Daphne w/ Andy Wigzell

Description
Dedicated to Mrs. Andy Wigzell

Andy Wigzell plays saxophone on this recording.

Part one: "Daphne" theme has a 5/4 pulse but is polytonal and polyrhythmic. The first half of the theme moves ever faster. There is a 40% deviation in the tempo over the first 21 bars. As the theme "slows down" an approximation of motion sickness is rendered. The chord structure adds to the idea of "twisting" and release of tension at the same time.
.
Part two: There is a brief fantasy with horns, piano, vibes and mixed percussion. This section features a trombone grouping carrying the melody, the chord situation from the theme is revisited in a clever manner. Andy's horn is perfect in this section! Bravo!

The last two movements feature Andy's improv. At various points the harmony includes minor chords, without fifths, a whole tone apart washing against each other yet Andy works all manner of nuance and feeling into three simultaneous lines, he continues this madness against some debauched orchestration during the outro...

I would like to thank you all for listening to my pieces at MJ. I will not post anymore ensemble jazz recordings at this fidelity.

Andy's work on Daphne deserved to be heard. Andy is a treasure in our community.

This piece attempts to capture the first moments in time when one falls in love. Daphne, in classical greek myth was a turned into a tree to save her from the lusty greek god Apollo. Daphne is also the highly medicated femme acompli in the Scoobbie Doo cartoons. My favorite Daphne is the flowing variety.

I hope you enjoy...

Smiling Daug
Daug,I appreciate you dedicating this to my wife. Perhaps this will help her tolerate me a little more with dealing with this Obsessive Musical Craziness. I also am thankful for your kind words but I must say that it is your conception of music that pulls and pushes me. This creates an awesome task and a tension that I love about your sound and what I love more about our collaborations. I imagine that Daphne and Orchid are toying with me and they giggle with whispers of mischief. My sax looks up at me and says, 'Are you going to let them get away with that... lets go, you moron!'

Feels like a live performance to me. Cool bass line in part one. The tempo changes and different movements surprised me in spots. The horn sounds like it's talking, but the meaning is beyond my grasp. Really well done, enjoyed this

The gradual tempo changes
are quite freaky. Does kind of disorient the listener but in a cool way. I got the sensation of standing on shifting sands and trying to tiptoe across it without falling in. Not exactly what you describe in your description but music is a personal experience, different to all. Nice job on this! Impressive piece of Jazz.

Out of
What I initially thought was a musical cacophony, emerged those heavenly sounding Manhattan Transfer type vocal harmonies and the following musical Jazz extravaganza.... how you get all this sorted in your mind to get down in reality boggles my mind, but it's all very clever stuff I must say... and the Jazz sax by Andy is magnificent and soulful, Love this, Regards M

This sounds great, the instruments are diverse yet all come together. Fusion, Toons Ville, Jazz, all this for Daphne!

Holy Smokes - this is a wild, wild ride! i can't begin to grok how this goes together, but it's very easy to hear the tremendous work that went into it. Andy's sax is extraordinary, and as i recently was telling him, i just marvel at his ability to hear how to play to music as complex and dynamic as this is. congrats to both!

Daphne
Karen, he gets "all crazy concentration dramatic", goes all snake-eyed ear focused and twists himself into this position completely behind the horn, he is invisible, from the bottoms of his feet the tone starts to arch up his frame and it explodes out of the business end of his horn. Just a disgusting thing when you think about it...
But we get the music! I really believe him when he says he has no idea where it comes from...he is just swinging his Godaxe and the trees are falling...that is the real music from the soul!

I'll certainly miss these tunes if this is the last
Really excellent free playing mixed with calculated backings and a wild imagination. I feel the spirit of Ornette in the adventure and in the plaintive quality of some of Andy's lines. Highly original and extremely entertaining. You've got a remarkable musical vision Daug - and Andy blows me away here.

Way cool....
You two do the coolest stuff together! I love this.

Daug, I know what you mean about the fidelity. You use alot of really long wave bass in your compositions and it doesn't compress very well. The best way to distribute most of your music would be with some loss-less compression like FLAC. We need to up the file size limits here to make it possible for uncompressed or FLAC distribution.

Andy, amazing.. Your tone is outstanding. Beautiful lines.

This one gets the TS stamp of high praise!

absolutely love the panning used on the percussion. that snare that bounces back and forth is incredible. great horn work. wow. nice use of the marimba. andy is my hero. daug, your production and mixing on this...man.....just killer stuff. layer after layer of sound. it doesn't get more captivating than this. i was absolutely not expecting the synths, but they fit right in. how do you do that??

Wowzer!
Holy crap Daug! This really pushes the envelop. Excellent Progressive Jazz-Rock. Andy's whacked sax playing adds an almost etheric inner-city dimension.

Way to go guys!

Be well!

[ but something's wrong with the playback (is it just my browser?) there seems to be a lot of distortion, like maybe the bass is overdriven? ]

Wowow Bill Get The Liner Notes Down
That distortion is part of the composition. See the description above, there is a 40% deviation in the speed of the wave playback during the first 21 bars. This is meant to approximate the overwhelming tide of emotion one experiences when they fall in love at first sight.
Notice the distortion "cleans up" and the "spinning" begins? I thought it was clever anyway...
Sorry, I try to explain when folks ask. I hope that makes it plain for you Bill. I use tons of long wave bass all the time and it doesn't compress well, a huge issue and why I won't make anymore stuff to share at this fidelity...

right then...
as i was trying to unsuccessfully tell you the other nite...the beginning just does not work for me... but obviously it does for lots of other folks...however...that being said it is really an overall small nit as the work takes off quiet well and is indeed a very huge undertaking. Andy's work still remains the "glue" that makes this work for me. Still a pity folks cannot hear your work at optimal fidelity ..I have ..and it is amazingly good. well done you two.

Right then
Jack, thanks for coming by and approving Andy's work on "Daphne". Andy's tight focused tone and clean articulation set him apart from the majority of sax players, I suspect this comes from a conscious decision about how he articulates. He's not going to like that praise, but too bad, producing material with Andy is a lot of fun, he's a great sport as well...
We are trying to do a new tune in Cubebass to overcome the compression problems. Harold made some demos of "Daphne" that sound promising...
