Clumsy Kisses (Alt)

Description
I was attempting to record a folky version of a song I had previously uploaded here. Things started fine enough with acoustic guitar, banjo, and simple percussion, but then more and more layers were piled on and here's the result. I am really happy with this version but I'm not so sure it's folk anymore.

I took some inspiration from Mark Knopfler for the end solo, here.

Banjo, percussion, and additional guitar were performed by Paul Smith. Thanks, Paul!

The original version can be heard here:

Lyrics
She got all she wanted,
He got almost all he needed,
You were staying home tonight.

Tattoos, birthmarks and cheap perfume,
It's something he keeps from you,
Still, it's not something he feels guilty about.

He's gone the long way home,
Hoping you won't wait up any longer,
The streets are icy cold tonight.

Tattoos, birthmarks and cheap perfume,
It's something he keeps from you,
Still, it's not something he feels guilty about,
Because it's something he feels you've justified,
But you don't ask so won't hear any lies.

He wakes you opening the front door,
But still you pretend that you're fast asleep,
You hear his humming through the walls,
The bedroom fills with hallway light,
And now his clumsy kisses goodnight,
His fingers sliding down your neck.

Now he's had all he wanted,
And you've got almost all you need,
Except a man who stays home at night.

Excellent
production and performance....... love the way you merge these layers and bring it to the 'here and now'. Beautiful vocals with an excellent vocal range..... and your harmonies are just great. The variation in sounds just is enthralling and keeps me listening. It's just full of pleasant surprises.... love the solo guitar just before the beautifully harmonised 'Beach Boys' style choral finnish, love it, regards M

Don't be shy. This does sound professional. I'd love to look at your Arrange Window and marvel at all the multitude of competing tracks you have somehow corralled into a magnificent melange of melody. Really lush. I mean I know I'm always saying that about your stuff, but this one is out of control. Good job!

Thank you Michael
It took quite a few swings but I finally hit on a take I really loved for that solo. I mentioned Mark Knopfler because I borrowed his fingerpicking appraoch to lead guitar. Now to get better at aping his swells by rolling the volume knob with my pinky finger! It's so hard!

banjo
yeah, I'm so glad I bought that banjo (I should call it a banjo guitar because it's got 6 strings and is tuned just like a guitar - cheating?). The sound of the instrument is so unique and brings a warmth and honesty in character to anything. just love it!

Wow, really impressive.
layered harmonies are superlative, ditto for the banjo.

Man, I loved it
It's like flying in that fabric of layers. The banjo makes it so different to any other ballad.
Think about this imaginary band you used here and make more songs for them!

I'm glad you mentioned the intro, I agonized over keeping that distorted vocal line there but in the end I think it really worked. Thanks for listening.
