Description
i started the music to this 4 or 5 months ago and left it unfinished and had pretty much forgotten about it until i opened up the wrong folder and rediscovered it this last weekend. i thought i could turn it into a space thing. so i finished it up and spent a couple nights running through a bunch of unusual effects. about the only thing that didn't get effected was the bass and the rock drum parts.

Lyrics
MAYDAY - mj space challenge 2009

woke from a frozen state
all systems go
3-2-1
final destination
planet x unknown
how could we know
a change in our fate

can anyone hear me
s.o.s mayday
can anyone hear me
please come in

lost all radio contact
we are on our own
lost all coordinates
no returning home
these stars look all the same
blackness closes in
emergency beacon has misfired
no control

can anyone hear me
s.o.s mayday
can anyone hear me
please come in

the oxygen will soon deplete
getting hard to breathe
mary panicked, jettisoned her pod
the rest of us took it hard
ancient astronauts
we have become
never to see another sun

can anyone hear me
s.o.s mayday
can anyone hear me
please come in
can anyone hear me

awesome
love the acoustic in there. really cuts through nicely. those sfx have a real paranoid sound to them which I think suits the song really well. and you must know i LOVE the slide guitar part. awesome space song, vic.

i searched for effects to put on the guitars so it would kind of sound like it was breaking down like the spacecraft. ring modulators and spectral gates can produce some cool stuff

Hi Feter
one reason why this song wasn't completed 5 months ago is because i did not want it to sound like my usual stuff. i think the effects give it a eery trapped in space feel.

Wow!
Glad I checked in today (for a small sabbatical from my sabbatical...lol)!

Too freakin' COOL! The keys sound so Moody Blues...Just love it. And the effects are all right where they should be.

A guy could get addicted to ear-candy like this bro!

Be well!

I'm glad to see you posted bamboo today.

there are 2 keyboard synths on top of all the other heavily effected guitars. just some chording to smooth it out. i started the song some time ago and i had to relearn the silly thing in order to finish it up.

Wow Vic
this is spooky, but excellent. Kind of paints a bleak picture for the future Astronauts, but then it's bound to happen someday.

Love the music and the kind of droning vox on this, it so suits the theme of hopelessness.

Great track and story Vic, Kudos my friend,

love this one, very original and perfectly adapted to the subject, so realistic that I imagine you in the space by listening to this song. Now, I begin to wonder if you don't come from another planet, with this so unique style !

This is Major Tom to...
Do you know why pilots say "mayday" when they have critical emergency?

"Spacey" might be the correct word to describe this tune.

As usual, love the tasty guitars. So many cool things going on here. You know I'd dig this, right?

Hi Dave
i think mayday comes from some french word meaning come help me, i think.

this was a good excuse to try and incorporate some trippy effects.

Trippy!
Love the Ancient astronaut line, I was watching Planet of The Apes last night and that line and this song reminded me of Taylor's journey. I like the bass sound on this helps anchor the sound nicely. The key boards are perfect, I see the git took a back seat on this one, good decision, the aura of this is complete IMHO.

Thanks for the DL Vic!

there is more guitar on here then meets the ears. a couple tracks i added some extreme effects that produced weird synth sounds, ended up you can't even tell that a guitar is at the root of it.

landing on the planet of apes could make for a cool follow up.

Major Tom or Zephram Cochrane?
Or the Space Family Robinson?

Either way, glad this one didn't stay lost in the space of your musical to do list. A great tune to get lost among the stars with!

Trouble in the cosmos
Solid performance here describing a pretty ugly situation. The intentional distortions make me think of getting disoriented as the oxygen slowly runs out. All the elements in the guitars, synths, drums and of course the great vocal lines work together most effectively (and professionally too I might add).

The fade out I find to be especially poignant in this piece.

Thanks! and
Be well,
Doug

The details here are overwhelming. That bass line is driving the production perfectly! About 2:30 the interlude featuring "slide guitar" is gorgeous.

yeah i was thinking of it as a machine, by using the effects in a subliminal kind of way especially with the effected drum pattern in the verse section and one of the effected guitar tracks.

once again you've created a really memorable chorus coming off some seriously interesting verses layered with effect and cool chord changes. Big time production. Love it.

there is less going on in the chorus then the verse section. kind of a release the tension spot. i wasn't sure if this would of been done in time for the event.

can you hear me Captain Vic?

I can.

Vicster... man, you got a good one here. Atmospherics pumping throughout... everything separated nicely... all parts distinct... your vocal is really the star surrounded by a cast of great supporting characters. Simply a satisfying song to listen to.

Can you hear me...

originally i had the vocals going through some other effects that would make it sound like it was coming through a distant radio. changed my mind at the last moment, you had to listen carefully to hear the words. I'm breaking up now................trk...........sha...........

can anyone hear me?
after william safire died they released the speech that he wrote for Nixon to be read in the case that the appollo astronauts were stranded on the moon. it was strangely beautiful. i guess the fascination with dying in space is like that of being buried alive, same feeling only better scenery. and oh yeah the tune is great. as always the lead has a ton of personality, seems like another voice. i like the "mary panicked" line. and the creepy backups are great. lastly really like the bouncy, happy bass in the chorus after each line - great contrast with the subject matter.

Hey Craig
i remember them releasing that speech a while back.

i don't know how mary sneaked in, i had one of those moments that i started writing the lyrics all the way through, about 10 to fifteen minutes with a few lines left over. that's a rarity for me most of the time.

what a bass beat...
in fact, what IS it about that initial Bassline, sounds awesome and slightly familiar, but just melts right into something new. "No control..." The storyline weaves a claustrophobic/compelling heart-stopping nightmare, awesome guitar/music work too.
