Description
I've been sitting on this for a while - recorded it in June this year after some unwanted online attention led me to some unresolved anger (which is now resolved btw).

Just Fenders and midi drums, played in at the keyboard.

Lyrics
Under My Skin
© Neil Porter 2009

You’ve been sitting in your room somewhere
You’ve been up all night
But you’re getting nowhere
You’ve been trying to get under my skin
Well I just won’t give up
Well you can’t come in

You’ve been trying to get under my skin
You’ve been trying to get under my skin
You’ve been trying to get under my skin
Well I just won’t give up
Well you can’t come in

Do you have another life somewhere?
Are you all alone?
Do you hate it there?
You’ve been trying to get under my skin
Well I just won’t give up
Well you can’t come in

Maybe you dabble in deception
Could be you travel in disguise
It seems you’re after some attention
Maybe there’s just no reason why

You’ve been slipping on the slide these days
You can’t let go
You can’t keep away
You’ve been trying to get under my skin
Well I just won’t give up
Well you can’t come in

You’ve been waiting ‘til I drop my guard
You’re awake all night
And you take it hard
You’ve been trying to get under my skin
Well I just won’t give up
Well you can’t come in

When I got home last night I thought I was going to have to re-do the vocals, but with a little tweaking and almost forgotten magic spells in Logic, it came up OK.

Neil, I like...

the sparse nature of this song. Guitars are sounding great... a bit of Stones feel. The song is a groover... not getting under my skin, but definitely getting in head. Love your vox harmonies, tight and edgy... cool.

Groover is good. I've become nostalgic for the "old jiguma" style letely because most of my music is more "up" these days, but I do like a good groove. Thanks for the listen and comment.

... Ya only left that word out, but I practiced the chorus line with it in, so just always, it's perft!... LOL

Now, for me, this tune works to speak to everyone I know (including me) at some frustrating point during the term of any ongoing involvement. Awesome piece of work, Neil! Diggn it, big time! It's got a summertime vibe to it or maybe I'm having a summertime head-set! Regardless, it's working to bounce away all things related to seasonal darkness! Love it! Thanks! Macca

Not Fair
I'm just realizing what an unfair advantage you have, because not only are you a great lyricist and songwriter, but you're a bassist under it all and these days I'm just realizing how much heavy lifting a good bass line does.

So, take away the really catchy lyrics and snappy vocal and pretty damn good lead guitar and your gift for great rhythm tracks and you're on the same field as everyone else, Porter! :-p

I missed the hijinks this June, but I'm not surprised to see you channeled a negative experience into something positive. I agree with the people who are saying this sounds like a lost George Harrison track, but I often think that about your songs, which is obviously a huge compliment.

Nice to be hearing your music, Neil. One of the best parts about being back around these parts. --L

Lisa!
Good to see you around MJ - it's been a while. Hijinks? June? I missed them too ;)

We seem to have fortuitously decided to post at the same time, and it is good to see your chirpy comment here. I can see it in lights now: "bass player makes good" - bass players may hold everything together, but, in my experience at least, they rarely get the girls like vocalists and lead guitarists do/did. But this has nothing to do with why I am now transformed into a guitarist - way too old for that to be an issue anymore. I have to say that bass playing has something "deep" (no pun intended) about it, but the sheer joy and exuberence of playing lead breaks leaves bass a little in the cold.

I'm ranting - it's way past wine o'clock (my only excuse).

I notice the ranks of "old-timers" are rapidly thinning here at MJ - hang in (t)here, maybe we're the only ones left.

2010 reunion coming up in February - see you there.

Cheers,
Neil

Neil,
I really like your use of 'double/triple up' vocals in the verse, as well as the harmonies in the chorus. This technique REALLY suits your vocal style.

As for the song, what can I say which hasn't already been said?
Good catchy chorus, lyrics (as per usual) are great...

Thanks for uploading!

Not the first to mention it, but those lead licks are beautiful Neil. I love the tone on them too. (The artist formerly known as Mandolinquent). I love the linear feel of this... especially the bass. It gives the whole thing a nicely menacing air.

Outlet
I dig the lead guitar licks that pop in and out over the nicely even straight ahead mix. The "maybe you" break is my fav moment, and the simply put emotional outbursts of the lead gtr. The vocals have a few notes fairly low in your range, would've boosted them a tad, maybe exhaled in exasperated and angered ways to add a layer of vocal emotion (which is even and unflapped, like the lyrics suggest), but I have a feeling there was real anger there and would've liked to feel a vocal outburst somewhere to have a better feeling of the reserve you were trying to maintain, if that makes sense. Very solid track.

Ah, if the world could resolve anger thru music. What a place it would be. We'd have sing-offs instead of war. Cool idea, huh? I can imagine the planet, visited by Kirk and Spock, on a star Trek episode. Can't really imagine it here, sadly.

I've been working through replying to comments for an hour or more to reach yours.

First, thanks for the very kind comment and suggestions. You've been a big part in my progress with music since I started playing again, and any suggestions are taken seriously. I was going to raise this a few steps to make the low vocal notes better, but couldn't face re-doing the guitars. Maybe for the CD ;)

Dubya and Osama in a singout in 2001 - I'd like to have seen that! Might have saved a whole lot of pain - assuming Dubya could sing of course.

Thanks again.

Hi Jason
Thanks for the listen. No, the keyboard is used for the drums. I played the drums in using the keyboard - usually I do one drum at a time (start with the kick drum, then the snare, then hihats and finally add highlights with toms and other cymbals). It works for me, and I find it quite efficient. The guitar tracks are played into my iMac via my Behringer interface - all the sounds are set using Logic settings.

Glad you liked it.

I use Logic Pro 8, but I'm sure you can use a midi keyboard for playing drums in GB and the like. You need to open a virtual instrument track and load it up with one of the virtual drum kits available - not sure what's there in GB, but I'm sure there's one there somewhere. If you enable the track for recording, and play notes on the keyboard, you should hear various drum sounds through your phones/speakers. It's then just a matter of doing a track of kick drum, one of snare etc until you have a brilliant drum track.

Works for me, and worth some experimentation.

Great Band Feel
As someone trying to come to terms with Logic Studio and making it sound organic, the natural-sounding (and yes, a little Stones-y) groove of this track is an inspiration. Enjoyed the whole thing but I'm especially partial to the bridge, like a few other commenters.

I've been avoiding you...
... cause I forgot about the vocal I owed you - i'll use the move to Kenya as an excuse ....
anyway, had to comment on this great track. Lovely light feel, lovely mix, great concise lyric .... this is an AOR hit waiting to happen. Great work Neil.

And,er, sorry ...

Thanks for the visit Steve
I wouldn't worry too much about that particular song - we're getting it sorted live now. Absolutely not a problem.

Ahhhh - if only I knew how to get airplay for my music (apart from Blaine and local radio0!

Cheers from Oz,
