Description
I've been wanting to write a song about waylon jennings pretty much ever since he died, but i didn't want to write a tribute kind of thing, more of a "how waylon related to my life" song, and the lyrics just never came to me. Until a week ago when i was tilling the garden, thinking about a trip home i was about to take and how i was going to have to go see my grandad in the VA, he was a huge influence in my life, just a big strapping son of a bitch and i hate visiting him now, he thinks he's 8 and he doesn't know who anybody is. if i had more guts i'd shoot him. but anyway i realized that waylon was the same kind of giant guy, the same presence in my life, and that i actually feel to this day that i knew him, which is i guess the highest praise you can give a singer/songwriter.

Lyrics
first time i heard you sing
i was sitting on my grandad's knee
you were tired of feeling ornery and mean
but you weren't apologizing
he said that there ain't country
not like web pierce and the grand opery
but i was thinking it hit pretty close to me
and i wasn't apologizing
no i ain't apologizing
hey waylon life surely kicked your ass
ended up stove up waiting for your turn to pass
your guitar was tuned
and your women were firm and willing
but there ain't a dream
that time won't get to killing
grandad's living in the VA
he don't know where he is
i don't know what to say
waylon died in 2002
web pierce well he's dead too
all the old boys that taught you how to live
someday will teach you to die
that's just the way it is
yeah all the old boys that taught you to live
will teach you to die that's just the way it is
they'll teach you to die that's just the way it is
i was sitting on my grandad's knee
you were tired of feeling ornery and mean
but you weren't apologizing
he said that there ain't country
not like web pierce and the grand opery
