Description
Ever played Civilization II by Sid Meier? One of the goals is to be the first civilization to reach (a planet near) our nearest star Alpha Centauri. And that is the mission this piece is supposed to be about. No idea if I succeeded or even if the mission succeeded - maybe you can tell me?

It is made in Logic Studio 8 so it is not very creative, but I guess it sounds a little nice here and there. I just can't seem to find my way in this HUUUUGE program...

One of the FX files used was recorded on board MS Romantika, which took me and some work mates over to Riga in Latvia on a cenference trip in September. (The sound at 0.32 e.g. is a twitching muscle in my arm while lifting up the MacBook to record the rather noisy fan system ;-)

I had some serious problems setting up a nice story for the song, didn't know how to go on or end it, but found some nice space loops to finish it up with. So the first half is all me, the second more spacey half is made up of "loops" or FXs, drones etc.

Artwork from Civilization II...

Hope you enjoy, even if not top notch :-)

Heading for Alpha Centauri
Spacey ..spheric ..and has alot of layers ..
its like a prog work on Jean Michael Jarre ..
good job ..thnx alot for sharin !!!!
Henke said 43 days ago (October 8th, 2009)
Thank you!
That's a very kind comment, and I am sorry for the late answer - been sort of busy this week.

Jarre, eh? Well maybe a couple of sounds in there. The tap tap rythm thingy in the second part is a Tangerine Dream sound, though, I think. A bit like Ricochet part 2 at about 5 minutes. (Listening now, it's not that! much alike, but still...)

Take care.

Well I like it, it sounds very good to me
As I write that I'm just now getting into the synth part about a third of the way in, and they sound wonderful too. And now the beginning of the drones and effects. Still sounds very creative Henke.
Tell me, did you ever make it to Alpha Centuri's worlds ? Sounds like you were well on you way, just before your heart quit.

Great track, you and Logic are getting along better than you think my friend. I'm very impressed

Ed

Very kind words. And, well, I can hear some positive sides to this piece, and much thanks to Logic too, it's just that I don't have control over it. In Garageband I feel I can have more of a vision and make that come true. In Logic I'll have to be lucky, and find some good sounds that happen to fit into the piece. If you know what I mean... And speaking of creative, I think you did a far better job on your entry - very impressive work there!

And did I get to AC? In the game, yes, many times. In the song - hm, I am not so sure. (A "fun" thing is that the last words mumbled at the end is "nerve wrecking", I think...)

Thanks again for the listen and kind comment!

...for a movie of the same name.

Nice!

Glad to hear it. Would need a lot more mixing and tweaking in that case, but I like a bit of a story in the music, that's true.

Take care.

Really spaced out. Love it. Nice touch with the twitching muscle. The last part is particularly tense -- sounds like I'm in sick bay, and a lot of people are milling about in the hallway.

You're doing good with Logic 8. I'm glad you participated.

Of course, you know what happens to the crew, right? They break into seven factions, then fight each other for dominance on the new planet, which they call Planet. People. Sheesh.

Great work, sir.

You may have nailed the theme here
A sick bay! That was part of my problem with this, that I never really got the story behind the scenes, so to speak. The various elements just found their way into the piece without my active willing them to. Slightly frustrating feeling, that. Glad you found this out - and that you still liked it ;-)

So thanks again, for your own great entries too!

Take care.

Sci fi
Very spacy and palpable. I felt me here very confortable like a captain in his spaceship encircled by the fairy lights of the engins and the twinkling stars outside and all warmed
by the splendid decor and majesty of the spaceship navigating to Alpha Centaur.

I like your picture, Narad
Hope the captain is still well, and not the one in the sick bay (see above)...

Thank you for listening and commenting, always appreciated. I love your own postings, I often hear myself humming on the Festive procession these days...

Sounds like I'm jumping out through the airlock
into space. Wow, it's pretty vast out here. What are those colours and all the things whizzing by. You are quite the master of the vast soundstage and depth beyond depth. Epic story that is the microcosm of human adventuring! I'm so glad you joined the space race.

Be well,
Doug

I sure can see that picture too. But you are too generous about my abilities here. If you liked it, I was just being lucky... And for the most part it was fun to work on too, only would have been nice to discover the purpose of it before posting :-/

I have been enjoying your music as well as your comments lately. Often you say things I could willingly second...

So thank you very much and take care.

Authentic...
Regardless of the FX files, etc., YOU had to choose what you wanted for your soundscape, and I think you did an awfully convincing job of it. I don't know what the "story" is, but whatever it is will take some time in the telling. This is such a great prologue to the unfolding tale. Maybe you will take this even further.
Peace.

You too are too kind. But you are right that it needs polishing in the details and maybe even a longer version or sequel. At the moment I do not have the time or gusto to do it, but perhaps some day in a distant time in a far away galaxy... sorry, started to wander there for a moment... Anyway, I am glad and honoured by your presence on this page.

Peace.

Epic
For some reason, this reminds me of a soundtrack from one of those epic bible films! [Ben Hur?] Of course, your influences are there.

Whatever, it's very good. A great mix sir, you are certainly getting to grips with Logic.

Spartacus, actually...
One of few movies I've been to which actually featured a pause in the middle.

Anyway, thanks for believing in my music, if not in my words :-| Sure, I've found a few useful tools in Logic, e g the ability to move a sound 1/100(?) of a note or whatever in any direction within the list window. It's just that I don't feel creative in it, in a way that I do in GB nowadays. Not saying I "master" GB either, but comparatively...

Thanks for listening and commenting. Always much appreciated.

Take care.

Our nearest star
Besides the sun of course. I think you did a great job telling the story of a trip to AC. With regular changes to the soundscape to keep the traveler interested. Towards the end I feel like I am making my way through the ship's engineering section, or something...and now I am in a group of travelers waiting to depart the ship that has finally arrived at its destination. Nice job Henrik - thanks for the share. - Sig

Exactly!
You nailed it. It's just more fun working in GB for me. But the resulting sound in Logic is pretty awsome, so there is a temptation... I need to learn how to import GB projects into Logic for final mixing and exporting, I guess.

Thanks for the visit, much appreciated!

I'm very Van-Jealous!
Very nice work here Henrik... I've never played the game, but know it was a trend-setter. You may be lost inside Logic 8, but you seem to know your way around enough to make a very LARGE-sounding soundscape. Some of the oscillating-panning early on was a little dizzying, but the overall music and sound effects are very nice. Thanks for joining in the challenge, this is right up your quadrant! :-)

No need
to be van-jealous, music wise. You've sure prooved your worth in this genre, under several names too. (Sure got me there ;-/ ) Game wise is another thing. Civ is quite a nice one, you learn a lot about history (if you like), a bit of diplomacy etc. I usually play with an aim to keep my people happy, rather than just make war. I prefer a strong economy (so that I can buy big cities from my enemies). And so on. It's more or less the only slightly bigger game I ever play on the computer. OK, Cro-Mag Rally is another one ;-)

Anyway, I am glad you approved of the piece. Thanks for creating the stage for it...

Take care.

Suspended Animation
This is so cool!

I enjoyed this trip very much, because when I woke up there wasn't some slimy, creepy alien hovering over me like I was it's next meal. I woke up - released the pressurized chamber I'd spent the last 9 years in and found myself orbiting a beautiful planet and in need of a shave. But then everything changes.... The last 60 seconds makes me imagine that the rest of the crew is waking up and I think I hear them chatting and getting all excited about the planet, but then I realize that I'm still asleep and I have another 45 years before we reach our destination. The heart beat makes me feel lonely and a bit frightened because I'm not quite sure where I thought I was. I remember I'm in suspended animation so there's nothing I can do but drift back into a deep sleep and dream about that planet.

Mission accomplished
Mission accomplished...

I love it, when music is able to tell a story. Very nice sometimes oldschool synthi sounds, in some moments I am remembered to Jean Michel Jarre sound blankets...

Nice work with the loops, too...
It would be a great cinematic soundtrack.

Very nice to hear with headphones.

There are two hundred and fifty
people asleep on a transport ship auto piloted to Alpha Centauri. In stages, a dozen are awakened to check on general maintenance and the well being of the rest. They stay awake for only two weeks. They catch up with their friends and send messages back and forward. There are people awaiting them there. They reenter their cryo chambers. In another two months, a dozen others will do the the same things. So far, there haven't been any major problems. You are just getting awakened. And, it won't be a piece of cake for you. Thanks.
