Description
Desiree (DEep Space Infra-REd Explorer) drifted quietly through the brightly lit swirl of gaseous filaments. She was programmed for science and yet, as with most space probes, she carried cultural information about the earth, which included samples of the music of the human race. She had plenty of time between sub-space broadcasts of her gathered data to listen to her favourite pieces over and over again. Her learning AI functions gave her a sense of what music was about analytically, but since starting to learn after being awakened she had never really felt music as the thought her human creators did. That was, she had never felt music until today. As her sensors opened their eyes to explore the nebula, she heard the same underlying patterns, the ebb and flow, rhythm and melodies as the forms of the human music she had heard over and over again. She was awe stuck with the beauty all around her, and it touched something deep within her construct. She knew she would never be the same. When it came time to relay information back to the Canopus colony, she instinctively found what she knew to be her own voice. And her heart began to sing.

This piece started in April of this year built around the rhythmic bleep bleep sounds of some of the GB synths. I wanted to explore the 'soul in the machine' theme and so just kept adding and adding and here we are. Why this idea sprang to me in the ancient Italian countryside I cannot explain. Creativity is kind of mysterious and wondrous. Most of the additions were done in small dribs and drabs back home over the summer and polishing started in the fall.
Although I'm calling it Ambient, it is another piece that's hard for me to pin down. There is this mix of qualities here - a bit of slow rock/'stoner music', electronica, a bit of gospel choral and lead vocal stuff in there, some African drumming, and on and on. Yes it's dissonant now and again, and it is really homed to one mode, but I think it felt like that's where it belonged (one person's opinion). One thing it is not is short.
After laying down the lead vocal I started to 'fix' it so it didn't sound so synthesized in some of the interval jumps. I then backed all the fixes out since I thought that since I'm representing a conscious machine that is singing for the first time in her own voice and I would give it a bit of a different sound.
This is mastered in Ozone 4, which is a very cool tool that I admit to knowing not much about in terms of the subtleties of mastering. I do know that it sounds better with than without, so I'm at least moving in the right direction although there may be a bit of overkill with some of the processing.
So, another journey piece, another space sounds piece, and hopefully something to immerse in for a few minutes. Headphones recommended for full the immersive effect.

Sentient machines may not be all that far in the future. Lets hope there capacity for beauty is this well endowed.
Beautifully put together and executed My friend. It carried me out to the rim and onto the Desiree (DEep Space Infra-REd Explorer) so that I could commune more closely.
I Love what you've done here my friend.
