Description
Dedicated to Mrs. Andy Wigzell
Andy Wigzell plays saxophone on this recording.
Part one: "Daphne" theme has a 5/4 pulse but is polytonal and polyrhythmic. The first half of the theme moves ever faster. There is a 40% deviation in the tempo over the first 21 bars. As the theme "slows down" an approximation of motion sickness is rendered. The chord structure adds to the idea of "twisting" and release of tension at the same time.
.
Part two: There is a brief fantasy with horns, piano, vibes and mixed percussion. This section features a trombone grouping carrying the melody, the chord situation from the theme is revisited in a clever manner. Andy's horn is perfect in this section! Bravo!
The last two movements feature Andy's improv. At various points the harmony includes minor chords, without fifths, a whole tone apart washing against each other yet Andy works all manner of nuance and feeling into three simultaneous lines, he continues this madness against some debauched orchestration during the outro...
I would like to thank you all for listening to my pieces at MJ. I will not post anymore ensemble jazz recordings at this fidelity.
Andy's work on Daphne deserved to be heard. Andy is a treasure in our community.
This piece attempts to capture the first moments in time when one falls in love. Daphne, in classical greek myth was a turned into a tree to save her from the lusty greek god Apollo. Daphne is also the highly medicated femme acompli in the Scoobbie Doo cartoons. My favorite Daphne is the flowing variety.
I hope you enjoy...
