Stars and Dust (space challenge)

Description
I have been really busy at school and with a reallly sick kid, so I didn't get to work on this as much as I would have liked, but turned out okay I guess. In my story, the favorite place in space is back on Earth; our hero is literally alone in the universe and wishes to be back home. Not the most original story line, but works for me. I resisted the urge to use synths on this one as it felt too obviously "space." instead i went with a lot of effects on the guitar.

Lyrics
i'm a frightened little man
in a shiny metal disc
i'm a tiny little man
in a place that don't exist
floating alone
floating

everyone i've ever known
on a planet far below
it's so hard to understand
the distance that's between us
floating alone
floating

there's nothing here for me
nothing left to see
but stars and dust
and junk from space
there's nothing left for me
nothing here to see
but stars and dust
and junk from space
floating
floating

i'm so very far away
from the people that i love
the sun is shining, this i know
but it's cold and i can't feel it
floating alone
floating

there's nothing left to see
nothing here for me
but stars and dust
and junk from space
there's nothing here for me
there's nothing left to see
but stars and dust
and junk from space
floating
floating

i'm so very far away
from the people that i love
and the sun is out today
but i'm cold and i can't feel it
i'm a frightened little man
in a shiny metal disc
i'm a tiny little man
in a place that don't exist
and i'm floating
floating
floating away
i'm floating
floating
floating away
i'm floating
floating
floating away

Thanks Micheal
for reminding me that there is really no place like our dear mother Earth. At least not any we've found yet. But even if we do find "Earth 2" it still won't be home.

Great lyrics and excellent vocals and harmonies Micheal. Great work, Kudos.

really glad you liked this one. funny, a couple of comments have mentioned Lennon (really nice compliment BTW), but I don't hear it myself. I think it may be the little vocal pads before the choruses. I was actually thinking Bowie on this track. Thanks so much for the listen and the kind words.

such a great track Michael. The vocal especially kills. The doubling with the guitars sounds too cool.

may i say Beatlish which i offer in the highest regard

stoked you like this. I actually wrote a different chorus melody before I had written anything else, and tracked the song without a scratch vocal. after I did the guitars, I liked that part so I just used that as the vocal melody (the other one wasn't working). Thanks so much for stopping by.

was trying to get the same vibe as some of those Bowie songs with a whole bunch of odd voices on the choruses, but ended up with this. Found some really wild effects buried deep in Podfarm, will have to keep digging. Thanks for the props.

How cool is that
You seem to improve with stress, my friend. Can't imagine making a hit song like this under such circumstances, but you manage to do it - time after time. Kudos! This is really excellent.

Take care of yourself and the kid. Peace.

cool
this has a real longing to it. good call not using synths. you managed to capture the space feel without them really well. love the lyrics and vocal delivery, and of course those BG vox and crazy guitars. very michael marquesen. awesome production too. you've gotten oodles better in that department it seems. is it logic?

thanks. this was hard for me to mix. the noise guitars were either too loud, or just sounding like high end noise. tried to EQ them so they were a bit different from each other and spread them way apart. thanks for the kind words, I'm probably getting a bit better at mixing, but Logic makes it easier since I don't have to spend all my time figuring out work arounds. production question: why does it seem like everything is always in the mid ragnge? drums, vocals, guitars? it's all in the same area EQ wise. I find myself cutting off more and more bottom end on tracks. what a nightmare, i wanna take a class.thanks for listening to me rant.

Exactly
You've captured the essence of space travel. It's lonely, and we're not really cut out for it. Similar to the idea that my other alter-ego was working on for the Space Challenge. Very well done. Yeah, it turned out "OK." Hahaha. It's a gem.

People say Lennon...
... I say Bowie. This is awesome Michael. Evokes DB at his finest moments in 1970-72 period. Excellent vocals and beautiful guitar work. This song could sit on Space Oddity (or even Heroes) and dwarf some of the compositions on those discs.
Love it.

aha
i was thinking Bowie as well. in the guitars and the chorus structure. I love those records, Bowie pretty much altered my life forever when i was a teen. He always had cool band members, hooks, and was weird too. perfect blend in my mind. thanks so much for listening.

its the psychedelic 60's in space! Man you did a great job of creating a mood with this song - it feels totally retro and very cool. Interesting use of harmonies throughout the song, and the lyrics are cool too. Nice work - thanks for the share ! Sig

thanks man, glad you appreciate this one. a lot of the noisy trashiness is intentional (and some isn't), but I was into the badly EQed sound of the guitar at the beginning. it was my scratch guitar track and isn't even ran through an amp, just straight into the mac. thought it sounded crappy in a good way. the drums weren't sitting the way I wanted them too, so ran them through some distortion and they seemed more appropriate. thanks so much for listening to this one.

I'm always a fan of the crazy guitar stuff you do, but what really pops to me is that crispy clean guitar that sweeps every two measures. Sounds SOOOOO good. Impressive.

Oh ya
Takes me back. What a great song and so well conceived. Chord progression in the chorus is cool. You were right to put the effects into the guitars. It is more in alignment with the rest of the style of the piece. And Feter's right - I hear the Beatles in here - or John Lennon anyway.

When is your Guitar Hero release for this one??

Peace,
Doug

Under the circumstances Michael, you've done a great job. Certainly a more human take than some of the other, more technological, tunes (like mine ;-)

So Much
Of everything here I think it's brilliant, truly.
Something quirky and new mixed up with very early Floyd.
Love the lyrics
'Stars and dust and junk from space'
brilliantly put
Yes we are tiny little men, however much we want to think otherwise.
Yeah Bowie altered my life for ever back then as well, thanl heavens
I really love this

Time travel in a tin can...
You are such a danged awesome talent... what a cool tune and lyric, takes me back to a Beatles/Bowie/ELO era, with a touch of metaphor in the lyric, just my style. The guitar effects were awesome on this, weird but not too "spacey", worked a treat.
