Description
A song for someone I once knew...

Special thanks to Andrew Paulsen, who wrote and played the trumpet part. He's a very good friend of mine and a great musician. We used to play and write quite a bit when he was living in the States. This is our first on-line endeavor since he moved to France. Cheers, Andrew...

Guitars and Vox: Bob Prince

The Other Side
Music and Lyrics by Bob Prince ©2009

It's four o'clock AM
on a funky street she stands:
stark pool of a streetlight,
woman fishin' for a man.

She's lookin' pretty good,
but for the swellin' 'round her eye.
She packs a can of pepperspray
for the disprespectful guys.

Girl's gotta make some money...
feed the tracks she's tryin' to hide.
'Cuz there's better times ahead,
waitin' on the other side.

Now, the business took a hit
when the economy went bad.
Base price was once 20,
now for 10 she can be had.

Thinks back to better days
before daddy left the scene.
Flicks her cigarette
as a Mercedes flicks it's beams.

And after fat cat john has taken
lady for a ride,
she makes her cash sweet poison...
takes off for the other side.

The sun sets thru the window,
woman wakes and has a cup.
Hand's a little shaky.
Signs are there...she knows what's up.

She thinks she's gotta stop,
but she can't imagine when.
So daddy's little girl
heads out for the street again.

And as the cars roll by,
shapely feelings frozen dry,
she raises sail and sets a course
for the other side.

Wow Bob
This is sad, but beautifully done. Life can be tough when you're a junky on the streets. Glad you told this story Bob, and Andrew. Thanks for the wakeup call.

There but for the Grace of God, go I.

Bob, stellar mix. The Trumpet is so sweet man. When it stretchs a little at around the 3 minute mark and your doing those cool harmonics in the background..wow..that peaked. Love the conversational vocal.

I wasn't sure...
...about the EBow at the 3:00 mark, when I thought about it, at first. Thought it might get in the way of the trumpet (which I knew I wanted from the gitgo). But I gave it a shot and liked it. So it stayed.

Thank you

and now for something....
completely different.

very cool arrangement Bob. and the chorus effect on the acoustic sounds perfect for the story line. the trumpet and the brief ebow work very nicely here as well.

Stunning
and emotive playing. Chilled, and laid back track, with great lyrics. That trumpet is fitting to the tune.

Love the song, and that smoky trumpet part adds atmosphere that is perfect for this song! This is without a doubt a great song, beautifully produced. Fantastic work here, Bob.

Miles...
...is the standard, for sure.

When I first sent the basic track to Andrew, I told him I heard the muted trumpet, exclusively...but asked him to go with instinct and, if he had the time, put down some clear track ideas. What you hear on his first solo, here, was so beautiful, I just had to go with it. After hearing it, now, I think it gives a sweet added dimension to the tune.

Thanks, Clark. Have a good one...

ouch
This is really amazing. My only critique would be that while listening in headphones the sudden cut between the two guitar "spaces" is noticeably jarring (just in a couple places, e.g. at 0:46... minor nit.) But the guitar playing and horn work are breathtaking, as is the music itself. Your spoken voice on this is really nice, well delivered. And I must say, from one dad to another, the lyrics send a chill down my spine.

Drakonis

I am...
...a charter member of the Universal Nitpicker Society, Eduard. And I know exactly the spots you're talking about (and a few more, probably, lol).
I decided that I wanted that bit of a "jar" in those spots, specifically to paint the picture of her being pulled back to "reality"...but not too gently. Took me awhile to decide on it, though. I tried out a couple of softer dynamic shifts as well as cutting out notes, altogether, in two of the spots. But kept coming back to the original concept and decided to stick to it.
Glad you liked this, Eduard. And, as always, I always appreciate your comments and inputs.
Best,
Bob

Resonant...
...your friend Andrew definitely listened to 'Kind of Blue' once or twice, and that's not a bad thing... Nice tone and phrasing...

Neat main acoustic riff....

The whole tune's construction reminds me a bit of some of Bruce Cockburn's spoken-against-music tracks, especially 'Charity of Night'...

Great lyrics and very evocative.

mood setter
Your painting of this desperate life is dealt with in a most artistic way.
Nothing like an echoey muted trumpet to conjure those late night stirrings of the lonely and callous city streets.
Colorful.

Bravo and encore!
Love that chilly opening guitar.

It really sets the mood. Kudos to Andrew for that awesome muted trumpet (and for his playing throughout).

Speaking the lyrics was a good choice. This is a story that needs to be TOLD.

Yes...Bravo and encore!

Be well friend!

The intro...
...was going to be another piece, originally. I was sitting around, looking to develop it from what's here. Then I got frustrated and started playing this piece, which I'd almost finished. Really liked how they worked together. And it's the feel of that intro that got me into the lyrics...

Thanks, Micheal...

I think I understand Bob...
Sometimes my conscious mind thinks I need to play one thing, but my subconscious has it's own agenda. When the latter prevails, things tend to turn out better.

Also, most of my songs are written as you describe. First comes the music, and then come the lyrics EVOKED by the music. I think only one of them had the lyrics come first. Only twice have the music and lyrics emerged simultaneously.

I have no control over the process, nor do I seek it. It would be a disaster for me to try to write and play from the Left Brain!

Anyway, as I said above: "Bravo and encore"!
