Symphonic Smackdown

Description
Last spring I posted “Classical Smackdown”, which was a little piano ditty (gone berserk) meant to illustrate the endless tension in me between my classical piano training influences and my love of “rocking out”. When I first conceived it, I fully expected that i would get the piano track down and then orchestrate to that. But as it got more and more wild, see-sawing back and forth between genres, the orchestration concept started to feel a bit intimidating. Fortunately I thought it was pretty fun as solo piano, and opted to post it that way with the idea that maybe sometime later .....

Well the 2009 motorcycle touring season just ended in the last couple of weeks and I’ve been ready to come out of music hibernation and embrace a new project. While I did get something started, it was just not engaging me enough, at least for now. Meanwhile I noticed that I was listening anew to “Classical Smackdown” with the thought of giving the orchestration a try, and finally sat down to play around with it. It wasn’t long before I was hooked, although filled with trepidation (“controlled terror”?) as I neared the first boogie section. I knew I would need to come up with a “big band” sound to accompany the piano there, but hadn’t yet tried anything remotely like that, so was entering completely uncharted territory. My apologies to the great horn players of MJ who I know could do a mighty job on this piece – and maybe we’ll give that a go sometime if there’s interest. But for this pass, I really wanted to try my hand at working out all the instruments and seeing how (or if) I could make them play nicely together.

This is a crazy, wild ride and I guess tells the story even better than the original, about the various influences and energies that inform my often raucous piano playing. I did make one change to the first piano recording. The 8 measure between the two “boogies” were originally a repeat of the main theme, but I decided to play in a different little tune there to break it up a bit more. Otherwise, the piano is the same as in “Classical Smackdown” which, if you’re interested, is here:

Classical Smackdown

Doing this orchestration has been a total BLAST for me! It was alternately harder and easier than I’d expected, and I have to say that the process of adding in the percussion was some of the most fun I’ve had with digital music since discovering GB on my Mac! Hope you too will have a little fun with this Smackdown redux!

Special thanks to Shay (kassia) for the multitude of listens and suggestions along the way, and to Dave (bug67) for the squirrel!

Karen, this is frenetic and glorious. You have to be a very well put together person to compose this. I see people skipping hand in hand through rainbows, lady. And then, they boogie on down into the lush green hills. Thanks.

Please call KSA SWAT team...
Oh, never mind, this is not out of control... just bits of silliness and wild abandon, that is OK. :-) This should cause smirks of mirth around the earth. Very well done, Karen... this is very well orchestrated from the original (that is HARD to do!) without throwing in the ENTIRE Kitchen Sink (I didn't hear kalimba or penny-whistle, which causes immediate KSA-reaction.) There are a LOT of things going on, and you balanced each instrument quite well... brass is especially tough and sounded good here. Very fun complex romp!

Drakonis

Karen this is great! Not only is your orchestration fabulous, but you seamlessly weave in and out of the boogie woogie so well one doesn't even notice the transitions. The pace is fast, furious and full of energy. If I had a complaint it would be that the end comes up at you so very quickly - it's over 'fore you know it! I also like the quick little pulling in of the reigns right before the frantic ending - very sweet. This is no doubt one of your best, and though it is probably not quite the ride listening as creating, it's still a pretty fun ride! Thanks for the share - Sig

Goosebumps!
Karen, you've outdone yourself. I'm speechless. I heard this once today but, that was on an old cruddy work PC with the one, built in speaker. All that did was primer me for the joy I was to receive when I got home to a real sound system.

I loved the first version of this. Sometimes we tend to over do stuff when we make additions. Not the case here. Everything fits perfectly in it's place and only enhances an already spectacular piece. Bravo!

I like the orchestration.
It's both rich and tasteful. Your instruments are crisp , cleanly separated and articulated.
This is such a wonderful and uplifting foot-stumping number that I don' think anything could diminish it and what you've done with this orchestration is take it up one big notch.
Great work Karen.
Cheers,
Charlie

Hi Ingo!
it's hard to argue with your assessment of the synth horns. i tweaked them as best as i could - i'm sure a more knowledgeable person would know a lot more tricks than i do. and of course, as my MJ friends keep reminding me, i SHOULD get better orchestral instrument software (these are Jam Packs). all that being said, thanks for the listen and comment, and for being able to enjoy the music in spite of the sound (???) :)

Why are reeds so hard to sample well?
Horns, too. Maybe a mystic among us has the answer.... ;-)

I loved the original, but the beauty of this version is (for me) that it points out how fluid the potential emotional charge of any musical phrase can be; orchestration rules everything! This thing sure is fun, and mighty smart, too. Deepest bows.

i know - reeds, horns - i realize there are better sounds in other software, and one of these fine days, maybe i'll spring for it. the problem is, i'd probably need to spring for a new 'puter to handle it all ... blah blah ... this is what stops me .... one thing leads to another. thanks for the listen!

It's ..
.. definitely the genre medoly hopping that grabs me: classical to "wild west" to boogie .. but that's done in such an excellent, intentionally stricking way, it tells the story of your influence struggle very well PLUS it all rolicks along at an intense panic .. grand orchestration Karen and apologies for the delay in listening... but u know me .. Three minutes and twenty-two seconds of sheer, 1000-proof musical genius. There are pretenders such as myself who kick around the edges of music a bit, and then there are those such as yourself who quietly and without ego just wring the walnuts out of the trees and get the whole population rocking with joy and exuberance.

Stunning. And riotous. "Call me a fan" doesn't come close.

I did not
hear the original before checking this but speaking of bike touring - this is a tour de force of compositional acuity! Enjoyed the journey - love the western elements to it 3/4 through.

Wondrous and happy!
The orchestration really makes it come alive! Karen this is really some amazing stuff. You are such a talented gal and could do just about anything with your music. BTW what package did you use for the orchestral instruments?
Thanks,
Stephen

great...
reminds me of a score from any 90's film..... not sure i could fathom playing this at full speed or all the way through but everything is mixed so nice that nothing matters....it's just a good listen ....

Interesting mix of styles. You play on the other side of (the musical world) this is bright and cheery, laden with sugar and honey. Well played and produced. I am curious as to how garage band works in comparison to programs like Cakewalk's Sonar. Great piece!

Copeland with a shot of Emerson
Are those your fingers doing al that piano playing? Dang, sister!

Love the Western threads as they build into your boogie section, makes me want to play some Copeland back to back with Keith Emerson's old "Hoedown" cover. Pure happy-fun-joy composition and playing, K.

Wonderful
Just like your other smackdown, this is wonderfully creative. You clearly master both ends of the spectrum, serious and not-so-serious, and the transitions between one and the other are so smooth that if you dont' pay attention you wonder "wait, how did we get here?".

Really good.
