Description

I have to give credit to my niece Emily and her roommate Roxy for the fantastic sultry vocals on this. Thank you both.

The rest of the music is all me... There are a ton of guitar tracks, a piano track, a bass track, effects tracks... I think I was up to 28 in use tracks when this was done. I hope you enjoy it.

Close your eyes and imagine...

The scene is downtown Hong Kong, at night, as the opening Bond guitar riff starts, Bond walks down a street then into a hotel lobby in tall circular building. He rides the elevator up to the penthouse nightclub. Bond is dressed to kill in a black suit and tie, he towers above most of the people he passes.

As he exits the elevator he walks past a beautiful tall American blonde girl who locks her longing eyes on him. He appears to not even notice her as he walks past, his eyes searching the crowded club she begins to sing almost to him:

And you never say goodbye

Bond spots then follows an oriental man out the glass doors to the roof top patio deck. The singer, her eyes still locked on Bond sings again:

You take my love…
You take my love…
And you never say goodbye

The oriental man knows he's being followed, he takes one look at Bond, says something into a high tech cell phone, then runs at full speed for the edge and jumps off the building…

Bond rushes to the edge gun in hand, just then a helicopter rises from below the building and the man is hanging on the skid. Bond fires four shots at the departing helicopter as it banks away… He watches the helicopter depart into the night as the song begins its beat.

Holstering his gun, Bond slowly re-enters the nightclub and the tall blonde girl begins to sing, her eyes following Bond as he tries to cross the mobbed dance floor. Strobe lights make it difficult to see. There are writhing, moving bodies everywhere.

As she sings Bond is swept up in the dancing thick nightclub crowd and he struggles towards the elevator but is forced back out on the roof top patio. The night club singer watches as he exits the glass doors back out to the rooftop patio and she sings:

And you never say goodbye

As he straightens his tie outside the helicopter reappears in a fly-by and a shot from a large caliber weapon is fired at Bond as he dives for cover…

The scene fades to the typical Bond movie with multiple silhouetted dancing girls and swirling wild colors as Bond walks through the multicolor night with gun in hand and the tall blonde lead singer, one of the silhouetted girls sings:

The future remains unknown
events will go untold
and the world
Will never be the same

The life we used to know
this time we must let go
and the world
Will never be the same

And you never say goodbye
And you never say goodbye

The scene remains in swirling colors as the girls in silhouettes continue to dance then pull guns and a gun fight erupts as the song slowly fades…

Great pitch, Mark....
I can totally see it.... Not only should they use this in a Bond film, they should hire you to consult on the script...

Very neo-post-Bondian guitars, both in terms of tone and in terms of the line you came up with, nice underpinning with the piano, and the vocals manage to get sultry-with-vulnerability really well...

Very catchy, very much a tune that stays in one's head once heard, and I think that's what you're going for in a Bond theme...

So hot its cool
Very evocative, really paints a picture of Bond and a nightclub (the singer's "atmosphere" was sort of small-room-ish, but there was lots of space for the instruments, making the vox more intimate.) Very dark haunting music, I love it... and I am assuming you wrote this, wrote the lyrics, PLAYED the guitars, and mixed it... wow, THAT is impressive, and the result glimmers like a Hong Kong high-rise at night.

Yes I wrote, played everything... I even played the opening Bond rift which took some practice to get it right and I kept messing it up and finally I played one good one and looped it... sigh... I played the piano and bass as well... Up pretty much all me except for the fantastic vocal work by the girls...

Works well as a narrative.
I like this piece not only for the piece itself, but also because the fact that you chose hong kong gave it a very "local" feel to me. Hong Kong is a very appropriate setting for a spy episode. The vocals are done perfectly for the melody, the reverb is just right. The piano goes well with the helicopter. Nice pan on that btw. You have the bond feel to it. One thing that I find well done is the garageband guitar. It's very hard to make the garageband guitar work well. I really like it when the vocals hit with the piano and the drums. Very good. I really honestly like this. Are you interested in a remix?

The Bond thing...
...I get it.
But mainly I just like the composition itself...and the wonderful mix of so many tracks. It all sounds quite clear to my ears. Kudos to Emily and her friend. Great vocals. This is quite an ambitious song with so many instrumental elements, sound effects, pannings...You somehow keep all of that together beautifully...It is really quite remarkable. I know how hard it is to do that, and you have done it all so well here.

I can see the fluid forms with
coloured silhouettes of people as they glide across the screen with the opening credits to the film.

What a production Mark! You talented fellow - and the vocals from your niece and and her roommate are wonderful. There is an intimacy here that I think works well as with all the Bond openers.

I hope you still stay in touch after you move to Hollywood!

Excellent song! This really is up there with the classic Bond theme songs - from the aggressive guitars to that flawless, heartbroken "and you never say goodbye" line sung so hauntingly by the girls. This is the real deal, pristine production that doesn't blur the bite of danger.

You walked away with this one, Mr M, and I for one will enjoy listening to this one on my iPod for some time. Thanks for the ride!

Mark, this is a nice piece of cinema and I do love this year's Bond Girls Emily and Roxy. I might consider reducing the lo-end on their vocals. That may a matter of taste but I think it would add more clarity and room between the tracks in a tune that's already very clean... while removing some lo freq's that aren't needed (but for some possible harmonics, I guess but I'm no expert on this stuff). Well done from the first helicopter to the last hail of bullets.
