Description
Well I am just working on this and was looking for some input. I'd recorded this a while ago in a live solo arrangement, but I wanted to refine it somewhat, and that meant going back to the drawing board and re-recording it. This is actually a Fritters song and will be the title song on our next album, with Kelli adding harmonies to the song. I wrote the music and Kelli wrote the lyrics and melody.
Originally this was just guitar and voice, and that's how I started this out, but at some point I decided to add a drum part and then the bass seemed to be appropriate, and just for good measure I decided to add some synth atmosphere. I wonder if all this extra stuff is appropriate. For a little extra I left on a little bit of a guitar improvisation that I made up on the end of the song.
Today's my birthday so I figured I'd post this demo rough mix and get some input. Should I scale it back? If not just imagine it with Kelli's harmonies and you'll get an idea of the final version...

Lyrics
I can hear it in the country
I can hear it in the trees
I can hear it in the subway
sounds like love

I can hear it in the ocean
I can hear it in wind
I can hear it in the desert
sounds like love

Go on make it loud
Go on make it heard
Keep on making
Sounds Like Love

Sounds Like Love
Sounds Like Love....

I can hear it on the playgrounds
I can hear it in the streets
I can hear it in the fields it
sounds like love

I can hear it in the mountains
I can hear it in the homes
I can hear it in valleys it
Sounds like love

Go on make it loud
Go on make it heard
Insist on making
Sounds Like Love

Sounds like love
Sounds like love...

You've got to make them listen to
Sounds like love

Sounds like a winner
sounds like a good idea
sounds like please and thank you,
and sounds like hello friend
Sounds from without
sounds from within
sounds like the answer
sounds like love.

Happy birthday, Jim!
It's my dad's birthday, too....

This is a really nice song, and I like that in this incarnation, the fact that it's a really nice song comes through... You've got some of your signature Jim Bouchard sounds sort of ghosting in the background, and they're enough to provide ear interest over headphones, but they're not so much that one is drawn to pay attention to the recording technique over the song itself...

I think your vocal is really good, and there's a nice feel between the acoustic guitar and the bass to my ears... I like the drums, which sound airy and seem very human and variable...

And another thing....
I get tired, sometimes, of listening to tune after MacJams tune with all these cool production bits, but there isn't a really solid song at the heart of it...

This is a solid song... You could sing it, just you and the guitar, and it would deliver...

And...
...though I like the song very much, I have no idea why I ended up with three fan picks down there...

Thanks!
Sometimes the site is a little glitchy with all the updates that are going on in the background these days but I appreciate the sentiment a lot! I do think the mix could be improved but I really like my new Joe Meek OneQ that I picked up as an early birthday present for myself, helped out by trading in a lot of stuff I wasn't using. The guitar is pretty much just using the OneQ for compression and equalizer and I also used a bit of the Deeeser on this to control some harmonics.

Nice
Nice simple plinker. Sounds good simple like this. Too much music has a soundbed a mile deep nowadays. When there is a nice melody, it is nice to have subtle compliments to the melody without overpowering it. Enjoyed it.

Thanks!
The new Fritters CD will be full of songs that are pretty simple. A lot of them are stripped back. There will be some that are more kitchen sink style but I think we are focusing more on developing songs that are able to be played live.

Thank you!
I try to be respectful as much as possible to everyone. And I don't know if I'm really one of the most talented guys around MJ, but I guess if I can balance it out by being respectful, so much the better. Thanks!

my mix hat
actually I think it sounds just right. Scaled back in its own right. I can imagine Kelli's voice just topping this beautifully. The timing with the drums and guitar sounds a little loose at times, (that may have been intentional). There's also just a slight little metallic ring overtone in the ambient synth, (or thats just ringing in my ears :-) that seemed out of place at first but then grew on me. So I'm not sure what conclusion to make there. A good prospect for the Titletrack. Bets of luck

thanks!
The drums were a total afterthought, and the guitar was only recorded to a shaker track to keep time. I could go in to the drums to tighten them up a bit, but the guitar got a little off in the second verse in this take. I have another take or two of the guitar but the sound doesn't match up right and it would take a bit to tweak it into time so I hadn't done that yet. I am also working on that metallic ring because I wasn't quite sure about that either. It's a Sculpture synth sound that can be tweaked a lot but it's just finding the right sound.

Really nice song
Great hook.

Nicely restrained drum and the snare sound is just right. Guitar is really good as well.

If I did anything with it at all I'd try to add a little bit of extra texture at various points. Maybe another acoustic?

The outro works really well.

Cheers

Another
excellent production Jim.
I love how you have things sounding real and round, without the jagged bits we sometimes get.
Very natural and very pro sounding.
Oh ...... and the song's great too.

Great Jim!
I'm listening on my iphone ear buds, and your vocals sound too far back for me. You have such a beautiful, draw-me-in voice, but it's hidden on this song.

Otherwise, the composition seems perfect to me; I wouldn't scale it back.
