Mad Man

Description
This song has been brewing for a while. Since I recently got a new Mac I have going back and finishing some tracks that my old G4 couldn't handle.

Some of my older songs sound cinematic in nature but this one takes the cake. It has a dark brooding cadence complete with a short drum break. It's not a happy song and might make you feel sort of desolate or alone.

Compositionally this song started out with the drum pattern and grew from there. I'm not sure why I chose the title 'Mad Man' or why I picked a picture of Einstein but in some ways I thought it was fitting.

Anyway, this song is dedicated to crazy geniuses whose academic work is at first scoffed at but later realized as the real deal. It must be maddening to know your right when others bring you down. Here's to Mad Men everywhere.

Sounds like
my upright piano. Great tone. The machine gun drum hits are quite mad. You really captured t he feeling of dejected madness. It would be infuriating to have the answer only to have people not believe you. Makes me think of scientists who work with stem cells, only to have funding pulled by people freaked out by it. Think of what we could have accomplished by now.

Exactly!
That's a good point about the stem cell research. Scientists have known for a long time the benefits of doing it but finally the red tape is getting cleared so they can make some head way!

I wish I had a 'real' piano to record! Oh well, sometimes it's just easier to play a sampled one!

Oh, and thanks for being the first to comment on this!

Hmmm ..this is deep ...pyschodelic of the neo
70s ..loved the moog violin sound here ...lovely
the piano as solemn as the a choir ..the drums
just reflect the new world shot guns ...awesome
scene for modern world to me here ...maybe the
sadness I feel today just reflected by this music
great arrangement and mixing ..and vocation ..

awesome
maybe your best yet. that piano sounds perfect for the tune. i have a piano, and it's just easier to keep buying software piano's. which one is this? anyways I love everything about this, the melodies, the vibe, the found sounds, but that drumming is killing me. unreal.

Ah that piano. You might have heard it on some Beatles stuff. The piano used is called the Challen and it can be found in Propellerhead's Abbey Roads refill that includes several instruments from that studio. I'm not sure if the Beatles used that particular piano or not. The refill came with a really nice short book about all the instruments and their history and what songs they were used on. More info about the refill can be found here: http://www.propellerheads.se/products/refills/ark/index.cfm?fuseaction=get_article&article=what_is_it

Thanks for the awesome comment Michael! I initially had the drum 'solo' a bit longer but shortened it (my wife thought it was 'too much'). I also toyed with the idea of making the panning more extreme but settled on the version you hear.

aha
i was interested in that abbey road thing, I think there is a non propellerhead version that is supposed to be good to. probably wise to edit the drum "solo" and curb the instincts to go crazy with the panning; could've turned a great song into a gimmicky song.

whoa.
drums are brilliant. they get under the skin, they don't let you relax. sounds and piano lull you into an idea and then the drums come back and kill it. this tune gave me the feeling i get when i'm trying to write or make music and i just don't have it going on at the moment, how frustrating that is, you just want to kick the dog. great execution of concept dude.

Mad Consideration
Sounds like a composition and I can't sing the melody...
Must be modern plumbing... enjoyed the little drums trying to be bongos...and the piano wandering pushed things along.
Funny about the bass frequencies being so open... your decisions here are unique, can't ask for more!

not so creepy...
...with the picture of einstein. Maybe if you had a link to the creepy old Tool videos, this would sound dark. anyways, cool. I also saw you commented that you shortened the drum solo due to your wife's advice... now would a true 'mad man' submit their creation to the opinion of others?!?! Aha!!!!
