Description:
A symphonic piece, with vocals sun by 'Boris' from Apple Speech. I am planning to re-do this track without the vocals also, as they make it kind of silly... For now... Set sail on the open seas, but watch out for them pirates! YARRRRRR!!!

Lyrics:

I cruise along with a blade in my hand

out in the deep blue sea

I walk around with a blade in my hand

because I'm truly free

chorus:

I am a mighty pirate

I hunt for buried treasure

Back off don't even try it

I'll cut your throat with pleasure

I fight many with a blade in my hand

I never show any fear

I eat my food with a blade in hand

I also drink lots of beer

(chorus x2)

Currayzee! &mdash 12/20/04 - 08:55:32 PM
Finally got around to checking out your stuff.
The drums in the beginning initially gave me the
impression of a Native American raindance, but then
the snare kicks in and lo and behold, "Avast ye lilly
livered, yellow bellied, scurvy land lovers!!" The
"Boris" voice over was an unexpected touch, but
made for a funny song that for sure. The lyrics are
funny too, especially this part, "I eat my food with a
blade in hand, I also drink lots of beer". Brilliant!
Very recognizable pirate theme, this is great classic
soundtrack material, ripe with energy and whimsy.
This is freaking hilarious! How'd you get Boris to sing
like that?

Rated: 9-7-7-8.

What a kick! &mdash 12/20/04 - 09:53:57 PM
This is an unexpected rib tickler. A full flavored panorama
of sound. Mighty fine work, matey.

yes, HOW DID YOU DO IT? &mdash 12/20/04 - 11:58:31 PM
Boris has achieved new heights as an accomplished
vocalist on this tune. How in the heck did you do it???

I'd love to hear a whole CHOIR of these computer voices!

Excellent accompaniment, very well-balanced. I enjoyed
the ocean sounds! The drums were tastefully done; the
snare gave this piece a martial, pirate sorta feel. Very
effective.

I liked the "house of the rising sun" theme at the end. Very
symphonic, extremely well produced. Lovely sound.

The image of a PowerBook wearing a skull&crossbones
pirate hat keeps swimming before my eyes. Please make it
stop!

Great job on this.

Oh, and as for the choir with voices... mixing too many of these voices
doesn't sound very good at least from my past experience... the sound gets
kinda choppy/clicky.. and controling the volume between each voice isn't an
easy task... at least it was like that with SoundMaker... perhaps new editing
software will have some way to fix those impurities... We'll see :D

O_o &mdash 12/21/04 - 05:44:38 AM
Thanks for all the nice comments!

I use ancient software listed above in the song profile...
Soundmaker is THE sound editor IMHO. It is a much more
professional version of the old sound editor
"SoundEffects" which was also wonderful. Speechlab is
really old but it lets you do some of the coding for apple
speech (you can fine tune it a little bit) to achieve slightly
different sounding voices. It came with a program I
bought a long time ago... I think it was called Kaboom.
SoundMaker has a very nice time stretch and pitch
modification plugin. There is a program called simple
song I believe, which does similar things, but its very
limited. Originally this song had Fred and Boris, they were
both mighty pirates... but Boris just sounded mightier
than Fred did.. well Fred sounded kinda wimpy, so I didn't
leave him in.

Be sure to check out my other apple speech vocal song
"Halloween"... featuring good ol' Fred. You'll see what I
mean by sounding wimpy once he hits the high notes.
Glad you all enjoyed this!

House of the Rising Androids &mdash 01/11/05 - 06:47:13 PM
House of the Rising Sun meets the Conquest of the
Caribbean. Moody, with nice choral textures, sparse and
controlled pacing, and solid progressions. That singer
can sure hit his low notes! For me, it could've
transformed into the instrumental section a bit earlier.
Interesting swells in that section. Nice flute. Well
orchestrated game sounds, nice use of the pallet.

vocals on your own &mdash 01/16/05 - 10:59:57 AM
it is my personal belief that you should just sing the vocals yourself over the song. 1. ifyou don't feel like a good singer, who cares? listen to my stuff... i think i'm pretty much an awful singer, but I also am not a pop star so I don't have to sing well, 2. pirates are definitely not good singers, so you could even purposely mess up.

it might even be funny to sing-say it all. YES this was awesome.

That was hilarious!.... yet ominous as well. you need to
get that Boris a record deal, heh!

However, then the song ends with a very lucious
arrangement of synths that was very well done,
reminiscent of Vangelis!

Way to go!

You've now joined the ranks of Marylin Manson,
Apoptygma Berzerk and probably some others. Go

Whee! er, Arr!
