen to "Orchid's Next Fling". You can hear similar sounds in Tom And Jerry cartoons from the 40's...

So, sitting around
and producing crappy songs wouldn't wreck your perfect lifestyle? WOT? This does not suck.
This is well, unusual. I can't sing to this. Maybe then, it is a successful outing for you. Who the hell needs lyrics and singing from some no talent wannabe? I like it. It will grow on me, I'm sure. My tastes have expanded in scope since coming here. But, I still have no standards. Thank you.

Geez Daug...
The comparison with one of the most brilliant bands in rock history (Jethro Tull) doesn't mean one hasn't accepted the piece on it's own terms. It IS, however, meant to be a high compliment and should be taken as such!

Randomness
TB, I have a respect for the "random" method of some MJ townies. My favorite is SmokeyVW. Bill is a dam fine musician and I can't praise him enough. I dedicated the first Orchid piece I made to Bill. I can't use random processes. I have to "hear" the thing, or I am unable to proceed. The difference in two words: capture-vs-exploration. Bill is a sonic explorer!

Hello Max
Unsettling? Okay.
This has been interesting feedback.
You hear Zappa, Feter , Mike, and Skean hear Jethro Tull, Ste hears Miles Davis, Andy hears Gentle Giant, Steve hears Sun Ra, TBeing esq believes it is random, Drak entones ELP and science fiction. Char says it is unusual.
John says he accepts the piece for what it is on its own terms...MR is using terms like melting pot.
I'm glad ya'll enjoyed it for whatever reason!
I hope you will come back for the next go round...

Skean just avoided the sonic enema, well done :)
Mike and Feter will have to take the composition class.
In order to appreciate a woman's voice you really have to listen to it.
Each gal has a meter, tone and range all her own. Each listening opportunity at Macjams is like meeting a lady. Even at Mike's House...Lol You have to give the gal a chance to show ya what's she's got! Orchid Bounces Rehab speaks with tritone and whole tone harmony, very rare outside the Daug House. Sounds like she spoke to you...

very cool track no matter what the time sig is. Some extra cool use of the synths and drums on this my friend.

No Not Orchid
This sounds like.. can't think of the name.. sounds like nobody I've ever heard. My first listen i thought it was a bunch of distorted random stuff slapped together, but after the second listen, I rather liked it. If the distortion is intended then congratulations - it works.

Daugrin said 77 days ago (September 6th, 2009)
Hello John
Welcome to the Daug House. No distortion was used in the making of this material. What you are calling distortions are harmonies new to your ears. The same harmonies are in Orchid's Next Fling, where they are easier to hear because the setting is not as radical.
Lots of interesting stuff for you in the Daug House. Poke around...

This reminds me of
Tom Jones or maybe Metallica. Perhaps... oh well I got nothin in the comparison department. Very cool piece with a very odd time signature. In fact the harmonies were kinda odd. Dont know that I would characterize them as dissonant though. They sounded like they blended nicely to my ear, just different. Enjoyed it.
