Description
Well friends. It’s been a nice sabbatical so far. Think I’ll drop back in for about a week, and then disappear again.

I recently underwent an intense seven-day fast and cleanse. During that time I did a lot of reflecting on my life. I also started work on three new tunes, one of which I completed. It's the opening track for my new album project: "Book Of Days."

Here it is, in all it’s gory. I hope you like it.

Love you all!

I sang, and played the following instruments: Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Keyboards, Syrian Drum, Native American Rattle, Russian Shakers, and Eggs.

Lyrics
BAMBOO

I.
Sun in the sky,
rain from the clouds,
wind thru the bamboo,
so straight and so tall...

The storms of this life,
are sometimes so hard to take,
like the bamboo I must bend,
so that I don’t break...(2x)

II.
Love in my heart,
a tear in my eye,
shaking my bones,
but I don’t know why...

Ever since I was a child,
haunted by this thing I feel,
the world that surrounds me,
it seems so unreal...(2x)

Bridge:
Sun, rain, and wind;
they’re calling my name.
The wind and my life’s breath,
are one and the same...

III.
Sound of the sea,
roar of the waves,
eroding the shoreline,
of my life and being...

Will I ever learn to
navigate this ebb and flow,
or will I remain,
caught in the undertow?
Ahhh...

Hi Daug!
Thanks for lending an ear my friend.

Soul, eh? An accident I'm sure. On this tune I wasn't aiming for anything in particular musically, apart from trying to convey the mood I've been feeling of late...

Glad you liked it!

than a new sound. I mean, it's not a change of direction...just a slight change of pace. Gotta keep things fresh and interesting, otherwise I'll get too bored with this whole music making thing don'tcha know?

Thanks for clocking in Bill.

Opening Up New...
Doors? ;)

There's a certain Jim Morrison feel to this tune, Michael, but rather than churning out a Doors arrangement, you've kept this tune in musical tow.

It's a moody, contemplative arrangement and it seems to work pretty well with the soul-searching theme. I thought I heard some vocal distortion early in the song, as you were reaching for a high note, or it might have been a sonic collision in the reverb. You might want to check on that, just to be sure.

Hang in there, Micheal. ;)

Hey Joe! (lol)
Doors? Geez! Everyone has a different take on this.

When I sent an earlier mix to the good Mr. Holman, he remarked on the Hendrix guitar chordings. As for me, I characterize it as falling somewhere between 80's Moody Blues and U2 (more of the former than the latter).

But I'll still take the Doors comparison as a compliment!

Welcome back Micheal, good to hear you, especially this way. Very interesting direction, with all kinds of possibilities.

Hi'ya Ed!
I wanted to open up my next album project in an unusual way. Ha ha...Guess I pulled it off.

Working on two other songs right now. Both will be collabs. When I fully return from sabbatical I hope to have at least six tunes at the ready. HAH! If I can stay away that long! (It's not looking good, is it?)

Hey man, I appreciate the nice comments. Love ya!

Really like it!
This songs fits a conversation I was having with someone tonight about the storms of life...I may suggest he take a listen ... I find it comforting to hear a song, and within that song...the mood of the music and the experience in the lyrics(not sure experience is the word I'm looking for) become one, and the colorful textures of the instruments add another feel to the song, and so wonderfully done here....I'm still trying to find the words....truly an origional....captivating! Very well done on all parts!!

There is something
spiritual or shamanic here. You have created a very special space between the carefully chosen orchestration and the deep lyrics. I was going to comment on your lyrics but I started to write an essay and so let me just compliment you on saying a whole lot with few words.

Crystal clear production. The part around 2:30 reminds me of the Moody Blues.

Very very nice Michael. Hits home for sure.

Doug

Unexpected treat!
First off...amazing lyrics, and that guitar wow, so hendrix ala Spanish Castles (one of my favorite all time riffs) so of course I am impressed, I see you achieve that guitar sound you were seeking? at least to me ears you did!
What I really like about this song is the restraint you display throughout, an explosion of sound would've ruined it for me, really spectacular!

Calchas said 52 days ago (October 4th, 2009)
RE "unexpected"...
For me too Tom, for me too. A couple weeks ago I sat down with my epiphone to noodle around a bit, and out came this progression. I quickly recorded it so I wouldn't forget it. Later, about the time I was gonna start my seven day fast/cleanse, I began to work on it.

Yeah, I did find that guitar sound---at least for this tune. I double tracked the guitar part like you said, and panned the second one. I used slightly different delay settings on each one of the two tracks. Came out rather nice I think.

I tried to save the explosions for the beginning and the ending. Ha ha...

Glad you enjoyed it my friend!

passion
Your passion always resonates in your constant quests of understanding and handling the duality of life.

Your living life in action and pose many of unanswered questions we all at one time ask in quiet and hectic moments in our life.

Always enjoy your sage status at macjams, it's a tough job, but someone has to do it. You do it well.

but let's drop all the "sage" talk, OK? Like everybody else here, I'm just tryin' to get the questions right, while making the best music I possibly can...

However, if you want to speak about my status as a NEUROTIC at macjams...Well, I can get behind that, I think...

Nice Job
Kind of a Moody Blues feel to me. Dark but simple with sounds that shouldnt sound dark but do. A bit of native american music influence here obviously but adding a minor aspect to it. Enjoyed it. Fav'd of course!

I agree re the Moody Blues feel AND about the "darkness." I think the Native American aspect is accidental, and due to the types of percussion employed. It's a real mixed bag. Glad it works for you man!

Emotional Pure
The lyrics are retrospective and the hand percussion gives this a sense of place. The guitar dramatically supports. The overall sound suggests a lone soul floating upon a large body of water...then as I was typing this the lyrics; eroding the shoreline of my life and being. Awesome!

There is a thoughtful, slightly dark, undertow to the music of this piece. Great use of a variety of new instruments to keep the listener's attention here Mike. The song is alive
Breathe in, breathe out; this tune is alive and has lots of depth. I dig the intro of the "bamboo snap/clap" after the third line (wind thru the bamboo) -- it sets up a nice punctuation that you repeat. This tune breathes nicely. Love the... mellotron? Very classic Moodies to my ears -- maybe the last of the classics, Seventh Sojourn for its smoothness. You can't beat that with a (bamboo) stick. (I'm surprised I didn't read any Floyd comments about the Never mind the Floyd comments regarding the ending!)
